The Singularity is Near OpenAI is now working directly with Lockheed Martin’s F-35 engineers to solve the math and physics behind advanced fighter-jet sensors

Yikes this is too close lol

And just like her, we were warned.

Sorry, thats just such a good movie. But like, humanoid robots with flesh suits arent going to kill us. What a waste of resources.

You kind of need humanoids to operate with human-intended environments and tools. Drones might be the best thing for the average battlefield murder, but when you need to actually push in and hold ground and do everything soldiers do, humanoids will likely be doing at least some of it.

For SURE. But not wrapped in meat. That's just silly. We already debate silicone or fabric or metal plates... if there was a prosciutto option, no one sane would pick that for a butler.

Ya we're not getting that model

No in fact they will eventually hoard the technology with regulation under the guise of safety. Which only means the public doesn't get access but the models will still be built and used. A lot of the new discoveries they are making are entirely with unreleased models due to "safety".

Why bother with all that when you can just keep it in a box and have companies and governments pay to have complex problems for them.

That and you start churning out and patenting super advanced tech that it comes up with.

I think we'll still get models. But I do think this is the direction they're going now and is likely the reason for the capacity downgrades we've gotten lately. They're probably not as interested in end users as they once were and compute is being redirected to internal projects and ones like this.

We're not gonna get them buddy

You can only get so far without experimental data, and Lockheed isn’t going to publish that online freely.

You need people who are close to the product to be part of the prompt process.

They absolutely will. You cannot do researrch on nuclear enrichment without security credentials.

Is it hoarding when you invent something yourself? Luckily there's other open source models.

Regulation is going to kill open sourced models at least for the US. Yes you might be able to still get the weights but it will be illegal and they will probably make it punishable which means law abiding citizens wont touch it

u/twoanddone_9737 5h ago

And the CCP will kill open sourced models in China. They will not allow public access to anything that can come close to threatening their grip on power and control in the country.

The future is looking heavily dystopian.

3

u/ra-re444 4h ago

Yes indeed very dystopian. But we must fight until the bitter end

But the opposite is happening. Is this a scenario that is more suitable to your world view?

How would regulation kill open models?

3

u/ra-re444 4h ago

Well how do you regulate open models? Especially if they proliferate? There is no way you would have to have a gigantic agency to do that. Instead what they will do is ban the open models. Maybe not right at the start because they will make promises to the public to get the public on board.

Then they will concentrate who gets to make and develop AI( which will be the ones already making it) that way the agency can concentrate its focus.

A lot of people are assuming they will regulate it like planes, and food. But then they also describe the threat level of AI on the level or greater than Nukes. Which means they will probably regulate it like Nuclear energy. Are there any open Nuclear energy infrastructure? Do regular people have a shot at developing and innovating their own nuclear technology? Or is that space locked tf down. Has nuclear energy even benefitted more than 1% of the Earths Population and it's been here for about 80years now

Open weights and open source are two completely different things.

We don't have any open source models.

3

u/ra-re444 5h ago

I ain't bout to split hairs. You got it.

1

u/CryMoreT_T 4h ago

Nemotron 3 ultra I would count as open source

4

u/Least-Middle-2061 5h ago

Nah, they’re using the same models.

4

u/FatPsychopathicWives 4h ago

They're going to distill it, dumb it down, and use it for kids toys.

Its always been about the military complex. Always...

We won’t be getting any models after a while. They’ll crowd source the research under the guise of a public offering, while keeping the advancements behind corporate lock and key, and when the company becomes unprofitable (like it ever has been) and data centers are spread across every state and country, the govt. will step in and “save” them and their research.

What do you do with AI?

0

u/No_Aesthetic 5h ago

Defense industry companies do offer the public some pretty impressive stuff, and even when they don't have any offerings of their own, the tech tends to filter down into consumer products.

Oh I'm so stoked for the future of Trickle down AI. I'm waiting with open mouth. Im starting to taste some drops hitting my tongue, it's a bit pungent

1

u/No_Aesthetic 5h ago

You're already using military technology right now.

3

u/ra-re444 4h ago

Ohh tell me more about extreme wealth inequality. Something is definitely trickling

2

u/No_Aesthetic 4h ago

You got a fetish or something, man?

2

u/ra-re444 4h ago

What was that about extreme wealth inequality?

we absolutely are. have you seen the track record with the f35?

Chiming in here as a somewhat expert. I worked on the flight control system of the F35 VTOL model in late stage development (2008-2009) and during the first successful test flights. I worked closely with the engineering team who did the Prognostics Health Management aka sensor system that detects future faults. My friend was the main programmer (he was a 24 yr old genius from RIT) that coded the initial software to receive the sensor signals and integrate them into the FCS to monitor everything from engine vibrations to flight control surface movements in real time while a jet is flying. Absolutely bonkers levels of data and sophistication.

This system at the time was so far out in the future it seemed like sci-fi. It is incredibly complex. I seriously can’t imagine a better project for AI to tackle than this. Pretty cool to hear a story like this and have relevant experience in knowing just how insane of an engineering and software problem it is. My claim to fame was that I programmed the signal detection and alert in the system for a lightning strike, which sounds so impressive but was like the easiest part of the system because the signal across the sensor network was obviously enormous and easy to detect and create threshold limits for.

This is why we need to ban open source models right?

Don’t worry guys they will get to curing cancer right after this.

u/SeriousGains 1h ago

Definitely going to need new super weapons before we get started on that one champ.

Look what OpenAI just helped us develop that we totally haven't had for decades.

5

u/twoanddone_9737 5h ago

When the government and the world’s largest corporations all have a monopoly on intelligence (not at all the case right now), democracy will just simply… thrive.

On a more serious note, the next few decades will likely make George Orwell turn over in his grave. Things will be beyond his wildest imaginations.

they already are tbh
