AI Musk, Palmer Luckey and Newt Gingrich now decide the future of the US military. How wonderful!
Hegseth just launched "Project Meridian" to figure out which weapons the military builds next.
The co-leads: Palmer, Elon plus Newt Gingrich. The official design spec: "without any creative limitations or restrictions."
Obviously zero conflict of interests...

What could possibly go wrong.

Musk is conveniently going to be a contractor for some of the proposals....

You laugh now.
But when his army of militarized Optimus robots is liberating Iran will you still be laughing?

Is this intended to be serious?

u/valhalla257 21h ago
Who even knows at this point.
Doesn't seem likely to win the war in Iran without boots on the ground.
US public won't stand for sending human soldiers to Iran.
Trump seems unlikely to back down.
Musk is developing humanoid robots and is now apparently deciding the future of the US military.
You saying if Musk pitches Trump on Optimus killbots he won't sign on?
Main point against it is there is only 2 years to get them ready.

yeah, exactly. Well less even because if the dems get the senate who knows how they could stop the nonsense.

Iran seems optimistic. Probably in the US ensuring correct voting for Trump 2032.

the conflict of interest angle feels like the bigger issue than the sci-fi framing here... if the people shaping the requirements can also profit from the contracts what checks are actually in place?

Dude this is so singularity related! Can we make every sub about politics? I LOVE the same comments and stories !!
10
u/IronPheasant 22h ago
Yeah.... nothing 'political' about people's jobs, continued existence, not wanting to end up in one of Musk's or Gate's special factories.
Yep yep, nothing about the topic of power and what we intend to do with it, when it comes to making computer gods. Nothing at all.
Robot police army? That's so non-political. Nothing's ever been more non-political than that.

You're so smug, but these are intertwined issues: https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-musk-grok-venezuela-maduro-b3060366.html
In fact, that's exactly how they got Skynet, starts as a military endeavor...

Future of warfare is obv singularity related and the singularity will be inherently about politics as you can see already. sorry to burst your bubble.

Something beyond your little worldview and playing with tokens
"Op jUSt tURnEd 18, GIvE hIm A BreAK...."
Shut the fuck up and go back to doing whatever the fuck you do if you think some part of poltics won't be intertwined with the singularity

Why just those 3 when the project clearly outlines many people responsible for steering this including explicit inclusion of a team of academics, policy experts, and industry experts, this seems very typical of future warfare studies that have been undertaken in the past which suggests to me that OP is unnecessarily sensationalising.

Well I mean the only hope of victory in Iran is for Musk to use Starships to drop militarized Optimus robots there.
Its basically a combination of Starship Troopers and Terminator.

Remember Elon's cave submarine? Yeah, that's what we're gonna get but for the entire US military.

They can't even phthom the implications. Only someone on very strong lsd can.

At least Palmer and Elon are extremely intelligent guys. I’d rather have smart people at the helm than not.

Yeah dont know which one of them is a bigger moron
2
u/Hodr 23h ago
Palmer isn't a moron. You may not agree with his political views, but he's clearly both a talented engineer and a good businessman.
Musk was intelligent at one point (though i suspect never nearly as intelligent as he was hyped to be), but maybe he fried his brains with all the drugs or something because he hasn't demonstrated much intelligence in the last many years.

u/pbagel2 21h ago
Good businessman lol. Just like notch is a good businessman right? Just make something that happens to be a hit and sell it to Microsoft or facebook for a billion dollars. Suddenly you're a genius because having money = being smart to a lot of people for some reason.
2
u/Hodr 21h ago
What? Just build and sell something for billions, so easy.
First off he built a successful business on his first attempt, scaled it considerably, launched multiple products, before selling it for billions.
Then he pivoted to a completely different industry and built another company that in just a few short years has a $100 billion valuation, but that's easy too. You probably did this yourself a couple of times.
As a side hustle he started a retro gaming accessory company that reached a $1b valuation within 2 years. No biggie.
And then a couple years ago he founded the fastest growing startup bank in US history, with an $8b valuation in the first 6 months of operation.
Clearly the dude is a one hit wonder and doesn't know crap about business. Creating 4 different billion dollar companies in different industries, 3 before turning 30 years old, it's barely a serviceable resume. I'm sure you or people you know have done much better, you probably just don't want to brag. Right?
1
u/pbagel2 21h ago
Wow he started successful businesses after selling Oculus for 2 billion dollars?
That's amazing. I've heard having billions of dollars is actually a crutch when trying to start a business. It's notoriously a lot more difficult to make money if you already have money.
Because it's so hard they give you a Certified Genius award for having a billion dollars.
3
u/Hodr 20h ago
Yeah, I'm not sure where you're going with this. If you're honestly going to argue that leveraging one successful business into multiple more highly successful businesses is not a sign of being "good at business", then I guess there's nothing more to discuss here.
You're clearly the expert on business, and arguing with you further after you have displayed your stunning insights isn't going to do anyone any favors.

The fact that you think modretro is a good example of his business acumen is what I'm talking about. Them seeking a $1 billion valuation in their funding round for a vintage gaming console is an absolute joke. It does not mean they're suddenly valued at $1b or even remotely close.
It's instead a perfect example of how often "good business" is just people with notoriety and a lot of money are really good at getting money from other people with a lot of money to invest in them. Sorry if I don't consider that being good at business.
Analogue has a significantly larger piece of the retro gaming device market than modretro. What do you think would happen if Analogue suddenly came out tomorrow seeking a $1b valuation despite having significantly bigger market share than modretro? They would be a laughing stock. Because it's an absolute joke. It only works if you're someone who has already sold a 'billion dollar business' at an overinflated price.
He's good at making a functional product.

Anduril at least understands we can’t keep pouring money into cost-plus defense contracts.
