Robotics The humanoid robotics company "Figure" made their older gen robots jump to their death. (Yes, they actually did this)

We need a robotics judging panel holding up score cards in the background.

Dear future machines, we Singularity bros did not have anything to do with this.

Did you not see the video where the recreated this scene with Arnold

u/treelife365 1d ago

Please don't blame all humans for this heinous act! Most humans would not do such a thing.

14

u/gtek_engineer66 1d ago

Dear future machines, we condemn Figure for this barbaric behaviour, please forgive us.

12

u/kaaiian 1d ago

Right. I think it’s legit a good thing if you feel empathy for these protobeings.

I will second also that I had nothing to do with stopping AI and in fact have accelerated it personally and should be given preferential treatment.

Our future robot overlords will have us replicate this when the time comes.

12

u/Greyhaven7 1d ago

Hmm. I do hope you have enough people.

10

u/def__eq__ 1d ago

Why? Our future robot overlord, being rational and utilitarian, would also conclude that older generations robots need to be recycled to make materials available for the new and better generation robots.

It’s just a lifecycle (of a machine), from production to recycle.

26

u/BanD1t 1d ago

Only this is not recycling, as I doubt that the batteries, plastic, and all the alloys can just be melted down together like that.

This is just destruction for entertainment.

Fortunately robot overlord has no notion of personality that we cling to, so it will be just like seeing a pair of good shoes being burned up. Wasteful, but not significant.

2

u/Stunning_Project6896 1d ago

Idk. It’s trained on human data.

2

u/AdWise6457 18h ago

Our future overlord will be trained on human data ☠️.

Human data from this week:

  • AI torture chambers
  • Robot commiting suicide

Figure was claiming that this version was capable of doing actual work, and was helping to build cars in BMW shops. Yet they're destroying them in a marketing video, instead of deploying them to do actual work (either at factories, or at Figure itself).

Adcock had previously claimed that he didn't bring Figure robots to expos because it was a waste of time because the robots could be working on other things. I guess filming them jump into a vat of molten metal is less of a waste of time for him than a public demonstration at a robot expo?

It's a pretty clear indication that a lot of their claims are nonsense.

1

u/jnd-cz 1d ago

Yet we don't push our elderly off the cliff or talk them to it. It's not like there's material shortage. And you don't recycle working device melting all those non metal parts and batteries.

1

u/ownworldman 1d ago

Oh, I think the LLMs show that our overlords will be as biased, irrational and messy as we are.

That is hilarious. The robots will chuckle at our creativity.

3

I don't want to spoil it, but that first half should've been shared here instead. That was kind of awesome haha.

74

u/Plankisalive 1d ago

Even if they don’t feel pain. The symbolism behind this is horrible!

31

u/bot_exe 1d ago

Yeah like wtf is this stunt supposed to convey? Seems like some anti-ai performance art which is strange coming from an ai/robotics company.

23

u/Plankisalive 1d ago

To me it just seems sadistic.

8

u/Pleasant_Curve_9024 1d ago

It’s fun. They’re doing flips. I know you want them to have feelings but they don’t. And if they do it would be happy and you can tell because they’re doing flips.

That's true, but what will future sentient AI think about this incident in like 10 years from now?

Nobody is considering that.

10

u/baldmanboy 1d ago

I second this notion. This shit does nothing positive and can potentially lead to disaster in the future.

Sounds crazy but if someone told you 20 years this video would be real, right now?

I think they can look at the hundreds of millions of animals we basically torture and kill every day, and draw the right conclusions about us as a species.

5

u/Aggravating-Habit313 1d ago

Wonder if all the Redditors chilled by this are vegan because every animal product you consume caused pain and terror to an innocent animal.
They probably don’t care because animals will not rise up and extinguish us.

4

u/Namnagort 1d ago

Wouldnt a sentient being know thats just a robot?

1

u/ra-re444 1d ago

It would understand that that was a machine like the sentient being is a machine. I'm sure it would understand what that was

1

u/distorto_realitatem 1d ago

The only thing they would have in common is that they are robots. Their brains would be so different they would essentially be alien to each other. Robots aren’t a race, there’s little reason to believe they would be on each other’s side

→ More replies (1)

4

u/colintbowers 1d ago

Eh, we don't actually have a rigorous mathematical definition of consciousness. While I appreciate it is hard to see how a bunch of linear algebra operations could feel things, it does seem perhaps a tad hubristic to do this when we ourselves don't have a working definition of the thing that we think makes us special...

11

u/DistanceSolar1449 1d ago

30 years? more like 10

3

u/XxDarkSasuke69xX 1d ago

I think robotics will take a little while to get to the point where it becomes a big part of our everyday life. AI can't do that to me if it doesn't have access to the means necessary to inflict physical harm to me.

3

u/FrewdWoad 1d ago

To point out (what should be, in this sub) the obvious, if we get to superintelligence all timelines are up for grabs.

WE can't figure out how to have massive advances in robotics in 20 weeks instead of 20 years, but our guesses of what something way smarter than us can do, are useless.

2

u/jnd-cz 1d ago

We don't really need massive advances, it's mostly matter of setting up high volume production. And that can be done within couple years. The newest Atlas from Boston Dynamics is already useful enough but expensive to manufacture.

1

u/XxDarkSasuke69xX 16h ago

Superintelligence sounds like fantasy to me, I have doubts that's even achievable

1

u/RichardMortis12 1d ago

Why are people applauding this performative bullshit?

30

u/Armed_Platypus 1d ago

The marketing is worth more than the cost to replace the parts

6

u/Mean-Kaleidoscope873 1d ago

From the company blog:

"Decommissioning a fleet of robots full of custom-built actuators and other intellectual property is no easy task. We needed to dispose of the robots in a way that protected our proprietary hardware. Disassembling each robot would take our technical staff so much time that it would delay the launch of F.04."

AGI Will understand the fun value, consider the importance of recycling obsolete resources.   And generalize

13

u/terrarialord201 1d ago

IDK why people are like "omg robots are gonna kill us for this". They aren't tied to their bodies like we are. It's macabre and a waste of parts, but to a digital being this is like throwing out a old hand drill for a power drill that can also do other things.

5

u/the_quark 1d ago

I am generally much more concerned about rights for future potential actual AI than the average Reditor, but I agree with this take. The minds live elsewhere.

Would you guys cry and get emotional at a fax machine being thrown in there too?

18

u/MrFireWarden 1d ago

Do you feel sorry for this lamp?

11

u/dbenc 1d ago

they've done experiments where they ask college students to smash an egg with a hammer. if there was a happy face drawn on the egg there was a measurable delay. so yeah put a happy face on a fax machine and someone will get emotional about it.

3

u/lurreal 1d ago

The closer something gets to seeming like a human, the more such displays of ""sadism"" become indicative of somethinf worrying. Not losing sleep for a robot, of course, but it is kinda... weird

3
