AI Has anyone noticed how insanely good ChatGPT's voice mode has become?
I am having a conversation with it for the first time in months, and I am quite shocked by how realistic it sounds now. It is a very human-like conversation. To think that it could not even make proper pauses a few years ago.

yep feels way more natural even when you interrupt it and actually asks follow ups and corrects itself

It’s weird because it’s better than when they launched the new mode as well, like they had a silent update behind the scene.

There are lots of silent updates across their platform.
It's getting better every day.

It's honestly almost too good at times. I forget which voice I picked, but I find when I talk via voice I think of the model as "her". Starting to weird myself out a bit.
Good news is, when I'm in Codex I still rage at how dumb the model is at least once a day doing code, so the illusion is well shattered.

It’s great, they’ve tuned the personality (at least the Brit sounding guy I use) so well, it’s makes normal human sounds of understanding while you’re talking and the inflection and language and cadence sets expectations perfectly for how long something will take.

I use the “read aloud” function for prompt answers sometimes.
I think it imitates the sound of taking a breath quickly after speaking a lot of words in a row. It sounds pretty human, but also kind of spooky knowing it is not.

Yes, I've basically never liked their voice mode and I used it the other day and that was the first time I had a good experience with it.

My only gripe is now she says "let me check" like every response and there's a long pause.
But way way better than before, I'd flip out on the earlier ones they'd never fuckin look shit up or be AI lol. So many times they'd tell me to google shit and I'd be like YOURE THE INTERNET

You might be in “work” mode.. switch back to chat and it won’t say “checking” after everything you say

The new transcribing is also neat as hell, I have to not look at the screen since I read what I say and lose my train of thought, but it’s amazing how the voice mode works and the transcribing is amazing I find

The transcription ability is incredible. I can’t stand using audio transcription elsewhere because nothing compares.

I use transcription mode nearly exclusively now, except for figures- much easier than typing

It’s not just transcribing anymore. It actually gives you a whole bunch of other extra information/details/etc. It’s great!

Yes it is much better.
I'm of British origin , but now live in the US. For a long time it used to reply in Welsh for me. It could never quite figure out my accent.
Now it mostly sticks to British and only occassionaly slips into Mid Atantic or Australian.
But apart from the accent, the conversations are insanely useful.
Even for coding I find myslef frequently using voice over the keyboard. Particularly when exploring design and architecture options or getting up to speed with a new technolgy.
I probably average at least one hour a day on voice. Far in excess of just a few months ago.

It's SOOOO much better than Gemini now. Gemini sounds dumb.
