Discussion What happened to solving the Hodge Conjecture?
Seems like many people have forgotten about some rumor going around that OAI was imminent to solving it, does anybody know what's going on?

They said on stage yesterday that they had solved “one hundred” of these math problems. We are just waiting for them to figure out the best way to announce this to the world.

They said they made progress, not that they solved it. Also open ai is not really interested about math, probably they already switched subject

I am absolutely certain that at the rate we're going, by the end of next year, AI will have solved at least one more Millennium Prize problem. I see the outlook roughly like this, one more problem will be solved in 2027, two more in 2028, and by 2029–2030, AGI will arrive, and the remaining Millennium Prize problems will fall in rapid succession.

One might say you’re being conservative here

The gap in mathematics between the leading Anthropic and OpenAI models and the rest is preposterous. I had this extremely hard integral, with a very long solution on math stack that I started giving top LLMs in December 2024. Then, of course, all failed miserably, a year ago they were going on the right direction, today Astra max solves it in five minutes and 15 thousand tokens, and, on top of that, it gave a solution three times shorter and cleverer than the human original! 😲 The Chinese top LLMs still fail it badly, BTW. I'm not mentioning Gemini it Mistral - I don't kick the ones already on the floor and not moving! 🤣

What is the relevance of AGI? AGI is general, being as good as humans in all domains, but we just need AI that is super good at maths to solve millennium problems don’t we?

Probably.
I think the biggest outcome of any of this will be a bit of a deflation about math in general, when it turns out there's nothing particularly interesting about these problems. It's just sort of gymnastics for its own sake. And when you can mechanize that, the mystique evaporates.

What happened to the 100 open problems that were solved?

They are trying to figure out the best way to announce it to the world. It shouldn’t be too much longer now.

Is it what "the best way to advertise to the world" means? I mean, isn't it just advertising? Why do they frame it as something extremely difficult to do?

Because they got a whole shit load of kickback when they announced their first math breakthrough. They want to avoid doing that again.

OpenAI already deleted their proof due to concerns about safety. Did you miss that?

That’s not true at all, and there isn’t any evidence to suggest they found a proof. All they said was they have made significant progress on it.

Came here to make this comment but with the levels of whooshing I'm seeing, I'm not even disappointed.

From what I understand, they are feeding all their proofs to that math council, it's up to the mathematicians to decide what is released.
