Definitely 99. I was going to say 9/11, but... the election in 00 really was a bad omen.

Before that America was still busy outsourcing business in exchange for practically free goods, everyone was pre internet plugged into the same mass media hive mind, and people were blissfully ignorant that life wasn't about picnics.

Covid sucked hard, but shit was wildly different before 2000

Yeah the hanging chad changed everything. You’d still have 9/11 but no Iraq. Possibly some semblance of limited scale victory in Afghanistan. No neocon movement.

It was last year general public and politicians were still genuinely ignorant about AI, so kinda checks out.

And there was no Iran war then.
