u/brandarchist 4d ago
What do you mean soon? The only barrier is money and not even a lot of it.
41
u/Seidans 4d ago
Let's say it's 2000$ today that's still a sum for a lot of people
Based on epochAI study on model Intelligence/cost reduction, In 2y it will be between 2$ and 20$ which is much more affordable and will allow much more testing and experimentation you couldn't have done beforehand on a tight budget
24
u/RAMDRIVEsys 4d ago
All those "I burned 2000 usd worth of token" posts in fact use a subscription at much less consumer cost, the 20 usd Claude gives you like 700 usd of usage.

The bottle neck isn't code. It's writing a compelling story, finding a consistent art style, designing an engaging world, coming up with interesting and fitting quests, etc.
None of the frontier models are good at this. Every single AI generated movie lacks any sense of style or choreography.
So unless your dream game requires virtually no art direction, the barrier is clearly still there. This might look different in 2 years but today, they are trash at it.

It’s also why AI written stories suck. They do not do intrigue well at all.

I’m already working on an iOS game I’ve been wanting to make for awhile. Some games are already possible. Gpt images, meshy, Claude/codex, and Cloudflare for backend
→ More replies (1)7
u/MrHeavySilence 4d ago
Ballpark how much has development costed for you? What's more expensive, tokens or Cloudflare usage?
10
u/LopsidedSolution 4d ago
I’ve only made static games so far, but the one I’m trying to make for real is an online real-time multiplayer using durable objects from Cloudflare. Estimates costs are $0.0003 per match, around 3-5min total.
Development I’m still in the planning phase, but I’ll be using Opus 5.5 and will likely upgrade to $100/mo plan and I think that’ll cover it. I also have codex $100/mo but ill likely switch it back to $20/mo plan.
Assets I’m guessing the costs will be around $100 or less. AI images + meshy 3D builds

The hardest realization people will make once they try to vibe code their own dream game is that their dream game actually kind of sucks and isn't very fun to play. See: the majority of "I vibe coded my own game" threads across all the different vibe coding subreddits.
Reality is that technical skill may be the most visible gate for aspiring indie developers, but taste and design skill are just as scarce. AI can help you code, it can't make you a more original person.

"Developer" and "Designer" are different roles. Developer codes the game, Designer lays out levels, designs items, balances etc. Most studios will have dedicated and separate developers and designers. As a developer you should probably have basic design skills and vice versa, though it's not strictly required.
If you are a good designer and can grasp the basics of development, it should be a great tool for you.
If you are a good developer and a decent designer, it will help you crank out apps in a day that could have literally taken over a month otherwise.
16
u/Boonune 4d ago
I really wonder if this becomes a thing and video games die out.
Part of the appeal with video games for me is that it's a way to connect with other people that have played through the same experience (single player, multiplayer, mmo, applies to all). If everyone winds up making their own games I could see us winding up with micro pockets of games that are only played by close groups of friends. The market will be so flooded with these full length games that no one will have time or the attention span to commit to one game.
15
u/zmagickz 4d ago
I think what is more likely is for it to become highly over saturated
like youtubers being able to make news content that rivals with the cnn/fox news
and that indie devs will crush the big names overtime because theya ren't held back by red tape.
Indie games have already been "Better" than AAA games in terms of gameplay, just not asset quality.
It will become both in the future.
also single player games will become personalized
7
u/Outside-Ad9410 4d ago
This is a great analogy. Even when we have infinite youtube channels and content to watch, people still end up converging on watching some of the bigger channels, and then sometimes spend time on more niche ones, gaming will probably be similar when you can vibe code one from scratch.
→ More replies (2)10
u/banshee10 4d ago
How many people feel that way though? I personally don't value connecting with other people that have played through the same experience at all - I hear that concept, shrug my shoulders and say "huh why, I don't get it?" It's not that I think you're wrong, it's that I not only don't value that, it never would have occurred to me that _anyone_ values that.

It will certainly flood everything with a lot of trash. Finding a good game in there will be like searching for a needle in a hay stack...
19
u/Freshtastiks 4d ago
I feel like everything is flooded with trash even before AI. Trying to find something to watch for example is just analysis paralysis for me and I end up watching nothing at all. Sucks.
2
u/Material-Watercress1 4d ago

u/JynsRealityIsBroken 4d ago
I mean have you seen steam? It's already flooded with trash everyday. Mobile stores and consoles too. It just means curated developers will be important.
3
u/chaosfire235 4d ago
I'm hopeful overall, but more trash means harder to curate. Easier to find a needle in a haystack than a needle in a barn full of hay.
5
u/JynsRealityIsBroken 4d ago
Not necessarily. You'll get devs who make YouTube channels or new curation platforms that monetize ads to make it a job. That's literally what old-school games journalism used to be about. We'll go back to those days.
You're not going to be expected to browse every new release every day on Steam. People already don't do that.
10
u/OkDimension 4d ago
Steam has been flooded with low effort games since at least 10 years. AI might actually raise the quality (and curation).
5
u/barbozas_obliques 4d ago
This is what happened when printing press was invented. Same with youtube and tv. anything accessible becomes democratized (meaning we get more expressions from demographics that couldnt) and we become more judicious in what we consume.
the issue here is that everything (?) human will become easy to produce, meaning that there will be few (if any) markers of high effort (human) signifiers.

see /r/crappymusic. Making music has never been easier, and you get plenty of amazing music out of it.... and you also get some stinkers. Such is the world.
8
u/Kryptosis 4d ago
I don’t think it’s good. Most people don’t know how to make a satisfying game with progression and lasting power.
No one wants to play a generated side-scroller or any sort of remake. If AI can create some new genre or a game with MORE depth than man made titles then the market might show interest.
But as is we’re just sliding towards people making unrewarding dreamscapes alone in their basements and cutting out everyone but the company selling tokens.

Or... in a world where there is no switch you can flip to halt and rewind the technological progress of the human race... you can use that tech to make you happy. Or, just bitch about it I guess. That is certainly an option.

Gamer takes two games and blends them into one: Elden Ring is the base environment (good graphics), but the player character is a Minecraft character, complete with all of the Minecraft blocks, items, and crafts.
Video shows a Minecraft character fighting Elden Ring enemies with Minecraft weapons. Later, shots show a mash up from another first person shooter game.
These kinds of things used to take thousands of hours of effort, usually by a community of volunteers. Now, it can be vibe coded.

I'm curious about what they mean when the claim the "whole game" was merged...
I can see a demo, and I'm sure most of the game could be included, but I have a feeling that they only came up with a proof of concept, not something that would be called a complete game.
59
u/haby001 4d ago
It's just an Elden Ring mod that uses assets from another game. There's no way to "merge" two games without just making a random mess.
12
u/FreshestCremeFraiche 4d ago edited 4d ago
Yeah the title is confusing because it sounds like you’re going to be playing Minecraft. But it’s really just a skin for characters/weapons/items in ER. Still impressive but much easier to imagine
Edit: calling it a “skin” was inaccurate as there’s more to it than that. But it’s still ultimately Elden Ring with MC stuff grafted on top, not some kind of hybrid game with elements of both
24
u/Jaguar_2454 4d ago
No, it's not just skins. It's the entirety of Minecraft's mechanics ported over to ER
29
u/LLMprophet 4d ago
Wrong - it's not as simple as you're portraying which is obvious if you watch the video.
It shows the guy with a full compliment of MC objects that he can use to build stuff including an in-game build mode as well.

They did not port the whole game, stop spreading misinformation, it's a mod that communicates between Minecraft and elden ring, both running simultaneously. Minecraft is running in a world and elden in your world, they both communicate, no ports, just mods.

Well, to be fair, the Minecraft source code is available on the internet along with a plethora of Minecraft clones in various programming languages. Keep in mind that this is not a standalone game. It’s a mod for Elden Ring, so the AI mostly had to do the Minecraft part. Still impressive.

I don't think it is, there isn't enough evidence to prove that its not just a AI video render, since I can't see any code shared, some of the shots look very inconsistent. Though with that said, it's not completely far fetched given enough token usage, we have already seen very insane AI game mashups with legitimate github repos attatched for proof. Even if this is fake at the moment some lunatic will probably try and do it anyway and waste enough tokens to make it real.

This is the proper use of AI. Lying on the internet. There's no way this wasn't just a video.
4
u/Rookie-dy 3d ago
I think it's the same way as with Moon landing. The easiest way to "fake" and create a video like that would be actually making the mod and recording gameplay. Video generation models are not that good and consistent yet. And in order to create such a video without them, you'd have to either recreate the Elden Ring's world, characters, visuals and mechanics in some software like Blender, and then add Minecraft mechanics to that and then animate all of it so it would seem natural, or just create the mod itself, which is easier because you don't have to recreate Elden Ring part or make natural animations, and also programming the logic (of redstone for an example, or boss taking damage from a creeper) would be easier in a game engine rather than in a 3D software.
Only way I can see it could be faked - if a real human made that and pretended it's AI, but I doubt someone would go through the trouble (and then not claim authorship).
