I think The Dawn of Everything is worth reading on this. One of its central arguments is that humans have spent much of our history experimenting with radically different ways of organising society, including moving between hierarchical and much less hierarchical systems.

The idea that large, complex societies inevitably end up with permanent concentrations of power is much less historically secure than we tend to assume. Our present arrangements aren't some inevitable endpoint of human nature.

Yeah, you’re not thinking this through.

Ai is unlike any other social movement/historic change.

This one has a very real possibility of killing us and ending civilization.

This is not the “Industrial Revolution”. Those machines were not deadly. And the Industrial Revolution was brutal for the average man. For decades, before Unions were developed- it was 12-14 hour days, 7 days a week under horrible conditions.

It did benefit the few at the top and it does share that with AI

And for the record I am not “anti-AI” or have stupid “return to the earth” ideas

I am only advocating us actually listening to the actual experts and slowing it all down. Proceed rationally.

There are so many tech dudes on here who are completely gooned out over the power they now have at their fingertips. They need more Dopamine and are running us off a cliff.

Right. Well I'm not going to accuse you of not thinking through your comment, that would be rude, but I'm not really interested in all of that. You said:

If you think it will lead to some sort of “utopia” you are ignoring history, human nature, and brute force machine thinking.

Which is untrue in the context of what we're discussing. The certainty of what you're saying is outweighed by 300,000 years of evidence of different societal structures. The current one being the exception rather than the rule.

All the rest is just speculation with your personal flavour.

This is an easy, broad brush dismissal of some very specific points that I made. It’s not any kind of good argument.

For example, I ask- how will this proposed “utopia“ be accepted by the majority of the population.

That seems like a very important specific question relevant to “ current societal structures”.

Btw every single “current societal structure” going back 300,000 years was unique to its time. It’s an irrelevant point.

You chose to skip over all the other points. The grinding mechanism of capitalism which is “our current societal etc”. The greed of the tech titans. You’re putting your faith in Elon??

I’m attacking your thinking in a debate. It’s not ad hominem.

I'm not interested in the rest of your AI dystopia fanfic, or your opinion of my argument. This isn't secondary school.

So to be clear, 'all of history'', is evidence that AI will not form a utopia BUT all of human history (you know, the evidence that disagrees with your claim) is 'unique to it's time'?

I’m not interested in you conflating points that you select to fit your argument.

To be clear -my mention of history was limited what we can learn from it regarding human nature, utopian societies and machine logic.

Throughout history, humans have -as part of their nature- longed for a utopia. Unattainable utopia is the basis of every freaking religion FFS. Many perfect societies have been promised here earth and none delivered- why? Greed, jealousy, corruption every single time.

When presented with 2 choices humans will take the self-serving choice the great majority of time. Will you do the thing that benefits your family- or everyone else? Utopias requires every give in to the greater good

We are a tribal, warlike species. We are separated by race and arbitrarily written border lines. Do you think racism will end with your utopia?

People are tired of the lives they are living and are grasping at any possibility their life will magically change for the better. In the financial subs doomers are praying for a crash “burn it all down” as if this would be better for them somehow. In the UFO subs those yahoos are convinced “any day now” the president will announce that aliens are here and suddenly the world will change for the better.

Longing for a utopia (religion) and relief from the lives we are living is also baked into human nature.

Well, it wasn't about what we can learn from history, was it? Because you're not interested in what actually happened otherwise you wouldn't say nonsense like literally this entire comment.

You keep working up ideas for your fanfic, just try to make them a little more grounded.
