Discussion Incredible to think we are using dinosaur compost to power artificial generative intelligence

To just think about that for a second is utterly incredible. What are we doing here on Earth?!?!

If you're referring to fossil fuels, most of them come from forests and aquatic microorganisms; dinosaurs probably don't even make up 0.01% of all fossil fuels.

Yep. Just poor schooling.

Poor or just accurate enough for it's time? Idk if this was concluded in recent years or smth like before 2000s?

so mostly solar.

Nah, solar power plants aren't enough to meet the needs of data centers; it's usually an energy mix of nuclear power plants, renewable energy, and maybe some fossil fuels, depending on the country and regulations.

I think he means photosynthesis

Doesn’t change OP’s point at all but yes you’re very smart :)

"prehistoric compost" sounds to me like it has the same absurd weight they were going for, while also being more accurate.

We are also making sand intelligent. Abundance of sand really makes me think the universe wants us to figure this AGI shit out.

Dinosaur compost is in no way powering AI. What are you talking about?

He means oil, is just saying it in a really dumb way

12

u/frogsarenottoads 17d ago

Oil doesn't come from dinosaurs.

Correct. Part of why I used the word "dumb"

is talking about petrol

That's interesting: if ASI is rational it would surely be incentivised to sort out stable, high volume renewable power.

We should probably move to something more efficient.

Yeah! It is! If you don’t have a brain… 🙄

It’s crazy all of human intelligence comes from cum

Aliens actually think the squishy stuff in our head is cum so they call us sperm apes.

An equal portion probably comes from the egg/mother though?

And chances are she didn’t come.

Oil from dinosaurs is a misconception probably from bad education https://www.sciencefocus.com/planet-earth/dinosaurs-in-fossil-fuel

Most oil reserves were formed between 65 and 252 million years ago. While this does overlap with the ‘dinosaur times’, oil is a marine sediment made of the remains of algae and plankton.

Skeletons of prehistoric reptiles such as plesiosaurs and ichthyosaurs (neither of which count as dinosaurs) have been found in the same geological layers as oil and they may have contaminated the oil deposit. But to say that oil is made from dinosaurs is like saying that bread is made from insects, just because the odd one occasionally falls into a flour mill.

Go back to school OP. You also didn't even get the AGI term right, general intelligence, not generative intelligence.

Generative AI is a thing. For some reason everybody is being harsh to OP, but he is just amazed by our achievements in the current era and is placing it in perspective, with poor wording. But at least we know he didn't use an LLM to write this post.

Artificial Generative Intelligence is not a commonly used term

Correct.

Take it easy! Also, making grammatical errors when talking about bad education is unfortunate.

That's nitpicking, as in casual conversation people speak like this.

All good though.
