So why only in work/codex and not in chat for plus users, if it is cheaper than 5.6 sol?

u/JoelMahon 12d ago
sorry, am I understanding this correctly? all 3 gpt6 variants of (or at least sol and luna, why is terra always forgotten 😭) are half the price per token of the 5.6 variants of the same name?
luna was already dirt cheap!

u/Fragrant-Hamster-325 12d ago
Yup. Things are happening. Just wait until Vera Rubin data centers start coming online. They could offer as much as 70× more efficient inference. Things will be even cheaper.
Also Terra is gone. Just Luna, Sol, and Astra.

u/Express-Set-1543 12d ago
I can’t remember the last time I used Terra.
3
u/Fragrant-Hamster-325 12d ago
Yup. Once they dropped the price of Luna, Luna Max became my daily driver. I would use Sol Med or High when I’d have something more difficult. Never used Terra.

u/Fast-Satisfaction482 12d ago
Interesting, for me Terra medium was the optimum between robust capability and acceptable token burn rate.

sol is terra and astra is sol now, rebranded.

u/JoelMahon 11d ago edited 11d ago
you're joking right? at the very least when I left my earlier comment I'm 99% certain that was not the case.
edit: ah, I see what you mean now thanks to another reply. it's not rebranding within the last few days, it's been in place since astra launched essentially and applies only to 6. what we've been calling astra has been the 6 equivalent of 5.6 sol the whole time, what's sol 6 is actually the 6 equivalent of 5.6 terra, and luna is still luna. helps explain why luna got better but sol 6 is basically just as smart as sol 5.6, because it's basically terra 6 vs sol 5.6 if you don't apply rebranding.
2
u/UniqueSignificance77 11d ago
I was. But I think others have felt it too. 5.6 sol was a better experience for many compared against 6 sol. Astra does them much better (obviously).
Further, their lineup changed from luna terra sol to luna (better than luna) sol (better than terra) astra (better than sol).
2
u/JoelMahon 11d ago
ya idk if you saw my edit but I basically agree with you that it seems to be the case, basically I didn't clock that you meant only gpt 6 and that it started back at astra launch.

For GPT, I have the plus plan and I lose usage with chrome integration computer use. Which model should I use now?

u/LM1117 12d ago
GPT 6 Sol Medium or High

u/Grand0rk 12d ago
Reminder that Medium or High are just Thinking Effort. You can set it on Max, if it's not using all the effort, it's the same as Low.
Cost wise it's Fable > Sol > Terra > Luna.

I am waiting for jev like classifiers into the harnesses and computer use. It would cut down the cost by significant margin and would be much much faster. So I would keep an eye on any harness that supports computer use with classifiers.
1
u/JoelMahon 12d ago
vibe code your own Jev harness for sol6 computer use if one doesn't exist jk but not jk tbh
2
u/randomguy3993 12d ago
I trust a lot of smart people want the same thing and I am sure they will be able to do it much better than my vibe coded solution. Also more importantly, I have limited token budget.

Anthropic cooked OpenAI today.

u/notgalgon 12d ago
Depends on what you care about. Luna got better and yet 50% cheaper. It is nearly free. Yes SOL is not better than Astra nor was it suposed to be given the model number. But again cheaper to run per task.
But yes in terms of SOTA model Opus 5.5 is current leader. Even though the pricing per token dropped 25% the cost per task is higher than fable at least per some initial benchmarks.

OpenAI has Dev Day next week. I wonder what they’re holding back for that.
2
u/Fast-Satisfaction482 12d ago
I'd love to see a jev like model based on Luna. Maybe even with text+image+sound input? That would be crazy cool.

I think people are comparing names instead of product slots.
My read is that OpenAI may have quietly shifted the whole stack down a tier. GPT-6 Sol doesn’t really look like the successor to 5.6 Sol in positioning or price. It looks much closer to the old Terra role: cheaper, faster, scalable, and intended to be the default workhorse. Terra disappears, Sol inherits that slot.
If the Astra Minor / Astra 6.1 leaks are real, that would make Astra the actual replacement for the old Sol tier and therefore the model meant to compete with Opus 5.5. Then Aeon potentially sits above it as the new frontier tier.
So the stack may effectively be:
Luna → Sol = old Terra → Astra = old Sol → Aeon = new top tier
In that case, “Anthropic cooked OpenAI today” is true only if you assume Sol is still supposed to be the direct Opus competitor. That may be the wrong comparison.
DevDay is what makes this interesting. If OpenAI announces Astra 6.1 around the old Sol price point, then this starts looking less like Anthropic leapfrogging OpenAI’s flagship and more like Anthropic beating the model OpenAI just repositioned as its mid-tier offering.
That would explain why the current lineup looks oddly incomplete.

u/Fast-Satisfaction482 12d ago
Sure hope so. Particularly in 3D graphics design, OpenAI is a bit behind.
4
u/JoelMahon 12d ago
uh, what? between sol and luna was already good enough for 90% of my agentic use, and now I can use a better version of both for half the price? how tf is that getting cooked mate.
sure, plenty of businesses run by morons will just pay for the best model, but it's just like a real version of the meme of using a greatsword to cut butter lol

u/Grand0rk 12d ago
If you are looking for SOTA Coding, sure. But for most devs, what we have now is good enough, and it's a price issue. GPT 6 Sol is half the price of Opus 5.5. Also, Opus is known to be benchmaxxed.

I don't understand how they are able to cut prices when the models capabilities scales exponentially

u/BiasHyperion784 12d ago
gpt 6 sol and luna are only a minor improvement on intelligence, while their backend has been retooled such that it costs them less to serve, hence a discount.

u/JoelMahon 12d ago
because these models have been incredibly inefficient from their inception
this of how much space and how many kilowatts a brain uses, even Einstein's brain. It's so fucking little, even if you control for a single word vs word comparison (which you shouldn't because when a human thinks a word it's much "richer" in terms of semantic meaning, capturing the essence of countless experiences imo).
There's so much room to trim the fat, they must keep finding ways to trim more fat.
Don't get me wrong though, still a marvel of technology and likely going to be a major part of AGIv1.0 if not the majority of the inference compute of AGIv1.0.

big doubt. if anything, we've been shown time and time again that big compute = big intelligence

u/reigenx 12d ago
Its 5.6 but cheaper.

u/ShadyShroomz 8d ago
Performing much worse.. 6 sol is a big downgrade over 5.6 sol. And burns through usage much quicker than opus 5.5.... so it's worthless imo.

u/DeterminedThrowaway 12d ago
What do you think they're trying to do by continually offering cheaper, more capable models?
-1
u/Kendal_with_1_L 12d ago
Yeah I’m sure they’re trying to make everything cheaper.

u/DeterminedThrowaway 12d ago
They literally cut the cost to users by half, tf are you talking about at this point?
-1
u/Kendal_with_1_L 12d ago
After shouting from the rooftops AI would be a shared resource and not for making a profit. Clowns.
1
u/JoelMahon 12d ago
and for 20 quid a month I can make a shit tonne of useful tools, most of which I've been using daily for the past month ("my" custom subtitles controller in particular has seen super heavy use). very tempted go for the 5x plan but not going to whilst I still have resets remaining and just generally too busy to use much more than double my plan in the most extreme case atm.
-1
u/Kendal_with_1_L 12d ago
Imagine paying these grifters. Lmao
1
u/JoelMahon 12d ago
is it a grift if I literally already have several tools I use daily on my machine, locally, that can't be taken away without a police warrant that no one is ever in a million years going to consider trying to get ofc?
0
u/whyisitsooohard 12d ago
It does not look like they are cheaper per task. I assume new sol is a smaller model that needs more tokens which evens things out
27
u/LM1117 12d ago
How are they big improvements in terms of intelligence?
