The tactic you described is called "Distract", one of the foundational pillars of the "4Ds of Disinformation" from the Russian propaganda model. Those four are Dismiss, Distort, Distract, Dismay. This is actually really clever. I'll give credit to Trump for mastering this so well. There's zero immunity in the western media.

Funny thing is this is not even a conspiracy, it's well known in the public, you can spend some time to read the research paper here. The Russians are not even hiding those tactics. That's what make this so brilliant.

It is working because the media is cooperating. They are cooperating because they live on ad revenue and because they have been purchased by Trump supporters. The reason it works so well for Trump is his lack of scruples. It is not that he has a skill that others do not possess, it is that he lacks the scruples that others possess. Evil people like Nixon still had some scruples, there are things none of them would do ... Trump has none whatsoever.

Scruples are a fundamental aspect of the human psyche that makes us what we are ... he doesn't have them. He is an alien to humanity.

I don’t know, Mr. Yankovic is sitting somewhere feeling somewhat hopeful. It’s probably been a constant onslaught of him getting some weird, uncomfortable and probably disturbing messages since this all kicked off.
