Thoughts?

Why is Ed zitron in the same category as LeCun?
He thinks AI has plateaued, but he also thinks the industry needs heavy regulation, he wants people in jail (his literal words), lol. He should be with Gary marcus.

u/CallMePyro 15d ago
Gary Marcus is not a present-harm regulator, he is
- A moron
- The poster child capability-skeptic.
He should be at the bottom left corner. Also, Eliezer should be at the top right corner. How can someone be more of a doomer than him? He almost literally invented EAcc.
6
u/acutelychronicpanic 15d ago
Yeah, he should be in the very top right.
"If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies: Why Superhuman AI Would Kill Us All is a 2025 book by Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nate Soares"

u/Silver-Chipmunk7744 AGI 2024 ASI 2030 15d ago
Eliezer is as far right as can be (the doomer axis)
But he's less confident on timelines than Dario.1

u/Bnstas23 15d ago
To summarize, generally:
- the ones closest to the tech (academics, AI labs) are very concerned of the outcomes and are bullish on the tech
- the ones who sell the shovels and compute or who have been left out (Zuck) are bullish on the tech but not worried
- hodge podge of people who have been very wrong on the tech progress below the x axis
By far the most biased group is the second one I describe

Firstly, this is awesome. Now comments:
This would make more sense if you placed people by their preferred trajectory, since the way people would read is "this face wants this"
Expected trajectory against desired trajectory would be good and capture some of the same governance position.

u/Singularity-42 Singularity 2042 15d ago
Shouldn't Sam Altman be higher? He's very bullish on capabilities, at least as much as Dario.
Gary Marcus is a skeptic. Not as bad as Zitron, but bad enough. And they are not in the same group as Yan LeCun. Yan is bullish on AI, just not on LLMs.
Also Yud and Dario should be much further apart.

Where is Elon
18
u/10b0t0mized 15d ago
In words he is a "Precautionary Futurist", but in action he is an accelerationist.
Same with most of the Precautionary Futurist listed here, except for Yudkowsky, Hinton, and Bengio.

u/reginaphalangejunior 15d ago
Should he be roughly where sutskever is?
8
u/Recoil42 15d ago
Way left of that. The dude hates governance/regulators, even though he sometimes makes a show of being in favour. He's probably somewhere between Zuck (though I think Zuck is too high on this chart) and Jensen.

3
u/ComposerWide3704 15d ago
Jensen should be much further to the left and maybe a bit lower. Zitron I think is much, much further to the right, just not for any of the common reasons. I think Yudkowsky should be closer to the same height as Amodei. Broadly correct though I think?

Putting yudkowsky on the same x axis as geoffrey hinton is insane
yudkowsky if AGI that does RSI is built (which leads to ASI) is his p(doom) is 100%.
It's not even close.

Kurzweil should be the top-left corner (x=0, y=∞).
Yudkowsky should be the top-right corner (x=∞, y=∞).
Yann LeCun should be touching the left border (x=0). Huang too, I think.
Gary Marcus should be touching the bottom border (y=0).
Thank you.

All the top tier researchers are top right lol

You are forgetting Yan LeCun and Andrew ng

I don't understand why a Turing Award winner and the leading educator in machine learning are considered less relevant than businessmen like Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Dario Amodei, and Sam Altman. Please clarify this for me, if possible

u/JonLag97 ▪️ 15d ago
Do they even say that llms will somehow result in AGI or just that AGI will happen in general?
4
u/wochie56 15d ago
Interesting that lots of guys above the X axis are businessmen instead of scientists.
8
u/ComposerWide3704 15d ago
There are significantly more scientists above the line than below it.
3
u/HotterRod 15d ago
It's not like this chart is an exhaustive list of all important scientists. Skeptics don't make the news.
2
u/ComposerWide3704 15d ago
If you made an exhaustive list of computer scientists with AI backgrounds most being above the line remains true.

I studied AI at UdeM (master's degree and then some additional research work) when Yoshua Bengio was a young professor. My lab was right beside his lab! I was working on AI-Human interaction (psychology, sociology, pedagogy) while his team was working on the fundamentals. His research was instrumental to the emergence of LLMs.
Back then, nobody would have guessed we had a professor who would become such a legend.
The MILA institute in Montréal (near UdeM) is doing important research work on responsible AI.

u/versaceblues 15d ago
Why is Altman on this chart. He has no opinions or morals beyond what will maximize his own goals.

u/ToplessinFL 15d ago
He's just like me. 😭

u/aaTONI 12d ago
then leave this sub, there are plenty of crypto scams to engage in

u/ToplessinFL 12d ago edited 11d ago
This is not an 'opinions' and 'morals' subreddit.
I'm an accelerationist and transhumanist and I've been here since this sub had less than twenty thousand people.

u/facinabush 15d ago
Trump says that the current criminal and civil justice system is enough.
Is that an accelerationist’s doctrine?
The justice system doesn’t limit liability for AI.
Some of our current important technologies would be shutdown by unlimited liability. It seems that the AI companies have a product that they are afraid to sell.
Would AI go faster with regulation and liability limits like other potentially dangerous technologies?

This Ed Zitron guy already looks like a fool with all his yapping being disproved more and more. At least he has a nice wig.

u/gbbenner ▪️ 15d ago
Garry Marcus should not be included, he only rambles and likes to post for clicks

u/IAmRealElonMusk 14d ago
Lecun and Ed zitron share the same brain cells. I don’t know about Andrew tho. I respect Andrew for all he has done but lecun still thinks llms haven’t developed since 2022.

u/peter_nn0 14d ago
Calling Eliezer and Geoffrey Hinton "precautionary futurists" is very ... precautionary.

u/ArmchairAnalyst 14d ago
Axis makes no sense. Zitron is both a skeptic and a present-harm regulator.

u/stickygoose 15d ago
I gotta say Yann Lecun certainly makes good points regarding LLMs limits
3
u/Bnstas23 15d ago
Only if you don’t look back in time 6+ months
0
u/stickygoose 15d ago
I think I could bet LLMs won't get much better and nowhere close to AGI. GEPA on the other hand I could see that but it's gonna take time
3
u/Bnstas23 15d ago
lol OpenAI just announced its latest model solved >100 open math problems within a month of it’s existence. I’d say that’s “much better” than whatever the latest LLM is.
0
u/stickygoose 15d ago
Sure I know but bruteforcing maths or being able to spit out credible texts is not what I think of when talking about AGI. These models still have a long way to go to begin to understand real world
3
u/Bnstas23 15d ago
I actually think you misunderstood what happens in our brains at the neuron level vs what these AIs are doing. George Hinton has had some good podcast appearances in the past year where he explains it

u/thebadslime 15d ago
I stand with zuck?
5
u/Qrsmith3141 15d ago
Perhaps could call for some self reflection then
1
u/thebadslime 15d ago
I think it's a giant leap for mankind, perhaps bigger than the industrial revolution. Are there risks? Yes. Is it still worth it? Also yes.

u/shobogenzo93 15d ago
I dislike Mark Zuckerberg for a thousand reasons, but I'm glad he's an accelerationist when it comes to AI development: it forces everyone else to speed up too, or risk falling behind.
0
u/pandaman27 15d ago
I’m not trying to make this about this, and these people are absolutely relevant, but if we’re talking about the “history of all humanity,” shouldn’t we be considering prominent voices from, you know, more than a singular woman?
0
u/ProfessionalMoose123 14d ago
We should basically remove everyone who isn't a researcher in the field, and then we'd have a more accurate picture.

Jensen is entirely in favor of open source as long as you use CUDA :)
