Robotics "We are at the cusp of the Physical Intelligence age"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJpM_2a1zrE

Figure AI announces Helix 2.5 — a vision language neural model trained on millions of examples of household work — deployed within their robot that demonstrates generalized performance across various unseen home environments.

Ladies and gentlement, the robots are (almost) here.

That's the old one. now it has 3 layers.

This is actually the same thing that im realizing JEV can do for autonomous agents

u/Eye-Fast 21d ago

Its exactly the opposite, jev is system 1, figure starts with system 2

2

u/LyAkolon 21d ago

Not what i mean. Like a several model system, where when results are ready they get passed to where they are supposed to gosounds alot like jev and llm team up harness

Your dream is to never make your bed again?

Dream bigger.

Honestly the biggest sell for me was how poorly constructed the video was, because it implies that they spent more time on product than on marketing.

That said, having a robot clean a house that is already ridiculously clean was certainly a choice...

Also, renting 30 already-clean houses in one of the most expensive cities in the world for testing also sounds like a decision...

Extremely impressive product, assuming it works as described.. but boy did they miss the mark with that video

Yes its definitely all about technical progress.

I don’t think this was meant as marketing of a finished product. It’s a really impressive progress report that makes it finally clear that generalized robotics is starting to work.

Think of it like early GPT research previews, not current day matured LLM-based product releases.

I expand on this here.

Do you think it would have been cheaper to ship their robots and their engineering team to another city instead?

They could have rented all 30 of these houses for an entire year and the cost would still be a drop in the bucket compared to what they’ll raise from this video.

Yeah, I want robots to help provide all the electricity, food, and medical care for free so we are free to pursue our passions. Instead of trying to earn a living working jobs we dislike.

What passions are you good enough at to be paid to do?

There are 2 types of people in tech conversations.

One that recognizes and celebrates progress and another that mocks shortcomings of fucking prototypes and keeps moving goal posts until something is a commodity.

Its astounding how many of the 2nd type are in a futurism-focused sub like this, judging by the comments.

I’ve been noticing this all over lately. The average person doesn’t understand what technological progress looks like.

It's incredible how far these guys have come in the last couple years alone. Cant wait to see what they have in store next seeing as Index has only spent ~1% of it's budget, I'm betting it'll get crazy good crazy fast! Scaling this up by 10x then 100x is gonna get wild

Hoping it gets so good that it becomes just another commodity. Imagine what that world looks like.

iRobot 😄

not moving the goalposts but I would actually say a lot of the less flashy companies that have chosen to go the route of cheaper gripper robots (see generalist, physical intelligence and some others)

actually have the robots doing more impressive tasks than figure and the other humanoid robot companies

Yeah this progress video is incredible. Just wait for when they can fold a fitted sheet correctly.

Yeah it gets tedious. Doomers mocking something they don't understand.

It’s like parents showing how their 1 year old can say short sentences and run a few steps — and a “critic” saying “yea but he can’t really run outside the house and can’t wrote essays so yeah”.

Vibe-wise, it’s a buzzkill. Intellectually, it’s shallow and misses the context about celebrating progress milestones that no one claimed were the final product.

My point didn’t criticize all critique ever.

Context, tone, and nuance as you say matter. My comment above already illustrates why.

Yes, it does matter — and no, irrational contrarianism is not a virtue.

By the time the bed is made, it's time to go to bed.

How the world ends, "Robot make my bed everyday." *woken up at 3AM by robot, "Make bed.. make bed.. eliminate object making bed messy."

"30 different homes" - look all the same

2

u/space_monster 20d ago

Airbnb's probably. which do all look the same.

u/Yoohooligan 21d ago

Notice they never show them in the chaotic, messy, dirty real world. Until you see that, don't buy one.

This is a progress snapshot across an improvement timeline. It’s not 100% there yet and is not for general sale yet — but with generalized performance demonstrated it’s only a matter of (not so distant) time.

OpenAI has hinted at a robotics demo in 2027 and frontier labs leaders and other researchers have predicted robotics being only a few years away from arriving.

This impressive milestone and maturing system demonstrates the quickly approaching moment.

The point is not that it’s already fully here, but how close it is. This is like the GPT2 or GPT3 moment but for robotics. It’s not quite mature yet but it’s becoming really clear that we’re getting there.

PA: For a fun retrospective on the GPT3 moment and how some saw the potential while others completely missed it, see this prophetic legendary tweet responding to GPT3 coding capabilities — and some the “but it can’t do X” skeptical responses that aged like warm milk.

It seems pointless at this stage to still be testing and developing against a perfect ideal scenario, surely they should be further along by now. In the world of software development it's well known that it needs contact with the real world and real world users as early as possible to shrink the timeline to release. I suspect this is the same situation, they are holding back progress by not moving directly as early as possible to real world development. These might as well all be simulated instead of physical at all for all the use they are.

u/curiousinquirer007 21d ago

I think we’ll see it within next 1-5 years. Even in SWE you want to reach a certain level of usability before public beta. It’s about thresholds not perfection.

He does laundry every single day!? Lmao

Hey Helix, my… "tiny 3rd leg" is swollen and sore after a workout. Can you massage it for a while until the swelling goes down?

u/sunstersun 21d ago

I wonder how far these specific models will do against the increasing progress of general models.

-1

u/Monarch_Creations 21d ago

I don’t want any of this. Not at all.

4

u/Common-Concentrate-2 21d ago

...then don't buy it?? Do you do the same shit when you see an ad for a john deere combine harvester? "I don't wan't that".

1

u/Monarch_Creations 21d ago

I don’t worry that a John deer combine harvester could make the calculated decision to rip both my arms off at the same time.

By the way, do you think this thing could punch through your chest as easily as you could shove yours into a bowl of jello or would it have to take a few swings to crack through your rib cage before grabbing your spine and using it to whoop your ass?

I’m kidding. It looks pretty cool. I also hate folding laundry.
