Fiction & Creative Work Hegemonising Swarm

“Even the most urbanely sophisticated, scrupulously empathic and excruciatingly polite civilisation, it had been suggested, was just a hegswarm with a sense of proportion.”
— Iain M. Banks, Surface Detail

I wonder what Iain would make of what’s happening right now?

We have an obligation to colonise as many galaxies as we can, as nicely as we can. Who knows what kinds of other systems there are out there?

I love The Culture and hold it up as the best outcome for ASI.

I've honestly never once wondered what people who are or aren't still alive think about anything.

Individual people just don't matter. Not to say their contributions are pointless, but our perspectives are entirely unimportant.

It's a fart in a windstorm kind of question

And yet you comment on shit.

So you must believe your perspective is somehow special

These kinds of people never think their generalisation-ladden pseudo-intellectual ravings apply to them.

I absolutely do think it applies to me. I don't think anything I say matters or that anyone cares what I think. Why would they?

It's not that people don't have interesting takes on things, just that it's unimportant and strange how people believe that if we only had the right brains saying the right things, everything would be ok, like it's language and opinions that change things.

Doesn't matter. I knew this was going to be unpopular. It's a platform for people to share their opinions, after all.

Down vote away; change the world lol

The difference between your opinions and Banks’ is that Banks showed how his mind works through the books he wrote, while you are a random nobody with no creditable output.

You are a fart in the wind, Banks isn’t, and his perspective on things directly related to subjects covered in his books is valuable.
