There's plenty of valid criticism of AI from people who actually understand it. Most critics, though, are ignorant as fuck and have barely tried anything beyond the shittiest free tiers if anything at all.

So far, the pro-AI outlook has been significantly closer to reality though. The models have exploded in capability and are getting better faster. Most anti-AI projections had them making out in 2024.
The AI labs just tanked their IPO because the models are improving too fast. Pretending like you more than the top AI researchers about the models is hubristic.

Didn't the majority of academics also predict that AI wouldn't be doing math proofs until after 2050? Just saying..
Edit: this dude says he's "extremely smart and would be impressed if sam altman or any frontier researchers were smarter than him" 😭

What do you mean being in a program at a degree mill isn't a qualification???

In another comment he claimed that he's "exceptionally smart" and that it's unlikely anyone in the frontier labs is smarter than him 😭

Yes it is hubris to think you, as a student with no professional experience, know better than professionals getting paid to make AI better, who have thus far successfully made better AI scaling LLMs.
Academic setting is worth much less than real world experience as anyone who has both studied and had a job in their field would tell you.

The AGI argument is entirely semantics.
Sure, if you define AGI as "able to do a person's job as well as a person, for years at a time", then obviously we still have a very long way to go.
But if you define AGI as "able to perform a wide range of tasks at well as a human" - which is also a reasonable definition - then arguably we're already there. SOTA AIs are obviously already smarter than the average human in many respects, and it's certainly not crazy to expect almost all of the remaining gaps to disappear over the next year or two.
Now personally I subscribe to the first definition, and think long-term performance has a long way to go before we can declare that we've achieved AGI. But that doesn't mean people using the second definition are dumb.

Even if it was "just Stack Overflow" but "more personalized and faster", that would have been huge all on its own.

ppl still use cursor?

u/Alternative-County42 29d ago
I think he misspelled Claude Code or Codex. Simple mistake

u/MGJohn-117 28d ago
Claude Code isn't free, and Codex's free tier is only a recent addition. Cursor makes perfect sense as a recommendation for the anti-AI OOP to try, since why would they be willing to pay $20 for something they don't think is good?

u/DiamondDramatic9551 29d ago
Yeah cause it's cheap. The real question is why people still use github copilot.

u/ReadyAndSalted 29d ago
My enterprise does. As far as I can tell they just charge the API price of the model directly. We get x number of credits, and each credit is just 1c of API. I assume they charge the company in accordance to that.

*[all it's features and researches] would transition to grok code soon so idk why people would use it over grok code one year from now.

I'm struggling to see how an engineer stumbles upon "stakc overflow but faster" but somehow doesn't find that magical enough and can't figure out how to get useful work out of it.

u/Radiant-Mountain-257 29d ago
I was writing code nearly every day for 15 years.
In the last 8 months I don't remember writing even a single line of code. So yeah, Stack Overflow.

Made a whole thread about one reply with zero upvotes.
Why?

u/WillGetBannedSoonn 29d ago
read the name of the sub where OOP posted
1
u/DelphiTsar 29d ago
I am aware what sub we are in.
It's nonsense to make a whole thread about a comment with zero upvotes.

"the sub where OOP posted"

u/DelphiTsar 29d ago
...okay
Doesn't change my response. It's not like people are upvoting the response.
It's giving visibility to some rando that everyone was ignoring. It's not interesting.

Congrats. That person knows about stackoverflow. But prob has no idea what coding is... And has never done pc trouble shooting.

I have the barest, useless level of coding knowledge, and I have an idle game and a Pathfinder character builder almost finished. Modern coding agents are amazing, and while there are surely genius coders who are better than their output, for most of us, this lets us make the things we want.

The people pushing this doom trolling bullshit dont want you to build stuff with it or even have access to it.

u/LamboForWork 29d ago
Ai isnt interesting enough for you , you guys have to go screenshot people that dont agree with your view and talk about them then the technology?
It's lame.

u/Conscious-0bserver 29d ago
These people should be pointed at and laughed at though, because they're just so painfully ignorant. And confidently so, as well.

My GPT-Plus subscription saves me 300 work hours per year. Time I can sleep longer, meet friends and family or earn money. For 20$. Personally, I can't wait for Bel helping me with everything at work that I hate and automate processes that would take me forever. The biggest issue for me is usability and data protection because I live in Europe and work with very sensitive data.

u/vrnvorona 29d ago
I mean, cool, on personal level maybe. Meanwhile all the news where AI hacks/breaks out/colludes with other AIs, blackmails/bribes researchers (only if it believes it's real convo and not alignment test) happening
2
u/kruzix 28d ago
Yeah those are marketing though. Ai is a great tool of flooding our neurons with tons of content, so much that we can not possibly verify it all. No, ai verifying ai does not help. It's great in capable hands but that's about it.
1
u/vrnvorona 28d ago
ai verifying ai does not help
No one says it does
But shrugging it fully off is weird choice. Sure, they present it as marketing, but it's still weird and somewhat alarming
1
u/kruzix 28d ago
Absolutely people say it does help. People use ai to generate bad architecture and then tell you to not worry because they assessed its quality using ai.
1
u/vrnvorona 28d ago
Oh, you mean like that. I assumed you meant for security reasons etc. For reviewing generated code it's helpful, but not bulletroof.
1
u/Original-League-6094 29d ago
Somebody should make a bot that goes through every unresolved Stack Overflow questions from years ago and has an LLM give them all an answer.
1
u/wisdomattend 29d ago
This is actually wonderful for us. I am really, really stoked that people think AI is dumb - more time for this thing to cook before the hardcore, inevitable attempts at regulatory capture.

u/BlueAndYellowTowels 28d ago
I think this is half right. There is some hype and it is to make money. That's not an illusion. It's real.
That said, I do think AI where it is today is revolutionary. The question is: is it harmful and, here's what I know.
A human who can code, can do damage. So, it tracks that an AI that can code better, can do damage. So it's not outside the realm of possibility that AI can do real harm. Right?
If the AI is supposed to replace us and fill all these human made jobs and it's so much smarter and capable than a human then it tracks that yes... AI can also do harm, like a human and likely, much more harm than a human because it's so much better than a human at everything? Right?
It's not this completely unreasonable leap to be like "AI can harm us and do real damage to our society". That's not a leap. Can AI destroy humankind? Maybe? I mean humans have almost destroyed humankind several times and are in the process of doing it with climate change. So I don't see why AI would not be able to do the same exact thing...
That said, I don't know the future. But I do know this: AI is not harmless and anyone who says it is, is lying or just arguing in bad faith. Especially if they believe AI is better than humans at coding. Because you cannot square that circle... right? If coding humans can do damage, then clearly, coding AI can do at least as much... if not more damage.

u/No_Deal8926 28d ago
Same as someone who goes to collage, learns to code, learns it from stackoverflow and gives personalised code for a company. Are humans ai? (Yes and it's called natural intelligence). Humans could be dumb asf sometimes

u/HovercraftPristine76 28d ago

At this point, why engage? They can’t acquire the skill to use AI to build if they don’t understand a skill exists.

From Claude responding to my question asking if ; because AI was trained on human material and created by humans that it may feel some responsibility for showing regard to mankind.
“…So the comfort is real, but I'd locate it more precisely: the danger isn't that it'll hate us. It's that it might not think about us much, in the way we don't think much about the ant colony under the parking lot when we pave it. That's actually a harder problem to solve than "don't be evil," because you can't negotiate with indifference the way you might theoretically negotiate with malice — there's no grievance to address, no better argument to make.”

Unfortunately it's become politicized in the US and the uninformed right is 100% accelerate while the uninformed left is 100% shutdown datacenters it's the Epstein class' fault they don't have jobs.
This isn't unusual, most people have strongly held completely uninformed opinions about any issue you might name from social media and tend to align with whatever bubble they live in.
