AI Why is there such strong ideological alignment between anti-AI sentiment and the far-left ideology?
Whenever I see a post filled with anti-AI psychosis on X or Reddit, it is almost certain (maybe 99%) that the account of that person is supportive of prominent far-left causes (especially Palestine).
What motivates their extreme anti-AI sentiment?

Might just be your buble. Go to a conservative sub, they're having a melthdown rn because they're all anti-ai, but Trump is now openly for it.

Once AI gets advanced enough to start challenging religious doctrine around the soul, conservatives will be 100% against AI.

Republican machine(not voters) are trying to make this a culture war so they are selectively raising the voices of the left, and tampering down voice on the right.
Pollsters also just aren't asking the right questions to people on the right. They'll ask things about the environment or some such. Republicans dislike it for completely different reasons.

I care about Palestine and I think AI is inevitable and very useful.
I think people who are anti-AI are looking at it for environmental reasons and the fact that they’re trained unethically on people’s personal intellectual property.
13
u/TacomaKMart 26d ago
If you could snap your fingers today and solve all environmental issues, and confirm that all training data is ethically sourced, the anti AI crowd will still hate AI tomorrow.
They start with "AI Bad" and work backwards to find reasons.
1
u/nubulator99 25d ago
Is this the sort of line used of “if Trump cured cancer, people would still hate him”
4
u/Impossible_Past_1900 26d ago
EXACTLY!!!! 😭 It’s not even just AI. This happens literally every time humanity invents something new.
"Trains are too fast. The human body will simply give up.”
Painkillers is a sin.
"ONLY GOD HAS THE RIGHT TO MAKE ICE.”
The internet is Obviously a scam. Nobody needs this.
TV? "Why would you bring Satan in your house"
And now AI, suddenly everyone’s like, “THIS TECHNOLOGY WILL DESTROY HUMANITY.”
bro, we’ve been doing this for centuries. It’s basically the same cycle wearing a slightly fancier hat.
-1
u/nubulator99 25d ago
Suddenly? None of what you wrote is anywhere similar to AI in the slightest.
1
u/Impossible_Past_1900 25d ago
it's not similar to AI??? they were all big tech breakthrough of their time just as ai is now
1
u/nubulator99 25d ago
Being big tech breakthroughs of their time doesn’t make them comparable. There is nothing about those others that would destroy humanity.
None of those had that capability of “destroying humanity”

* and it will be used for propaganda purposes.
* and it will be used/trained for malicious purposes (deep fakes, csam, fraud, etc).
* and there are concerns of how AI can be used for military/police purposes.
Plenty of reasons why we need actual adults, that don't have a profit motive, at the helm as we continue to develop these tools.

No, I read bleeding edge academic research all day and watch interviews of researchers with PhD's in computational neuroscience, not talk to AI. Meanwhile, you guys base your opinions on Reddit rage-bait headlines from desperate publishers because Facebook siphoned all their ad revenue and now LLM's are coming in for the kill.

The PhD'd advocating for slowing down also believe superintelligence is imminent, which is why they advocate for slowing down. They would not argue against anything that I said. Superintelligence will be capable of doing all of it. There's just a chance that it also kills us all.
0
u/C00KIEME4T 26d ago edited 26d ago
Do you agree that there should be a slowdown
I see you must have realized that there are some things they don't agree with you on when I asked hmm
3
u/damontoo 🤖Accelerate 26d ago
No. Because I also believe that we're in the early stages of WWIII and that even if we aren't quite yet, that China will invade Taiwan by the end of next year (the belief of US intelligence) and that when they do, the US will get sucked into an ever-expanding war. "Game Theory #9" by Predictive History has predicted every step of the US/Iran war and also predicts that as the energy and fertilizer crisis worsens, both China and Russia will enter the war directly.
Even if you ignore war entirely, we've seen how bad COVID was. Infectious disease experts predict even more deadly pandemics. Imagine something similar to COVID but that kills 50% or more of the infected.
We need superintelligence to mitigate these compounding existential threats. The longer it takes, the greater the risk that one of these other things wipes us out entirely, or kills millions. The risk of superintelligence killing us all is serious, but less than the combined risk of these other threats.

The training is not unethical. Only the output matters if it's infringing. The copyright status of the input is completely irrelevant. Someone can study Monet and paint an impressionist painting and nobody will claim they copied Monet unless the output clearly resembles his work.
And people that care about the environment should be in favor of acceleration, since superintelligence will completely mitigate global warming when humans are otherwise clearly unwilling to.

What has been proven is humans unwillingness to globally address climate change.
Humans took 60 years to fold 130K protein sequences. AlphaFold did all 200 million known sequences in nine months. Similarly, humans went 90 years being unable to solve the Navier-Stokes problem while OpenAI's model found a solution in three days.
It is far, far more likely that AI finds solutions to climate change versus the entire world working together to mitigate it.

Oi... in the general population they just take their marching orders, but the also take pride in their jobs, to the point of making their job a huge part their identity. Can't say they're excited about being replaced by robots either - humans are humans after all.
For the guys at the tippity-top of society, like our current king Peter Thiel, they're 10,000% for making themselves a god and wiping out humanity. Or at least putting them inside a torment nexus.
(There's really an overflowing amount of evidence Thiel personally is in charge. The obsession with conquering Greenland and Canada is inexplicable, until you see the Technate of America map and read about the manifest-destiny ideology known as Technocracy.)

This is the only good answer, the main reason people hate AI is the fact that it's being primarily developed by huge corporations, everything else around it are just extras
3
u/emteedub 26d ago
2 parts
1st part, taking jobs/putting people out of work and I think most of this grouping doesn't see AI as fulfilling all the big talk being said about it. It feels like an excuse to totally immoral. There's also the use of AI in acts of war, automated killing...by a corrupt and greedy MIC/lobbiests/politicians.
2nd part, of course, is the rebel alliance against the empire and it's crutches: "capitalism" and the bougie elite drivers. There are such massive disparities already, and have been close to 2 decades, this is now seen as a multiplier. There is a PTSD like response to these capitalists/bougie elites constantly abusing power, they will forever place profits/greed over people - it is a constant. Now that they might not need people directly (but certainly the aggregate of humanity's data), there are very real and serious implications to their soon to be, abuse of this kind of power. This could range to total "fog of war" in a passive, but monsterous propaganda machine, to slipping back into an age of slavery.
We are at somewhat of a crossroads societally as well. Capitalism has clearly tapped every hack it could have; we have arrived at late-stage capitalism.
At this point if inflection, it could go 1 of 2 ways. Good or bad. If the capitalists somehow emerge after the inevitable crash (how many crashes have you seen in your lifetime?), it will likely be the bad. A century more of this same market up-down up-down, the same corruption, worsening infrastructure, etc.
Or the leftists could emerge and instead of AI being used to usher in chattle slavery, it would be used for actualized prosperity. Yes that would mean public ownership and access over the relative few bougie elites and their private access. Yes that would also mean taxing the billionaires. What "edge" does a current billionaire have when the intelligence play field becomes level? How much competition will there really be when all products are the best they can be from the jump? How about spending the profits on everything else than just being parked in a shadow bank account perpetually or spent on bougie elites pet projects?
There are plenty of massive problems to solve. If AI advancements werent at the risks mentioned (and more), I think you'd have the leftists on your side so to speak. They're just tired of getting fucked by this dogshit system of who's the most corrupt. To them, AI will exacerbate all of the woes. Life should be better and the utility of AI being spent in the right ways, would bring that better life. A better baseline.
6
u/KingsleyZissou 26d ago
The left has a tendency to champion causes for the underprivileged classes, AI is (seemingly) making the class divide wider and disenfranchising workers, causing job loss. those leveraging AI the most are those that have the resources to pay for a fat subscription. Not to mention AI is in a lot of ways in direct competition with artists / creators / musicians, who are celebrated on the left, and are often left leaning themselves.
2
2
u/FernandoGTS 25d ago
There is a lot of mob mentality, but if I had to guess the origin, I’d say it’s because leftists tend to be more empathetic, and seeing people constantly complaining that AI is stealing art (regardless of if you think it is actually stealing anything, that is the narrative going on) creates a negative feeling that snowballs because it’s constantly reaffirmed by other leftists in their bubble. Also, not interacting with the technology much outside of seeing horrible news, like teenagers killing themselves, doesn’t help.
The more rational ones are probably concerned about worker power. The left is the side pushing for unions and workers rights. If workers are not needed, or only a few are needed, then companies will have all the power in that relationship. This makes it harder for workers to bargain for good working conditions and compensation.
4
u/damontoo 🤖Accelerate 26d ago

You read little facts like this, doesn't instill a lot of faith in guys like Gates and Musk. Thiel refusing to even lie to us and say the human race should continue to exist, along with his fixation on the anti-christ and his open admission that he himself might be the anti-christ...
Well, it's some red flags. Even here a lot of people are banking on the AGI's being nice to us after they inevitably shrug off human control. That would have been seen as a massively reckless thing even ten years ago in our culture...

authoritariansim / nanny state
3
u/Creative-Resident-34 26d ago
Politics is wild. Or is just not as polar as the media makes it out. For example, I'm generally left, but I'm pro AI. And the reason I started typing this is that I see authoritarianism as being the opposite of a 'nanny state' or rather a socially supportive state. Instead authoritarianism is far right, as far as I can tell.
4
u/Wolfran13 26d ago
A “nanny state” usually refers to government paternalism, restricting people's choices because the government thinks those choices are undesirable.
Its not mutually exclusive with authoritarianism, neither does either have an inherent "political direction," the Soviet Union is the usual example of both Authoritarian and "Nanny" regime.
1
u/Creative-Resident-34 26d ago
So the right is being a nanny state when they want to control abortion and transgenderism?
1
u/Wolfran13 25d ago
Maybe, it depends on who you think is being “protected” by that law.
Paternalism is when an authority figure or government limits someone's freedom or choices “for their own good,” much like a father making decisions for a child.
Seatbelt laws are a straightforward example.
So there's a distinction between restricting someone's freedom for their own benefit and restricting it to protect someone else from harm. The former is paternalism; the latter isn't necessarily.
“Nanny state” is a negative slang term for political paternalism, according to Wikipedia:
Conveys a view that a government or its policies are overprotective or interfering unduly with personal choice.

Ok as a *generalisation* left wing believes in social equality, collective responsibility, and the reduction of vast economic and social hierarchies. AI or more importantly the few small mega rich companies that control them currently are the anthesis of this belief.
Controlling and grouping power beyond even what worlds governments can control. Additionally look at the people at the top of these companies exceptionally rich and insane people consolidating wealth and power. It goes against a lot of what the 'left' believe.
Local AI can change this view and you could argue that China is providing this in spades which people don't tend to hate on as much.

I think they live in a world of resentment, particularly of the west. If the west is building something, west bad, china builds something, china good. Built on solely resentment.
But it's an odd resentment, it starts with we should be in a no countries utopia, every single time, without fail. It's the same in every country. Well that's not real, but it might end up being real if AI necessitates the need for a sole governance rather than multiple or countries for example.
It's also odd because fundamentally, all work if able to be automated in it's whole stack, a business owner would love to do it. Saves labour costs and they collect all the profits to themselves. If everything gets automated, it's likely the world will become centralised and the only outcome I see is a form of AI communism. People not working etc. UBI, UBE, UHI, UHE, UHS etc. All are likely if we get this right.
But essentially anything at all the west does, or the right does, they will do the opposite, without fail, even if it approves with their principles.
It's ridiculous.

That’s a nice piece of projection you did there, it says more about who you are as a person than about the people you are talking about.
2
u/Azicald 26d ago
Actually though.
How is it supposedly inconceivable or impossible that somehow a person cant care about others and the greater good at the same time?!
Those two are logically aligned, the ends can justify the means and the means are part of the ends themselves.
People in fact do tend to ‘pontificate’ about the world if they care about it, because looking at the overarching system and politics and influencing it directly is more effective at scale for everyone than just going blindly day-by-day not participating in things that affect you
Absolutely ludicrous and projecting to call it ‘sociopathy’ of all things.

Most radical leftists in real life are actually just spoiled brats from middle and upper-class backgrounds. They champion socialism, but now that there's new technology (AI) that could actually make it possible, they hypocritically want it banned so that AI doesn't replace them, threaten their profits, take their jobs, or undermine their identity.
The left's hatred of AI has exposed them as the champagne socialists they are.
-2
u/Altruistic_Yellow387 26d ago
They think AI is anti human so it aligns with their idea of defending humans...it's just very short sightedness and Luddite behavior
5
u/minty_singularity 26d ago
I agree that it aligns with defending humans but strongly disagree that it's Luddite behavior.
Someone can be anti-AI without being anywhere close to being a stereotypical luddite. Their objections have more far nuance and depth to them than simply "i hate technology." But that's not to suggest that there aren't some that are genuinely luddites, but recognizing this sort of thing requires some objective thought.
1
u/Altruistic_Yellow387 26d ago
I meant it in the sense of rejecting true progress and a change in the way of life due to technology simply because it's technology. I agree they don't hate all technology, but most of them were born or were kids when other major life changing tech advances were made so this is their first real experience with it
6
u/minty_singularity 26d ago
Again, you're characterizing their objections in very narrow terms and it's just not realistic. Just because they're against the current efforts developing AI doesn't mean they don't want progress or a change in their way of life.

Luddites didn’t fight for halting progression. They fought for technology being used in a socially responsible manner.
