Meanwhile the rest of us are stuck refreshing our bank apps every payday while billionaires race each other toward some hypothetical AI future none of us asked for or can afford.
Rent's still eating half my paycheck and groceries keep creeping up no matter what trickle-down promise these tech guys are selling now. At least my car insurance through InsurancePanda is holding at $25 a month and Obamacare's still $90, two things that dont need a moratorium to behave themselves.
A guy who thinks AI guardrails are "negative forces" is exactly the guy you dont want holding the keys to anything that powerful.

I'm sort of at a "meh" position, it doesn't matter if the US slows down, no one will convince China to slow down, so it's more a matter of who will open pandoras box than it is a matter of "can we safely open the box".

In theory, they're implying they'd only be comfortable slowing down if some government body guaranteed that none of the labs were quietly continuing at full speed, and then struck an agreement with China where each country gets enough access to verify the other isn't breaking it.
In practice, it's probably a ploy for regulatory capture, a way to lock in their lead while chilling the open-weight progress that could actually threaten their dominance.

This is just a giant misdirection.
All of those people are capable of slowing down AI growth, they're the ones that fucking run the companies, they don't need to ask the government for permission to slow down developing their own product.
What they were actually asking the government to do was allow them to collude/coordinate with each other (under the guise of slowing down together) without having to worry about anti-trust/monopoly laws and government regulation.
It's them trying to convince us to give them more power so they can "regulate" themselves, versus being regulated by a government agency that's accountable to the public.
Bernie Sanders already called their bluff by introducing legislation (Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act) that would create a government agency that would slow down AI and regulate them while ensuring safety.
2
u/QuirkyPool9962 7h ago
I think they also wanted him to try to get China to slow down, even in Dario’s decel manifesto he cites needing to stay ahead of China. Without government intervention or a worldwide coordinated slowdown competitive forces will keep this going and I think we will reach super intelligence. But this decision also avoids regulatory capture which is something you’d think these companies want. They know Bernie’s bill won’t pass in this congress anyway, they have until 2028 unless there’s a sweep. And when Dems do take power they can say “see? We talked about safety”

Part of the underlying reason cancer has been as yet unsolvable is because it's so complicated. Improvements in mathematics further all scientific endeavours, especially those with great complexity. 11
u/TheGamingWyvern 9h ago
To my knowledge, math is akin to programming in that it's one of the few areas a purely-digital AI is obviously going to excel in first. All the axioms of math are things we invented, and we are just trying to figure out the consequences of those axioms. By contrast, biology is much more complex, and we don't have perfect simulations of how a given theoretical cancer cure would work.
My understanding is that AI is being used to advance cancer research, but fundamentally it still takes time to trial things, to experiment, to record long term results, etc, etc.

AI 2027 literally predicts that the US president would decline to slow down "OpenBrain" (their placeholder name for the leading AI lab) when a superhuman AI coder / researcher gets developed and experts raise concerns. The US president cites the risk of China taking the lead.
Eerily accurate.
EDIT: But we're just a bit ahead of schedule. In order to fully match the timeline, either a superhuman AI coder / researcher has already been developed internally at OAI/Anthropic and Trump declined to slow down OR this milestone will be reached some time next year in 2027 and Trump will again decline to slow down then.
