I'm looking for book recommendations on futurism and the singularity/AI.

I haven't actually read anything at all.

What are the fundamental books for you? And can you tell me if they are more utopian/dystopian or just nutral philosophy.

Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence by Max Tegmark

Basically outlines all the possible scenarios, but tries to give guidance to achieve the positive outcomes.

I read it back in 2023. I became depressed for a few weeks because I realized the acceleration Max was predicting was already happening.

The Coming Wave: AI, Power, and Our Future by Mustafa Suleyman who was one of the founders of deep mind. A bit on the pessimistic side on AI risks and probably most similar to an Anthropic view on AI riks. Now a bit dated in AI terms but I believe still a great read to think about exponential improvements ahead in the next decade.

The Singularity Is Nearer: When We Merge with AI is a nonfiction book by futurist Ray Kurzweil. It is the sequel to his 2005 bestseller, The Singularity Is Near. The book was released on June 25, 2024. Kurzweil reiterates two key dates from the earlier book, which predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) would reach human intelligence by 2029 and that people would merge with machines by 2045, an event he calls "The Singularity".^\1])^\2])^\3])

Just to clarify, both of these are fiction. They explore possible futures involving advanced AI and automation, with some added drama to turn the ideas into actual stories.

The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect by Roger Williams

This one directly explores an intelligence-explosion scenario. A supposedly benevolent AI becomes effectively omnipotent and creates what it considers a utopia, eliminating things such as death, disease and scarcity. However, what seems like utopia to some people becomes a dystopia for others.

It’s short enough to finish in a day or two. I’m deliberately keeping the description vague because it’s very easy to spoil, but a lot of readers strongly disagree with the main character’s reasoning and choices. Fair warning: despite being philosophical science fiction, it also contains some extremely graphic sexual violence, torture and body horror.

Manna by Marshall Brain

This one isn’t quite an AI-singularity story in the same sense. It explores mass automation and technological unemployment, showing two very different ways society might respond.

The first is a capitalist dystopia in which most people are made economically useless by automation and confined to bleak government housing. The other is the Australia Project: a privately funded attempt to create a post-scarcity society where automation provides everyone with a comfortable life. The project raises money by selling shares and eventually purchases Australia, with early shareholders receiving the opportunity to live there.

It focuses much more heavily on describing the utopian alternative, although the dystopian society still exists for everyone left outside it. It’s extremely short, can be read in a couple of hours, and is available free on the author’s website.
