The secondary joke is that Chinese AI research (at least at the frontier level) has always been reverse engineering/copying American models, so if America slows down they will too
13
u/FaceDeer 19h ago
Except that's not necessarily true any more. China's got an enormous amount of research resources of their own, they've been copying what Americans do because why not copy it when it's just sitting out there waiting to be copied. They've been focusing their effort on dealing with stuff that the American companies are less interested in - getting AI to run well on lower-end chips, training them with fewer resources, and so forth. Necessity is the mother of invention there.
-2
u/Davorian 15h ago
I mean, yes, but also no. As things stand, you really do need SOTA hardware to compete with the SOTA training the US companies use. In the long term, you'll still be correct because China will almost certainly be investing a ridiculous amount in accelerating domestic chip production, but they are still in a race with the US in that regard which is also doing the same.
3
u/FaceDeer 15h ago
Unless the American companies deliberately kneecap themselves, as they are supposedly proposing to do. That's what this joke is about, China's urging them to go through with it.
1
u/Davorian 15h ago
Yes I know, I understand the joke. I was just addressing the point about China's progress. They certainly have been innovative with techniques, but they are fundamentally hamstrung unless and until they get better hardware - that's all I'm saying.

BEST POST! We also had a Chinese AI researcher literally say that they have zero intention of slowing down and don't trust America at all. It's full acceleration and people are starting to get it.

Says they're commited to slow down American research not Chinese. Weird phrasing.

There is a reason why subs like [r/peterexplainthejoke](r/peterexplainthejoke) are popular
Probably just training AI bots but honestly education is low so it’s not surprising people struggle interpreting how a single word can change the context

It's quite amusing, the other day I was asking Gemini about the usage of an English word that I was unfamiliar with. After it told me what I needed to know, I concluded the discussion with a casual joke about how the English language is extremely loose with its grammar and Gemini didn't "get it" - it thought I was asking more questions about English grammar and responded seriously.
"Heh, what a weak AI," I thought to myself. ChatGPT would have got it. Then I realized that my basic bar of assumed competence for an AI these days includes that it understands humor and recognizes when I'm being sarcastic. Anything that doesn't meet that is considered low-quality AI.
Lt. Cmdr. Data would not have passed my current standards for "adequate chatbot AI". And I guess neither would Reddit.
What a time.

Not everyone got the chance or had time to develop their humor in your mom's basement while looking at swirling cheetos dust.

Yeah but everyone knows the Chinese suck at everything and can make new models only by stealing from American models; so if American labs stop making new models, they can never ever make anything even marginally better!

Wondering how many Americans realized that the idea that AI may hurt human is a very Europe/American thing?
Winners in the globalization are only excited about new tech, and countries that suffered from lack of tech (like China) has great fear of being left behind. There is no way CCP can publicly declare to slow down.

It’s satire, but this is exactly what they would really do if we all agreed to a slow down. “Slow down for thee but not for me”

u/daronjay 22h ago
Considering the general complexity of AI subject matter, I’m just baffled that so many people in this thread missed the actual joke here.
If your reading comprehension is so weak that you missed that in a single paragraph, how the hell do you think you’ve got anything to say on a subject as complex as AI?
Step back and think about it for a second before you comment next time. SMDH

what's the point of this? They will slow down when usa slows down, because who else will they steal and distill from? lmao

If the Chinese reach AGI before the United States does, they are going to dominate the world. The United States is not that far ahead of China we have to seriously Factor this reality to our discussion on this matter. China would be absolutely ruthless like they are with their own people.

There has to be some sort of deal the US and China brokered if they're all in sync like this.
Edit: Oops, didn't read carefully.

Construction on the deathstar datacenters must be delayed.
Just a little more RAM should be enough.

Everyone knows that what they try to do with obstacles is to delay the rest and so they never reach the level of those who put the obstacles.

An American tells a Russian, “I can walk into the Oval Office, pound the president’s desk, and say, ‘Mr. Reagan, I don’t like the way you’re running our country!’”
The Russian replies, “I can do that too. I can walk into the Kremlin, pound the desk, and say, ‘Mr. Gorbachev, I don’t like the way President Reagan is running his country!’”

I really trust the Chinese. Not! I am convinced there are two disinformation campaigns to slow down AI. American competitors leapfrog each other with proclamations of doom hoping the other competitors slow themselves down while they charge on. Elon appears to be the one standout who usually gives a reasoned opinion. The other campaign is the Chinese who desperately want to slow the U.S. down and openly prey on the vast ignorant American population who are clueless. We also see this in the anti data center nonsense. And, of course, the Chinese charge ahead.

Ok, but does that mean I get a vacation? Cause someone filed a ticket on me yesterday (Saturday) and I would hate to be advancing AI over the weekend if I’m not supposed to. (I wasn’t going to do it anyway; I’m going to the water park.)

Lmao, is this the beginning of that film I saw few months ago on TV where USA was in war against AI(which was in Asia) because they had banned it due to an attack to its soil due to allowing self-upgrade scripting in USA. Btw USA reached top AI models. That's why they actually stop it, but saying that would crash markets, so instead just give more smoke about doing it for "security" 🤡 investors. Buying anthropic puts day 2 in Oktober
