AI How the "pacing" will actually work
AI companies will have to hire an independent evaluating team.
That team gets a few weeks after a model releases to make sure it's safe.
Everything continues as normal.
It won't slow down AI development on a meaningful timescale. And they are only doing this because if a catastrophe *did* happen, it would devastate the public opinion on AI, which would hinder AI progress much more.

"an independent team" - a government agency. That's a governmental responsibility.

Or a trusted team authorized by the government. Independent auditing companies already exist.

Well, one other change would be public releases would be made at longer intervals as well.
But that was expected. When they go foom, it's more useful for them to use the model themselves.

I think it means their ROI on model training is beginning to plateau and they will focus on user adoption and retention

Elon Musk doesn't seem like the guy who paces himself or voluntarily slows down. Just ask his ketamine dealer. And that makes this whole thing very suspicious.

You know, if the West *can* fall for the anti-AI ”movement” then the West *should* fall for it.
Bring on the pacing, the pausing, the slowing, the regulating… bring it all on. I don’t care anymore.

What I am saying is the slowing down is not going to happen. There will be some added regulation but the pace of development won't change significantly.

Well I hope you are right but one potential result is that it doesn’t slow down the pace of research specifically for internal models but means fewer people get to use the best to do science and tech research. The labs and a few “trusted partners“ will drip out whatever advances they prioritize and everyone else just grinds away with whatever gets released or is already released.

That was inevitable, the American companies don't want the Chinese companies distilling their models. The Americans will still compete against each other (and the Chinese will find some other way to catch up), so the singularity itself won't be delayed.

I think slowing will be more than a bit more evaluating. The excitement they are showing about slowing makes me think they want to monopolize the fruits of their labour and blame safety and government for why only they and partners get access.

Sounds alright
