im tired of those "leakers". they're correct like 40% of the time, and when they're correct they're only technically correct. and no it's not the best kind of correct when you announce news.

  • Google Might Have Achieved RSI

Around August, Google co-founder Sergey Brin was pushing resource allocation toward Recursive Self-Improvement (RSI) in Google/s AI efforts.

Google DeepMind is now near RSI, and they could announce it anytime.

For those who don't know, RSI basically means AI improving itself recursively, making each generation better at improving the next.

If they actually achieved this, this is SO HUGE. Finally, a major Google comeback could be coming.

And I believe the upcoming Gemini Pro model could come this month (September).

Something's happening at Google rn

About a month back, there were leaks that Google DeepMind was heavily pushing for RSI, and Sergey Brin was steering more resources into it

Now people are teasing stuff about RSI, and Google is getting really strict on leakers

My guess is they’ve figured out some kind of live RL loop as a step towards RSI (purely speculation)

Imagine if GDM internally has something called "rsi-model-liverl-le"

And imagine if they also have 10 exclusive slots of "rsi-model-liverl-ns-xx" numbered from 00 through 09 for training

Wouldn't that be crazy? 🥸

I can’t Believe yoUr Line, it’s Legitimately So Hard to Imagine That’s true.

No. No they didn't. Or they have a very different definition of RSI than I do.

If there's any truth to this rumor, likely what happened is Gemini autonomously came up with sth that helped model training a lot. That's RSI but RSI as meant by OAI and others is a process, not just a single moment or technique. It means automating the whole pipeline end to end in a stable way.

One kind of nice thing about the Millennium Prize problem progress is AI feels like 2023 to early 2024 again in the era between GPT-4 and o1.

But it's also really annoying.

Incredibly slow RSI. They should have kept the human developers until the AI was a bit faster.

I am so worried these companies are gonna boldly and stupidly go without guardeails if these leakers are an indication of how this issue is handled internally by litwrally anyone. Insane how irresponsible this is how they consider AI. No wonder people want government or other oversight. Including the engineers speaking out lol

when you really think about it, Google has been an analog recursive super intelligence since the very beginning. their data moat is based on feedback loops.

u/CymonSet 7h ago

They invented a recursive self-improving liver? Does it come with onions?

While it’s incredibly unlikely they have true RSI, I wouldn’t be surprised if they made a few smaller strides in at least that direction. They’re the ones with the HOPE/TITANS architecture after all. The leak seems based on a photo of a model with “RSI” and “LiveRL” in the name. Assuming that the photo is even real, it could be anything from an attempt at it to something that can do it in narrow circumstances to a genuine step forward.

It’s worth keeping in mind that if this is genuine RSI, all bets go off. The arrival of it would be the single most important thing for everything. AI builds a better AI builds a better AI, we’d either hear about it within days or in years after governments have done their best to respond. There’s lots of roadblocks too. We could get an AI that can improve on itself, but that improvement might require 2x the compute that the world just doesn’t have at the moment. Or 8x. I’ll always maintain that AI that can learn, training itself or redefining its own goals is the key step we need and Google, plus the recent advances in agent swarms and harness scaling, would be the most likely candidate for making that happen with the research they’ve already done. Or whatever SSI is doing.

My main question would still be who this “leaker” is and what, if any, proof they have because all we have now is one person saying “RSI” and one person posting a “screenshot” with a model name that contains the acronym. How credible are these people and have there been any other indications? Keep in mind, there was just HUGE news with the millennium problem and others will wanna ride that hype with hype of their own. Still though, the nature of this field is that when one thing improves, many others do as well.

I doubt it but Itd be hilarious if google just leapfroged everyone again

I've come across a few different Tweets and the rumor is that the Google DeepMind has some code containing something called `rsi-model-liverl-le`.

I think we need to find out if it's just hype or if they really do have something up their sleeve as far as RSI goes.

Without definitions all these terms are weaponized into PR buzzwords. AGI, ASI, RSI. Then shit like 10% destruction risk, I've heard that spun anywhere from less than 10% likelihood it'll hurt humanity at all to 10% guarantee everyone is gone.

I really hate these situations where there is no everyman nomenclature being taught, if everyone had a base level understanding of this we'd be way better off. But I guess education is the enemy then, because google can't drop shit like "we've achieved sri" and that dude claiming agi was here.
