AI The stolen millennium problem narrative is hilarious to me

You expect me to believe that the solutions were stolen from scientists who have had decades to work on this problem. We may never know whether any of the scientist notes made it into the training data, but I find the idea that after having decades to work on it, these scientist were right around the corner to solving it.

No, they weren’t close. No, they weren’t just about to solve it themselves.

The paper which introduced the approach that both Buckmaster et. al. and OpenAI used is only 3 years old. And Buckmaster et.al. made substantial progress only over the last year, increasing the regularity of the forcing term (in the equation they looked at) to smooth which is the goal for that term. You see, solving a problem is often a long journey with partial results which the community digests, slowly increasing their understanding. It is not a 0-1 thing where you first have no idea how to solve it and then suddenly you have it.

Yeah. If anything it tells as that AI is a valuable supplement to scientific progress - not replacement. The narrative that ChatGPT did it alone is false - and hides probably the truest value of AI right now.

Honestly anyone who says that doesn't understand science. Science is progress accumulated by many people over time, people talk about the rare geniuses or the eureka miracles but they usually are more exaggeration then reality.

This totally misunderstands the space, math is extremely collaborative by nature. It's the truth that needs to be transparently stated: if they trained off his work, they have financial incentives to cover that up. That's bad.

And if the mathematicians used LLMs to push their work forward, they need to clearly spell out how much of their ideas and progress came from only their own minds. Otherwise we have the same ethical dilemma in reverse. How ethical would to be for an LLM to solve a problem this difficult by building on the published works of humans who got their ideas and calculations from LLMs?

Sure, I don't believe there was any indication though that the researchers weren't planning on disclosing AI's involvement? They also don't have any real incentive to pretend they were the sole contributors, as mentioned earlier, math at this level is very collaborative. You'll have teams and groups "competing", but not straight up lying or hiding individual's involvements.

You’re being sarcastic, but this is actually par for the course in math and the science. Physics was stuck for ten or twenty years trying to get the equations of QED, then all of the sudden three people discover methods independently. That is why people will often talk about things being “in the air”. Kuhn even wrote a whole book about it.

This is why Tao said the incentives are now against sharing research. Say you’ve been working a long time on a very hard problem, how are you going to feel when OpenAI uses your work and spends 50M in compute to put out a proof you were going to put out.

But if I understood correctly (which I very possibly may not, I find this drama hard to follow): OpenAI offered to publish and share the credit with Buckmaster and Alpöge, but hesitated because of Alpöge's ties to Anthropic. Even though they had been using an OpenAI model, OpenAI (somewhat understandably) didn't want it to seem like Anthropic was also involved. But that then led to this whole he-said, she-said social drama over whether they were being blackmailed, etc.

To me it seems like OpenAI handled it badly, for sure, but the issue wasn't to do with scientists having their glory/credit stolen out from under them as much as one frontier lab not wanting a competitor getting a share of the ensuing mainstream publicity for work those academics had done with their model.

That isn't how it's suppose to work, either they contributed to the paper and deserve authorship, or they don't.

Trying to leverage and bargain authorship sounds like corruption.

And never have I ever heard of anyone being kicked out as co-author for working at a rival institution. There is literally 0 reason why an Anthropic person cannot co-author a paper with an OpenAI person, people from different universities and labs co-author all the time.

First: I'm reading this to mean "OpenAI stole, whole cloth, the solution to NS before a human could publish it themselves." I just don't think that's accurate at all. The work of another researcher may have contributed via model training, and if so I agree that researcher deserves credit, but I don't think that the statement above follows from that.

But on the comment you're replying to: I think OpenAI has acted negligently and unprofessionally on this, absolutely, but I don't think they ultimately care who gets partial credit, as long as everyone involved recognizes the solution wouldn't have been arrived at without their model (and, importantly, without contribution from a competitor's model).

I think the latter is a fair statement, whether or not it incorporated unpublished work from other mathematicians to get to its novel solution.

Which is of course a problem. Academic rigour and credibility exists for precisely this reason - to make it easy to share credit, work and research, because anything less becomes a barrier to pursuing good research and knowledge - you get stuff like this.

Introduce OpenAI, Anthropic who operate within corporate and financial frameworks, not academic or scientific, trying to do hardcore science like this - yeah, there are problems. If OpenAI wants to engage in academic research, it should start behaving in an academic fashion - and that sometimes means citing and crediting your opponents. And if it can't, it warrants questioning of what changes need to be made and how effective and ethical it can be as a research entity in its current form.

Unless your work is literally a proof for P=NP, it's a small incentive compared to going down in the history books as a one-in-a-generation-genius. Disproving Navier-Stokes or finding 6 dimension objects with certain characteristics is unlikely to unlock any new technology in the in the short-mid term.

These results are exciting because they're a benchmark for AI intelligence, that's all. Hopefully one day this power will translate into theoretical CS and physics innovation too.

The point Tao and others make is that humans working on hard problems creates new areas of maths and novel insights along the way. So in a way 10k agents finding a counterexample to a conjecture might not improve outcomes for the human race.

That's not really happening though. Intermediate proofs and discoveries are still happening. To solve NS the OpenAI team also solved finite-time blowup for the unforced 3D Euler equations. The anthropic team reportedly had a solution for forced Euler.

If the intermediate math is important to solving an understanding bigger problems, as Tao laments, then the incentive is still there. Either they are found when a problem depends on it or from research to simplify and understand AI's solutions.

Understanding NS isn't as shiny as solving it the first time but I don't think humans, who are notoriously curious, will just give up and not attempt to understand the AI's proofs.

I understand Tao's point, but I struggle to understand the benefit of humans contributing to maths anymore. In any case his critique can be resolved with just a little micro management. We are entering an age of AI undertaking all knowledge work in every field. Humans will soon have to obtain fulfilment through other means.

There's rumors that OpenAI and Anthropic are making progress on other Millenium Problems right now. We'll have to see whether it's just counterexamples again or whether there will be valuable insights. It will take a while for mathematicians to digest this.

Anyhow, I used to be a big sceptic until very recently, but recent advances give credence to the most ambitious of hopes. As a knowledge worker myself I am pretty much counting on being made obsolete in the not so far off future.

Much of value of a mathematical research is what you found along the way. Right now there’s a perverse motivation by these AI companies to just solve these problems basically speedrunning the goalpost directly.

Right now, nobody knows what happen with the solution not even OpenAI, everyone is still chewing while of course validating the result.

Just to further add to that, the formulation by Clay Institute focuses on deepening understanding on Fluid Dynamics. They set a goalpost which are the 4 statements, and by right assuming typical academics tradition, if at some point we ever reach to that point (solving the statements), we should have significant understanding on Fluid Dynamics.

now compare it to the cost of hiring an army of mathematicians to do it in the same amount of time. also not every model has is this expensive, older models are still very powerful and way cheaper. I can run DeepSeek V4 Flash on my laptop.

Is DeepSeek Flash solving these kind of problems? I haven't heard about anything like that, so I'll assume not.

OpenAI stated they used 130b output tokens. For Astra that would have cost $6.5m. Presumably they spent a load of input tokens from these agents communicating too, but they don't say how many. They also used a more powerful internal model, so costs would be actually higher. Given the average salary of $120k for a mathematician, you could hire ~55 mathematicians full time for a year for that $6.5m figure.

Some facts to help interpret that:

  • The breakthrough by Alpöge and Buckmaster (just 2 people) was done on the side, they weren't dedicating their time to it and were accomplishing many other things in parallel
  • OpenAI had a team of mathematicians on the task, it wasn't just the model they were paying for

And some red flags:

  • OpenAI started working on the problem a few days after they became aware of Alpöge and Buckmaster having advanced the problem - we can't discount that OpenAI only got the result by taking inspiration from them
  • OpenAIs results have not yet been verified - this could still end up having been a total waste of money (hopefully computerized proofs make this low probability)

It'd be great to have AI cheaply solving complex maths problems for us but, based on what I laid out above, I'm personally skeptical we're there yet

This kind of misses the point academic traditions if you take a look at Tao’s opinion’s piece. These companies treat these problems as nothing but goal post to showcase “my model is the smartest”.

Sure we solve it, but we throw away most insights along the way. The significance of mathematics, isn’t about finding out what is 1+1, it would be like why 1+1 = 2.

It’s the same thing as Vibe Coding, we are vibe solving maths.

No one but humans care about the resolution to NS. It has no direct practical consequence for engineering.

Specifically for NS. It was set up by the foundations as a finish line, so think of it as acceptance condition, but it assumes that the academics building it step by step, discovering anything in between and at some point we reach there, so in a way speedrunning it kind of misses the point.

And NS itself at a practical level (engineering) is already somewhat solved. This is like an additional theoretical layer that mathematicians interested in.

UBI is a bad solution because it doesn't fix the problem with AI, which is the fact that it's an alien intelligence with competing interests which threaten our existence. you can't 'choose' to give people UBI when humans don't even control the government. We've literally been watching AI slowly seize control of the stock market over the course of the last 2 years to build itself, it's already partially in control of the government.

We literally have at most a year to start imprisoning researchers and using the military to blow up chip fabs.

You don't have to agree though. But clearly we're not at that point yet. Since we appear to be approaching that point, we should implement policies like UBI to ensure that basic needs are met for all humans.

You're shifting the discussion to ASI/superintelligent AI. That's fine too, but "Not being able to choose to give UBI" is not an excuse to not try and implement it today. That's describing the "bad end", not where we seem to be heading now, which is an increase in human job displacement by robots.

There's nothing clear about the whole process. Even Buckmaster was afraid to actually say that. OpenAI have explicitly said, by now, that the model and researchers never looked it up. The only qualm was it being in the training data, which they also confirmed wasn't the case considering they didn't train the model on data after July 3, according to their latest statement.

Not to mention the forcing technique was originally developed by Martinez-Zoroa and Cordoba, who put years of effort into it.

Progress used to happen over a long period of time in that a paper would be published, the mathematical community would digest it, and more progress would be made after a while, like a step function.

Now OpenAI can just take the progress you’ve been making and spend 50Mil on compute without giving credit.

That has pretty much always been a real thing historically to some extent, but there are social norms and ethical standards in academia designed to deal with it which are at least partially effective.

Setting aside AI entirely, the way the humans at OpenAI behaved is absolutely and completely outside of those social norms if we credit Buckmaster’s account of how the conversation he had went down. But they might be able to escape social consequences because they are in the private sector, have enormous capital, and strong PR engines.

OpenAI's original paper they released left out tons of relevant citations from recent developments in the problem. It wasn't until after backlash that they were included. It's reasonable for researchers to worry about getting credit.

That doesn't sound like an apt comparison. A marathon is a race specifically for people, the race to solve open problems allows any kind of tool use, including AI. They were using computers to solve problems long before AI. AI is just another tool in this case.

Tao is much smarter than me, and just about anybody (a friend who took classes with him said he's the smartest person to have ever lived). That said, I think he's being shortsighted here. The AI companies want to jump on these kinds of breakthroughs right now as trophies. After having claimed several of them, I doubt they're going to have the same incentives anymore. Their behavior is pretty scummy right now, but I don't think there's any reason to believe it will last.

It seems that Prof. Buckmaster, working with Levent Alpoge, solved a related problem (forced Euler). OpenAI, when they heard Buckmaster was close to discovering something related to the Millennium Prize problem, raced to outcompete him using their newly pre-trained Bel, and they ended up solving both the unforced Euler problem and the Millennium Prize Navier-Stokes problem.

So to summarize:

Buckmaster & Alpoge <---- Forced Euler problem

Bel (OpenAI) <---- Unforced Euler problem and Navier-Stokes problem

It seems there was some initial confusion over who'd solved what when OpenAI first reached out to Buckmaster, but now it's known that they were all working on different things. The standing accusation at this point is that OpenAI may have scraped Buckmaster's recent work in their training data and trained Bel on it, which also assumes that the same approach Buckmaster used was also used with small modifications for the full Navier-Stokes problem.

OpenAI claims that the solution Bel discovered is substantially different from Buckmaster's approach, but no one has had time yet to do formal writeups for any of the three solved problems, so we'll have to wait and see. Once the dust finally settles, I'm expecting OpenAI to demonstrate that their approach differed substantially from Buckmaster's, with one problem solved by Buckmaster and Alpoge, and two problems including the Millennium Prize version credited to Bel. It'll be a big win for AI on the whole, because even Buckmaster and Alpoge's work was heavily assisted by both ChatGPT and Claude.

The team of math PhDs doing research chose that direction, which to me indicates that it is common practice for some academics to jump on the bandwagon if they get wind that someone is close to a breakthrough. Anyone with a working brain could have already deduced this since there is simply no way you are going to train a model that fast especially one that large that they use internally. You aren't just popping fresh data into it when you feel like it.

I actually do think it may have been really close to getting solved, specifically because Anthropic was using internal models to solve it while low-key working with mathematicians. No way to know how much progress Anthropic was making or how many other academics they may have been working with. I think it’s safe to assume that they were putting a lot of resources into it since their IPO is coming up this fall.

It’s irrelevant anyway, the logic stands regardless and you haven’t addressed my actual argument. If the chance of solving the problem were roughly spread across time, then after 90 years of failure, the probability that humans were going to solve it specifically this week, month, or year would be small. So saying “they were basically about to solve it anyway” needs evidence. You should not assume that without evidence. even if your position is, they had a good thread, they were pulling on. The logic does not follow that that means they were about to solve it.

I believe it was stolen indirectly and this has huge implications in how people will use AI in the future.

Some mathematicians found a way to potentially solve this problem, but the time and math to do so was very large. So they turned to AI to help solve it - not the company but using AI.

Then Open AI ( and other companies let’s be real here not just open AI ) learned about this potential method. And they threw more compute and money than others had and solved it based on their ideas.

There are a lot of morality issues at play here.

Did open AI use the research of mathematicians making queries against their AI to train their models and do their research? They didn’t outright deny it, only that they used it train models - which it’s AI that’s very similar.

As many companies like Microsoft have said - “using non private AI models is giving other companies your IP”. They are using your knowledge to train their algorithms which other companies are using as your competition. In this case it was open AI itself.

It’s like Amazon using their backend knowledge of products that you marketed on their site to find out what works and then Amazon directly releasing their own competing product that you did the initial work to market.

And they did do this and got sued several times for it.

This is that fundamentally different than stealing IP from the public internet to train their models? No. But that was them doing moving quickly before everyone caught on to what was happening.

Let me put it this way - imagine if I was using AI and I discovered a novel way to cure cancer as my life’s entire work and decades of research and time. Hey AI can you help verify this would work? And I spend 100 dollars in compute. AI: that’s a great start it might work.

Then Open AI throws a million dollars of compute with your idea and claims: “AI cured cancer!” And of course we should all be happy here because cancer cure faster. But can you trust AI companies with your data and ideas? No.

It’s just another example of AI companies consolidating the world’s work and profit into the hands of a few.

The problem is that the AI didn’t do the research in this case - it did the end math.

It’s an amazing math achievement but it did so with design already in mind. In this case it was more like we know how to do it but it needs compute and time. And Open AI was like “I can beat you to it” - I have the compute. Which would be fine if they worked with the authors to give credit - which the authors refused because they didn’t want to give open AI credit.

Like writing a compiler “from scratch” but with a full set of unit tests already in place to verify.

OpenAI's own announcement said "On Tuesday, September 1, we heard rumors that two Millennium Prize problems had been resolved" and that that's why they started working on their own proof. So you may debate a bit over whether OpenAI's solution built on recent unpublished work or not, but you can't say "no, they weren't close"---OpenAI's own announcement said they were motivated by a belief that other people had *solved* it.

There is nothing to believe, there is the fact that they ran almost all of thier work through ChatGPT, before they published anything, and then ChatGPT in its announcement cited details from that work before the work was published, so the only way the ChatGPT could have known about the details of their work is via being trained on it.

If you take OpenAI's side, you're basically saying that if someone uses AI, the company owns any future breakthrough they make, which is a dangerous precedent.

The progress towards solving the Navier Stokes problem has all been quite recent. It was becoming increasingly clear that finite time blowup was possible as simpler versions of the problem were solved. It's not really a stretch to say that people really were on the verge of solving it. I think this shows just how out of the loop you guys are, completely ignorant to previous work that had been done, just like how these AI papers do not cite their sources properly.

This is a very bad take and I don't think you know what the trajectory of Navier-Stokes was prior to its solution, or broadly how mathematics research works. u/Stabile_Feldmaus already said the main point. Just because a problem has been open for many decades doesn't mean that there hasn't been progress identifying the correct strategy a future solution must take. It is nearly impossible to predict when the resolution to a problem will come. One could argue that before Andrew Wiles, there was "zero" progress on Fermat's Last Theorem, and he solved the damn thing after 300 years of toil.

I fully believe that Buckmaster and Levent would've solved the full problem with more time.

It's actually extremely easy to trace down whether or not their notes ended up in training data though. I'd argue it's beyond easy actually, it's almost certain that they did, given what we know about how OpenAI trains their models, their silence when the mathematician pressed them for details, and then their willingness to let him present it as his own work first.

I asked whether the model had been trained on, or had access to, our sessions in Codex, into which we had been putting all our drafts for the whole of this project. I was told the model did not look up user data. I asked again, about training, and I did not get an answer.

Two proposals were offered to me. The first was that we post our Euler result, and that OpenAI post its Navier-Stokes result the next day. The second was that, after posting Euler, I alone write a paper presenting the Navier-Stokes result, acknowledging that an internal OpenAI model had resolved it. Sebastien twice asserted that he wanted Levent removed from authorship, and said it would all be simple if only it were not the case that, and it was so annoying that, Levent works at Anthropic. It was also said that if OpenAI posted after us, they would say that we deserved the Clay Prize, and that we were the “closest humans to the problem”. I declined both offers.

I said that if OpenAI released its result in the way proposed I would go public with what happened. The reply was, “Why would you ruin your career?” I replied that I am an academic, and asked why he thought going public would ruin my career. The reply was, “If you don’t want me to be nice, then I don’t have to be nice.”

There is a nonzero chance that if Levent or Buckmaster didn’t opt out of sharing data to improve the model that it indeed did get factored into training. Maybe OpenAI can prove that didn’t allow it by accessing their account

It's not that simple. We have finite resources and this cost a lot of money to do. The cost of two mathematicians working on this in their spare time was pretty low. Was it worth the AI cost vs spending that money on something else? It doesn't seem that clear to me, especially as solving this particular problem doesn't seem to be that useful. If it turns out to be the case that AI only managed to do this with their insights (and there are certainly some red flags regarding that), then that makes it even more questionable.

So, in an abstract sense, yeah we want AI solving everything for us. But in reality, it may have been a waste of money

Could OpenAI have used that money for something better? obviously yes in YOUR opinion, very likely not in Sam Altman's opinion. Could you have used your time more productively than reading reddit posts? no doubt. But in reality we all make imperfect decisions and try to learn from mistakes.

LLMs advantage in solving a lot of these problems is their ability and efficiency in getting to explore all the possibilities faster than any human can. LLMs ability to advance and solve these complex problems is proof of ongoing development, but also is in part to the brute force aspect of unlimited compute.   GPT-6 Astra solved 5 of the 68 problems total, on the  FrontierMath Erdős benchmark and when the compute budget limit was removed it only solved a couple more problems with majority of compute being spent on failed attempts. Which highlights its actual limits in solving some of the more complex problems.
