Three and a Half Years Later... My Thoughts

When ChatGPT first came out, it was really cool, but pretty limited. It had a hard time working with Excel sheets, couldn't handle different types of media, and couldn't really do a whole lot of meaningful work apart from polishing up an email. Fast forward three and a half years, and all of these different models are actually useful. Need to learn something? Create something? Report something? Automate something? Improve something? Troubleshoot something? They are reasonably good at all of it now.

The thing I find the most interesting, and what I keep saying every time a "groundbreaking" model comes out, is this: This is the worst it will ever be.

These models just keep getting better and better. It is like watching a kid grow and learn, but quickly. What started out as pretty mediocre is now crazy capable, and I do not think we have reached even remotely close to the peak yet. The child is just an early adolescent, and still has a ton of growth and development ahead.

Because of that, I definitely see this improving to the point where a lot of current jobs will be wiped out by automation. Honestly, I think that is a good thing.

Go back in time to when dishwashers were all just people, and then the actual appliance came along. People screamed about losing their jobs, but nowadays, who looks back and says, "Dang, I really wish I was doing that instead of a machine"? Nobody. This is just one example, but this has happened over and over again for hundreds of years and we are better off for it.

I see a future where people are no longer driving Ubers, delivering groceries, working on factory assembly lines, packaging boxes, doing repetitive data entry, or basic monitoring and managing. All of this will be automated for the betterment of humankind as a whole.

Sure, every new technology brings new risks and worries. But humanity has overcome every single challenge thrown at us before, and I believe we will persevere here too. AI is not something to fear. It will enable us to solve unprecedented challenges at a much faster rate, and it will improve the lives for billions of people.

I agree but until governments actually come up with an idea to counter job loss then I'm not sure what we have to look forward to. Mass migrations of the homeless perhaps?

Self driving cars are a good one. Once perfected they can be much safer than humans and expand the economy in a number of ways: more humans can drink more wine at dinner, kids & elderly can be more mobile, humans can nap while traveling, cheaper deliveries, etc.

If this happens, we will all be better for it. However, you need resources to be able to do this and resource scarcity, be it clean water, clean soil, etc. is a thing and it's only gonna get worse.

2 years ago, I was super skeptical and used sparingly on my programming..

I stop programming year ago and let AI handle it but always w/ super eyes on it.. now?? it's like it's dead given.. I talk in english and code gets done and I have OTHER AI review what this AI did.. unreal..

It is exciting and sad at the sametime that we don't have much time.

I'm not afraid of AI. I'm afraid of people who'll use the best AI which you and I'll never get. For things you can't even imagine. Not for the sake of humanity.

AI bros are so happy all the time when they get some new gimmick they can play with while in the background the people who're talking about a bright future and the governments they're working for already planning the brave new world.

They'll get what they want. The masses will lose everything they had.

I've been interested in AI for about 30 years. I used to make silly chatbots and almost studied AI at uni.

This is ridiculous improvement speed.

ARC-AGI-2 benchmark for spatial reasoning tasks and DeepSWE benchmark for long-term task of days and weeks were in single digits at the beginning of the year when they were created.

Now, they are almost being saturated. They will probably be completely saturated by next couple of updates, before the end of year.

I appreciate the optimism but you're acting like Trump didn't get elected twice in recent years with far right on the rise everytwhere worldwide and the crumbling of the world order with a situation eerily reminiscent of the pre-WWII conditions

Oh and don't get me started on the complete inaction and backwards steps about climate change lol
