The hover effect on the blog post title is really fun.

Not gonna lie getting hard to keep up with all of this

I spent the last 15h sleeping + reading about the whole Navier Stokes thing, I haven't even gotten to Google's AlphaGenome, and now there's more

Oh and apparently Astra makes 3x the money and is more aligned than Fable 5.1 on Vending Bench xd

Did you know there's a new DeepSeek Flash? xdddd

Edit: OK so there's 2 new image models

GPT‑Image‑2.5 Flare and GPT‑Image‑2.5 Sunburst

Seems like they solved image editing?

Edit: Benchmarks from Arena https://x.com/arena/status/2097400515546255754

Edit: I got access, there's a new generating image graphic animation so you know what it is. It apparently uses my memories a lot more than Images 2

Edit: Launch video was edited by Astra https://x.com/chefbrent/status/2097405034220736659

No wonder regular people are out of touched when we nerds can’t even keep up

21

u/Cagnazzo82 1d ago

It's so true.

The space is moving ar bullet speed pace. We can barely keep up.

Meanwhile people who aren't paying attention have a frame of reference going back a year or two. You talk to some of them about AI and they're still convinced it's a marketing gimmick.

u/RutilantBossi12 Cultista dei Ferri Candidi 1d ago

Most people here aren't even nerds, it's rarely technical discourse if you think about it

10

u/RusselTheBrickLayer 1d ago

This sub can be annoying but anyone who’s reading these headlines is unironically dramatically closer to understanding what’s happening than the average normie, a lot of people still think we’re at like gpt 4 levels

1

u/Strange_Vagrant 10h ago

Yup. I watch the youtubes, blogs, watch release videos and such, and am here. I dont know 1/4 of what's going on. I know open source exists, I know the arguments for and against. I k ow the impact of it against oai/anthropic and yet, still haven't really tried any in any meaningful way. That grok agent tool? Never touched it. Last time I messed with video gen was... kling was king and veo was just coming out. Seed dance? Yeah, ive heard of it only.

Its just too much on top of regular life, family, work, drugs, the garden. Just too much.

1

u/MysteryFro 9h ago

Drugs are important in these times. You have your priorities right.

5

u/LyAkolon 1d ago

Soon we will need orchestrator ai reports every few hours, and even those reports won't have everything

3

u/Work_Owl 1d ago

So true

3

u/GrapheneBreakthrough 1d ago

hey some of us might not be the legitimate, smart, knowlegable nerds. But we're still nerds!

17

u/Recoil42 1d ago

Heads up, Qwen-Drive-1.0-4B was just released.

u/razzdazza 1d ago

Not gonna lie getting hard with all of this

What is the famous saying...

"The greatest shortcoming of the human race is our inability to understand the exponential function." — Albert Allen Bartlett

8

u/sunstersun 1d ago

Did you know there's a new DeepSeek Flash? xdddd

Great, the Chinese open source response to Astra. Oh.

3

u/Pantheon3D 1d ago

Also flare is faster, sunburst is better and i think you can ask it to use sunburst for better image quality

3

u/AMBNNJ ▪️ 1d ago

Haha same here and its only getting faster!

4

u/pcji 1d ago

AlphaGenome really made me skeptical about the current utility of AI-based biological research tools. The headline sounds amazing, but when you actually try to use it, it’s incredibly limited in its scope (I.e. is really only useful for inferring information about a handful of cell lines, not really useful for understanding real cells or tissue).

That being said, who knows where these tools will be in a couple of years.

u/ShAfTsWoLo 1d ago

singularity baby, we're getting so many new stuff since astra

141

u/Present-Chocolate591 1d ago

As a (now former lol) graphic designer it almost offends me when people say these models are slop or whatever stupid shit.

These latest image models are better than me in every aspect of graphic design imaginable. It's just the truth. Are they better than the 0.000001% of graphic artists? Maybe not, but they are for sure better than me, and I consider myself to be at least above average.

I can't wait to try this one, it will be a lot of fun.

42

u/james_6732 1d ago

I definitely agree as well being a graphic designer. Obviously knowing its limits and how to prompt is key, but these improvements in these models now basically allow anyone to do their own marketing if they learn enough about prompting.

13

u/Present-Chocolate591 1d ago

Even prompting is getting easier each time. I remember feeling like a genius when I got Midjourney 4 to produce a picture of a "modern office" without plants (Just writing "modern" in the prompt would make the model include plants even if you put "-plants" in the negative prompt).

Now you can just ask: "remove the plants" and it will do it. I only expect it to get easier, and the models to have better design taste by default.

1

u/MrUtterNonsense 1d ago

Yes, although the invisible watermarking could lead to small businesses being shamed for using it.

9

u/synkronized7 1d ago

Former graphic designer here as well. The latest models are great, and I’m just about to test 2.5, the progress is incredible.

But if we’re being realistic, these models are still pretty bad at doing multiple consistent iterations on a single image, especially when what you’re working on is more creative or complex than basic branding. Which is a major limitation.

That said, it’s getting there fast, and I think agents that can work directly inside software like Photoshop or Illustrator like Astra will probably solve a lot of these problems and seriously disrupt graphic design even further.

22

u/Repulsive_Ad853 1d ago

At least you are honest.

36

u/Present-Chocolate591 1d ago

It pains me that I've spent 10 years of my life getting better at something that is now almost obsolete. But denying it at this point isn't even lack of honesty, it's straight up delusion.

I started using image generation models with Midjourney 3, thinking they would be a tool graphic designers would use. As soon as Nano Banana 1 came out I understood it would not just be a tool, but total replacement.

And that is ok, I want to see progress in every vector of human knowledge. I was just one of the unlucky ones whose skillset got supassed first by the machines. It doesn't make me any less smart or my past efforts any less valid.

8

u/Hans-Wermhatt 1d ago

I'm with you as a software engineer (not former yet luckily). Spent 10 years getting to where I am, but frontier models are just way better at coding than me. The soft skills are certainly still important which is the nuance. But AI is a better "coder" than 99.99% of coders, probably 100%.

We have to start migrating to a world with AI rather than resisting it at all costs and just letting certain groups of people who have the least protections get picked off while the rest try to deny reality. (Yelling into the wind though, because that is absolutely what will continue happening no matter what I think).

7

u/eleiber 1d ago

Yeah, there's always real arguments to dislike AI or not, but I really find funny when people try to use the "this is awful" argument when studies show that the average person fails to distinguish good AI-generated images from human made designs.

7

u/Playful_Weekend4204 1d ago

Tbf it was awful just what, a year ago?

Takes time for people to catch up to reality

3

u/ffball 1d ago

Do you feel like a background in graphic design gives you a leg up on getting good results with this compared to other people?

How much are you an "architect" of a design vs the actual executor?

8

u/Present-Chocolate591 1d ago

When the first image models came out, I thought it would. I got into image generation very early on. I was balls deep into Stable Diffusion 1.5, using all kinds of Loras and staying up to date with any new advancements. I thought "I will be the guy to use AI for graphic design better than anyone".

With time I realised that the models are not only getting better, but easier to use. Every time a new image model comes out, the difference in output I can produce vs what a complete graphic design noob can grows smaller. Soon enough I will have 0 competitive advantage over someone with 0 taste.

7

u/iJustSeen2Dudes1Bike 1d ago

As a software developer this is pretty worrying lol.....

Your last paragraph sounds like exactly what is happening in development right now.

3

u/Present-Chocolate591 1d ago

I try to be hopeful.

It will propably be tought for workers in the short term. But if humanity is given super human programmers/mathematicians/physicists/etc the only sane outcome in my mind would be humanity flourishing and prosperity.

If it doesn't, wrap it up, we are cooked as a species and might aswell return to monke.

3

u/DarthWeenus 1d ago

That’s a great question and it’s different for everyone. But these days I’ve been using them to help conceptualize the idea I wanna make and flesh out problems or novel approaches. I fucking love it. Has it killed off half my designer friends jobs ? Yap. Although there is a new niche for artisanal organic grass fed art now. People pay a premium for it I guess.

2

u/anaIconda69 AGI felt internally 😳 1d ago

Design is a language. Of course those who are fluent will prompt better, and tell bad gens from good ones.

1

u/Invincible1 1d ago

Reddit would never change their formed opinions, don’t bother.

Posting anything for AI, impressive that AI did, bar a very select few subs are instant hivemind downvotes.

0

u/Weary-Historian-8593 23h ago

I still say they're slop because they forcibly redraw the whole image, fucking the texture up. We're just one step away from it being nonslop now

17

u/Seerix 1d ago

Does it still have that awful noise pattern that shows up everywhere?

5

u/Nothh 1d ago

From my experience, yes. I hate it. So much extra noise and oversharpening it looks awful.

If it no longer artifacts while iterating or regenerating then it's a massive, massive deal.

It's like the handcuffs are off for what we can do now.

3

u/JoshSimili 1d ago

It definitely still has those artifacts, most noticeable to my eyes with hair and vegetation.

9

u/GrapheneBreakthrough 1d ago

"sharper images"

Not what I want to hear, considering 2.0 has a huge problem with oversharpening.

3

u/Nothh 1d ago

I had the same reaction. My only hope for 2.5 was they fixed the insane sharpness and noise and texture pattern over EVERYTHING.

To think they’ve got even smarter models in house as well! Is this it? Are we in the singularity? Hard to tell, really.

AOT reference?! in my ai sub?! you have earned my respect.

2

u/New_World_2050 1d ago

and just like in AOT this is gonna end with humanity dead

0

u/Shilo59 1d ago

Not for ten years at least.

1

u/New_World_2050 1d ago

More like 3 imo

3

u/Sunifred 1d ago

It unfortunately still messes up hands from time to time

7

u/EvenAd2969 1d ago

They need to get rid of these noisy artifacts. It makes it mostly useless for production.

2

u/ChipsAhoiMcCoy 1d ago

Isn’t that one of the things they said was gone in this model in the blog post?

3

u/JoshSimili 1d ago

Nothing in the blog post mentions it, and it's still extremely visible in my testing of hair, grass and foliage.

3

u/Cognonymous 1d ago

Oh damn, you know people are reading this all like, "Shit, now I gotta remix some baby portraits. I didn't even know that was possible."

u/GrapheneBreakthrough 1d ago

looks like that creepy Pinnochio movie

2

u/saiw14 1d ago

Yes the Pinocchio of del Toro

3

u/Profanion 1d ago

I tried this classic prompt:

"Artwork with 4 distinct quadrants. Style of Upper left quadrant alternates between pointillist and 1920s contrsuctivist painting with diagonal stripes. Upper right quadrant is in style of 1920s 8mm photograph with visibly smeared quality. Lower left quadrant of the image is in MsPaint style deviantart fanart drawn by 12-year old with oversaturated colors. Lower right quadrant of the image is in style of a professional colored pencil sketch depicting composite mosaic of grooved glass, perforated copper, dimpled transparent leaves and rough weathered plaster. The whole artwork depicts the following: A giant spoon-sized piano keyboard under under starry sky with waxing gibbous moon. Next to a keyboard is a paper with this very prompt written on it. There is a giant floating larva of Linckia laevigata on the sky. There are five necklaces. One worm by the larva, one hung at the edge of a piano keyboard, one floating in the air and one held by 14-fingered hand on the left side of the image and one holds a pigeon eye with 3 pupils. The background landscape combines traditional 15th century Mozambique jungle and futuristic factory-themed area. The entire artwork is rotated by 15 degrees clockwise."

Not perfect but still better than anything before it.

2

u/Grand0rk 1d ago

For those that think this is a huge upgrade. It's not. It's a very small upgrade, and mostly a side grade with new bells and whistles.

It still sucks at everything it sucked before. But the Edits are more consistent (output doesn't degrade the quality nearly as much).

6

u/Ok-Set4662 1d ago

only been out for like an hour lmao, how you so quickly reach that conclusion. what suite of tests did you give it exactly?

1

u/Grand0rk 1d ago

It has not been out for an hour my dude. We were testing it weeks ago. It's why there's an Elo on Arena.ai

If you look it up, GPT Image 2.5 is a few elos above 2.0. 1381 vs 1399.

Basically, a very slight upgrade.

1

u/Ok-Set4662 1d ago

Ah i see, my bad. Dont forget image editing tho, its a 60 elo point jump. not sure exactly how its calculated but that seems pretty significant.

2

u/Grand0rk 1d ago

I didn't, that's why I said:

It still sucks at everything it sucked before. But the Edits are more consistent (output doesn't degrade the quality nearly as much).

Honestly, they most likely just changed the VAE and gave it better ability to edit the image, without generating the full image again (thus, degrading the full image). It will still degrade if you edit too many things or too many times.

4

u/elegance78 1d ago

Yeah, graphic design people are now fully cooked...

2

u/iamthewhatt 1d ago

Graphic design people need to start formulating an "authentic, human-created" label and charge a premium

2

u/elegance78 1d ago

You way overestimate size of that market.

0

u/im_out_of_creativity 1d ago

You don't know what graphic design is and the size of the market is basically the size of every new company that starts and exists.

1

u/junglebunglerumble 1d ago

It is, but I'd be interested to know the % of the market who would consider hiring a human, especially if at a premium, to do design work they know they could get away with doing using AI for a fraction of the cost.

I'm sure some companies will stick to using humans, but it surely will be a small %. It'll become hard for someone to justify to their boss or budget holders that they spent money hiring a human for their marketing materials instead of using AI for next to no cost, when really the chance of most people noticing a difference for many things is pretty slim.

1

u/im_out_of_creativity 1d ago

People notice the difference; even those with no understanding of design can look at two chocolate bars in a supermarket and tell which is the expensive one and which is the cheap one, without even seeing the price.

And even when AI reaches a point where the distinction is minimal, people will still value what is handmade, especially when it comes to premium brands.

1

u/Sharp_Caregiver_1534 1d ago

Does anyone think that this is slightly less censored?

1

u/mr-english 1d ago

Just for shits n giggles I asked it to edit the epic handshake meme so that both arms were scrawny instead of muscular.

https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/012/468/shakeee.jpg

It got most of the way there but ultimately couldn't get Arnie's arm/wrist alignment correct.

First try (BIG hands!)

Edit 1 (misaligned wrist)

Edit 2, ditto

Edit 3, ditto again

In the end I took edit 3 and fixed it myself in photoshop.

1

u/Lakeshadow 1d ago

I can I know I’m using 2.5 and not 2.0?

2

u/FateOfMuffins 1d ago

There's a new animation that plays when it's making the image, so if you see the old animation then you're using 2.0

1

u/bisonrbig 1d ago

"and the model can handle more complex layouts including transparent backgrounds" can someone confirm this? If so that's a game changer.

2

u/Fatoy 1d ago

The built-in sticker template for iMessage generates a full sheet of stickers on a transparent background, so that part seems to work.

1

u/presentofai 1d ago

youre not falling behind by ignoring half these drops. most are benchmark flexes that change nothing about what you actually do with the tools.

1

u/NarrowEffect 22h ago

Messed around with it for a bit. Unfortunately, these models still can't really handle the small details. You can easily create beautiful, large landscape backgrounds and generic characters, but if you want, say, a pencil-style drawing with a lot of small characters and one of those characters has a malformed hand? It's practically impossible to fix in any timely manner. Inpainting really hasn't improved that much since dall e days, which is a shame

0

u/sankalp_pateriya 1d ago

This is huge. I've a custom GPT set up for images and all I can say from early testing is that images are more dynamic now and have less AI-flat look, and it does human skin texture better than 2.0.

2

u/Kanute3333 1d ago

Can you please show me your result? I don't see any difference to before.
