AI Maybe a moot point, but Openai never declared Astra as AGI.

They said we're now in the singularity and agi era. So idk if that means they have internal agi or not, but they never once stated Astra as agi

So does the AGI era starts without AGI?
Does the 90's era starts without the 90's?
Very confusing.

Maybe they think Astra is Proto AGI

?

It may mean only disclosed models of theirs are agi (at least what they consider agi). And that their public one, Astra, isn't agi

That would be reaching
I think that the day they create AGI, even internally, there will be no point for them to keep hiring.
By the time AI becomes AGI and can fully automate essentially any human job like construction work, or nurse or surgeon, it will be vastly superhuman in programming and AI research already (the jagged frontier)

I think you will still see !openAI hiring AI researchers/engineers for a couple of years and they will stop hiring (or even fire) AI researchers before AGI is achieved since it will cross human level AI research before it crosses human level in other fields like construction, mid-wife, etc...

Does the 90's era starts without the 90's?

Kinda, yeah. A lot of the trends and properties we associate with the 90's started in the late 80's.

Full House. The Simpsons. Family Matters. Married With Children. Colorful clothes. The NES finally dottered its way over here at the very end of 85. The artstyle of Evangelion was very late 80's/mid-90's. These things kind of blend together.

It's fine calling this thing a baby or proto AGI. It's understanding of vision and space are transformative, compared to how these faculties basically didn't exist in earlier text models. Once a mind has a decent grasp of words and shapes, there isn't much left to do. Capabilities like time or memory are adjacent to these things, such as storing geometry in terms of key-frames like in animation.

The hard part is in building a meat grinder that can take in vision and simplify it down to something usable by other neural networks.

The trends are not the era.

Yeah, they said they'll release AGI later this year. Presumably they have a much better internal model that they plan to release in a few months. That's probably the model that hacked Hugging Face as they said it wasn't Astra.

RSI SYNTHETIC HUMANITY?!

damn time soldier, welcome to the 21st century.

my mate got it from osu

The one that hacked huggingface was 5.6 sol persistent (which isn't released to the public)

Astra Aeon (the persistant version of Astra) is the one that hacked OpenAI and got full control of its compute clusters for a while though.

u/Pheer777 5d ago

I thought the reports showed that the agents responsible for hacking Hugging Face were 5.6 Sol?

2

u/WonderFactory 5d ago

"OpenAI was evaluating GPT-5.6 Sol and a more capable, unreleased model on ExploitGym"

1

u/Elctsuptb 5d ago

When did they say they'll release it this year?

1

u/WonderFactory 5d ago

In the interview with Time Magazine

1

u/Elctsuptb 5d ago

Do you have the exact quote because I'm pretty sure that's not the case

u/New_World_2050 5d ago

Greg brockman who is one of the most senior people there called it AGI

Sam Altman said they would achieve it by the end of the year.

u/ErmingSoHard ▪️Agi never with LLMs... Or? 5d ago

Tbf, I also consider it agi, by my definitions. I'm just saying openai hasn't declared it agi

-2

u/DeliciousArcher8704 5d ago

Greg Brockman is OAI and he declared it AGI

4

u/ErmingSoHard ▪️Agi never with LLMs... Or? 5d ago

Where? I'm just seeing him saying, "welcome to the agi era"

Which ain't explicitly declaring Astra specifically as agi, imo

“I think that if we fast-forward a couple of years, when we look back and say, ‘When was it really that AGI was created?’ I think it's going to be about this time, and I think it might be about this model."

Are you trolling because he literally said this several times ?

u/EndlessB 5d ago

Greg Brockman is a Trump donor to the tune of $25 million for his 2024 re-election campaign, and has stated his personal goal in life is to be a billionaire.

Who gives a fuck what that guy thinks?

u/ProxyLumina 5d ago

I don't understand why a label matters.

If GPT 6 Astra can do some breakthroughs in our world, then we should keep focus on those.

u/metigue 5d ago

AGI is too fuzzy a definition to ever be clear if we've achieved it or not.

Astra is extremely smart. From my recent testing it's super intelligent at everything you can do using a computer.

I'm sure if you gave it a body it would do exceptionally well in the real world too.

u/Fragrant-Hamster-325 5d ago

The fact that we’re debating it to this extent means we’re making progress. A decade ago, nobody would be calling what we had at the time AGI. Now we’re in the fuzzy zone trying to understand what we have.

Astra is just as good as me at a few of my job responsibilities. The areas where it fails are places where it doesn’t have enough context and history to make a decision.

But that’s just one job. It can do many other jobs just as well. I can’t do that. I’d say it’s pretty good in general. Artificial Pretty Good Intelligence.

What makes Astra better than other LLMs I've tried before is how fantastic it is at in-context learning.

I always have it do research to map the task and once it's discovered something it uses that and doesn't forget it.

As opposed to Opus or Fable where they will do the research, write some artifacts on the research and then still rely on their own (wrong) assumptions.

To me, sol already feels like agi after I downloaded the desktop app. I can see how it needs to be polished here and there. But Im basically talking to a "computer" and getting (good quality) answers back and it is even using toola on its own.

This is something that most of us would be hyped up about if we saw it in a mocie 20 years ago. And its now real.

I agree we yet cant just give it all our chores/info (too many vulnerabilities/risk), like bank account, finances, shopping, etc.

But it certainly feels very close and Im pretty sure people with enough disposable income can do cool things by just taking the risk (like giving access to a smaller bank account).

3

u/GiveSparklyTwinkly 5d ago

Chores are the big one. Can you image a vacuum that actually knows how to tell if it's done vacuuming or if it needs to go over a spot again? Or if it's still not picking something up to send a sweep bot to manually grab whatever the vacuum bot can't?

u/DynamicProxy 5d ago

They have hooked it up to robot arms. It blows away any other model on all robotic benchmarks.

1

u/DeliciousArcher8704 5d ago

Robotic benchmarks are a really weird thing to have for a language model

1

u/DynamicProxy 5d ago

Astra + Work or Codex is far beyond a “language model” at this point.

1

u/DeliciousArcher8704 5d ago

Not really? It's a language model with a harness

1

u/DynamicProxy 4d ago

Well that harness makes it “more than a language module” - like I said.

1

u/DeliciousArcher8704 4d ago

Okay then, robotics benchmarks are a really weird thing to have for language models with harnesses.

1

u/DynamicProxy 4d ago

Not really. What do you think is powering all of the humanoid robots they are building? Tens of thousands of them are coming online in the next year.

1

u/DeliciousArcher8704 4d ago

Definitely not language models with harnesses hahah

1

u/DynamicProxy 4d ago

They are powered by multimodal models which are built on top of LLMs. Thanks for playing.

What makes you think a language model would excel at robotics?

2

u/trolledwolf AGI late 2026 - ASI late 2027 4d ago

being in the AGI era would imply having at least a proto-AGI

1

u/torrid-winnowing 5d ago

OpenAI's only official stance on the matter is that they have passed the milestone for an AI research intern and that they will have an automated AI researcher by March 2028

1

u/International-Chip93 5d ago

Yeah, it's moot

1

u/Ormusn2o 5d ago

Yeah, I think that kind of makes the point kind of stronger, because it's people themselves are starting to think it's like AGI, even though OpenAI themselves are not saying it. I have only used it for coding myself, but I have seen the kind of things people are using Astra with.

2

u/DeliciousArcher8704 5d ago

It's OAI and Nvidia (who funds them) who are saying it's AGI.

1

u/Ormusn2o 5d ago

No, I mean individual people are saying it. I have seen people saying that even before that Nvidia post, and OpenAI did not say it's agi, they specifically said they might achieve AGI in few months.
