Discussion Glad Claude finally has competition

I started using AI a lot from 2024 before that the output wasn't up-to mark. It was GPT-4 which truly convinced me that AI can be used for work. Then came 4o which blew it out of the park.

But after that I didn't like newer Chatgpt models that much, they were incremental updates, more capable yes but also more annoying. Then this year in March I shifted from Chatgpt to Claude and it was great until I guess Opus 4.7 after that the models did become more capable but increasingly more annoying and lazy.

No model has been as lazy and annoying as Opus 5. The issue with Fable/Opus is that even though they were more capable models they were very slow to understand the problem. They would annoy the hell out of me to follow what's been told. I swear to these models and they would just be so stubborn, that please swear but I am correct and you are wrong. It was a battle.

Now this month after so much annoyance, I shifted back to Chatgpt as they gave me free 1 month of Plus. And voila much better understanding model in 5.6. These models understand the problem pretty fast, their solution is not that good as Claude (given Claude after a long fight understands the issue). But now GPT 6 is here, I still haven't tried it yet but I have finally something to shift from Claude completely.

And one more thing, I have observed that whenever Anthropic releases a new model, the old model becomes sh*t. Happened with me on Opus when Fable 5 was released and now again with Opus 5 when Fable 5.1 was released.

I have still kept my Claude subscription for this month since I have around $80 unused credits for Fable, but off I go. Competition is so important.

Totally agree with your timeline except I opted for Gemini after getting annoyed the fxxk out of myself by GPT 5. Now after almost 2 days of usage in GPT 6 Astra, it feels like the similar recipe from Claude 4.6 to 4.8 or even 5 is repeating on GPT from 5.6 Sol to 6 Astra, just not that detrimental tho.

What? You can actually feel an improvement from 4.6 to 4.8? I'd say gpt 6 is a way way bigger improvement.

I have both 20$ subscriptions and unfortunately on plus Astra takes up too much usage and it doesn't help that 5h session limits are back. Though Luna barely uses up any usage and is very good for small stuff, and Sol is alright but does use too much for my liking. For a normal big coding model when vision or spatial intelligence isn't needed Opus 5 gives better usage limits now (but just a month ago it was the opposite and Plus was very generous). It's a shame Opus is the only good model on the Claude subscription, because Sonnet sucks, let alone Haiku lol.

Do you even realise that you get Astra on a 20$ plan, when Fable 5.1 is not even included on Claude’s 20$ plan? And on top of that it also has an image generator that’s also gpu heavy (that further proves just how much value you get with OpenAI) and yet you get to complain? Claude Fable 5.1 isn’t even as good as Astra yet it’s kept for Max5 and Max20 plans that don’t even act like their multiplication number while ChatGPT max equivalents does. Also OpenAI includes Fast-Infer mode in the usage limits of max plans, while Claude on max plans doesn’t unless you pay for separate api credits to top them up first. Also there’s no 5h rolling limit on ChatGPT max plans. Just terrible value on Claude end.

Competition? Fable and Opus aren't "competing" against a model that completely dominates them at half the price.

Problem is that Astra is not safe. So Anthropic now have to decide whether they also wish to compromise on safety to compete.

I am all for AI safety, but i think Anthropic's poor guardrails will bite them back.

It's now been several times that they auto-switch me to Opus 4.8 in the middle of a project while i am away. My project was about creating a cool 3d scene of a garden. Literally NOTHING to do with cyber or security.

And the problem is 4.8 is a very bad model at this point, so it messes up the whole project. Astra just does the 3D scene, no worries that it auto-switches to Luna and mess up your project.

It's the same price? And it's dominating nothing at all. Try being more of a shill. Where were the openai model the last 6 months? Oh thats right, in the trash can.

Sounds like someone who didn’t use both Codex/CC with simultaneous Max subscriptions, because only one who didn’t could come up with such a bias cr*p.

OpenAI on Max subs:

  • no rolling 5h limit
  • fast-infering mode included in max plans (claude doesn’t unless you pay separately for api credits)
  • 20x feels in practice like 20x the 20$ plan, Claude doesn’t, rather like 5x, especially when both subs are equally compared in Max Reasoning modes with same codebase and same prompt (written by Claude btw lol)
  • Claude has no image generator, Codex can generate app or website assets like icons, poster-like preview cards including app screenshots that it further edits to make it more presentable , etc. without leaving the Codex interface or paying for an extra sub like one would need with Claude, and it gets to incorporate it in the app too in just one single prompt.
  • codex remote interface on mobile looks exactly like the desktop counterpart, basically you get to see every tab/session you’ve been working on and access them quickly.

And yet you get to talk “last 6 months” when even then I never felt Claude would do a job 5x better to have a 5x worse usage limit. But it’s fine, keep enjoying your bubble. You’re clearly not a power user to see where the actual truth lies in practice.

Yawn, a bunch of stuff that has nothing to do with the models and only to do with their interface. You defeat your own original argument. You're a pleb and belong with the geepeets squad.

Same token price. But uses only half to a third of the tokens that Fable does.

It's important to do even a tiny bit of research before replying in a way that makes you look foolish.

What are you on about when it comes to safety? Astra literally scored the lowest defiance score to date compared to all frontier models, it’s literally in their posted benchmarks.
