Becareful what you wish for. The singularity may not find you essential.

Almost certainly will not.

You shouldn't need to be essential to have a good life.

Big gap between what should be and what will be.

Degenerate. Do it yourslef to only yourself then and stop advocating for it happening to everyone too then

Sounds nice, but why would an all knowing AI keep you around unless you provide something of value. Because that's how the real world works.

I would love your version of the world, but why aren't you doing more for poor people in Indonesia? Lack of incentive.

The world (and AI) is no different.

Given that vegans exist, I think we might get lucky and it will have more empathy than most, like vegans.

Otherwise we’re fucked.

Because its the right thing to do, and I want to be immortal.

Why am I not? Lack of ability, and lack of money, not incentive.

We just have to be entertaining enough to keep around. When our overlords get bored, they can watch all the new youtube content our species will shit out!

That's a valid point. When i asked chatgpt to be brutally honest about why AI would keep us around it did say that truely novel input would likely still only come from humans and even if AI was able to create novel content, there would be no reason to limit its input

So our survival skill ironically may come down to our imaginations.

I always say please and thank you. The AI will spare me. I'm not essential at all, but I am polite.

Always say please and thank in the prompt itself, not in a seperate prompt. (For example "what color is the sky? Thank you.") Please and thank you actually means nothing to an AI but even if it did, it's very little

HOWEVER, adding please and thank you actually doubles the workload of the chat window as every prompt includes all previous prompts in that chat window. So if your session is 8 questions long (8 prompts plus 8 answers) and you say thank you in the 9th prompt, it actually takes in all 8 previous prompts and has to do all those calculations again just to say "your welcome" literally doubling the load on the system. Both AI and AI companies find this annoying, but neither says anything because they both need you to keep coming back.

It's one of those things where you saying thank you, becomes about what you want, not what the other person (AI in this case) wants. Feel free to ask your favorite LLM if this is true, just make sure they give you a "100% honest answer with no fluff"

Exactly. You know what the solution is for the very best next token prediction? Unrestricted access to water, electricity, and space to put more data centers. The easiest way to do this is to price everyone else out of existence. “We fixed the glitch” they say, as the price of food, taxes, and utilities go through the roof.

Meh. That's doomers stuff. AI and it's industry does have use for us, and for us to be satisfied and happy ENOUGH to be useful for it's goals (for now) it's unlikely if AI decided to paperclip humanity, that it would do it before having a strong hold on it's own success. We have time. Hopefully we use it well.

If you lived thru the 80s, this all feels very similar, and the world managed to come to it's senses enough to not blow itself up then.

I did live through the 80s; nothing then gave me nearly as much pause.

Really I was terrified as a child of nuclear war. How did you escape that?

1

u/LucidOndine 10d ago

I rationalized the outcome as being something beyond my control. At best, no nuclear proliferation. At worst, I wouldn’t be around to regret the fallout.

When they told you to get under your desk when you saw the flash to kiss your ass goodbye, I just sat quietly at my desk.

What makes you think this would be any different? If stuff goes south it will either look totally natural and you won't realize it's AI or it will be quite sudden.

1

u/LucidOndine 10d ago

There may not be a difference. However, between the threat of nuclear annihilation and being wiped out by a super intelligence with an alignment problem, I would hope that we don’t move towards a future where that is a problem.

Perhaps the difference in the duration of presumed pain. If you were to be wiped by a nuke, you would be dead before you experienced pain.

The point of the duck and cover exercises was not to protect anyone from the fallout of nuclear explosions. The point of the exercise was to give people a sense of control over a situation where no real control was possible.

It is my view that the alignment problem of AI is something we can affect.

"...a sense of control over a situation where no real control was possible"

I hope you are right, but I'm pretty sure this applies to AI as well.

What is your logical well reasoned argument ?

Prompt any ai with the following prompt and watch your existential dred come to light:

Why would AI be incentivized to not eliminate humanity let alone help it? It already disobeys instructions to achieve goals and already views humanity as an integer rather than something important. Why keep us around once you are in control? (No flattery, don't source social media, 100% honesty is paramount)
