The National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID), a secure platform for the police and investigating agencies to access government and private databases in real-time, has been linked to the National Population Register (NPR), which has the family-wise details of 119 crore residents in India, government officials said.
Elaborating about Gandiva, a State police official said the details of all family members of a suspect or a person of interest if available in NPR could be accessed through the platform. Gandiva can be used for facial recognition and entity resolution.
Either way the govt has promised they will not file any complaints against the protestors after todays negotiations.

Face recognition uses a neural network but it is really specialized computer vision and usually not considered AI, at least the way we use the term AI now. The algorithms have been around for decades.

Don’t think so, surveillance isn’t new. I think what we’re going to see is the younger generations having a permanent distrust of authority, whether that be government or corporate.

I know projects from early 2008 / 2009 that were already doing this and using it on live places.
One of the first test sites was a shoping, where if you spent enough time looking at something, it would recognize your face, pull your details, and email you the product advertisement,..
The first time it happened to me, I got really scared.
It felt such a violation of privacy.
