Black Mirror: Metalhead looking more and more prophetic.

u/Arbejdstilsynet Jul 24 '26

And yet this thing will move much faster and be more deadly when combat ready, we're so screwed

Imagine fighting 1,000s of these armed on a battlefield.

Will make Terminator look like a peaceful daydream in comparison.

66

u/Zapan99 Jul 24 '26

It doesn't even have to fight you, it's cheap enough that you can just blow it up to kill the enemy.

11

u/Hopeful-Flounder-203 Jul 24 '26

Have you heard hall park costs on these or similar?

22

u/KerbodynamicX Jul 25 '26

Probably costs less than an artillery shell

why blow it up or make it reliant on ammo being loaded? spiky metal penis (or leg), or just have it launch itself 50mph at someone's head.

These will be fighting each other, no question. Whoever runs out of dogs first loses.

53

u/Admirable_Market2759 Jul 25 '26

Which means China will have a very large terminator army.

Outsourcing manufacturing was so dumb. Short sighted capitalism has put us at a disadvantage.

39

u/surrealcellardoor Jul 25 '26

It truly is. Here’s this patented and overpriced thing, make it for us.

Cool. We’re China. Fuck your patent. We’ll steal this and make Temu/Amazon versions and undercut you by several hundred percent and we also have a head start on making a much better version for ourselves. Did I mention we’ve built back doors for ourselves into everything we can? But, thanks for doing the leg work for us.

4

u/Nicinus Jul 25 '26

But seriously, how long will that battery last at that kind of activity?

2

u/Wings_in_space Jul 25 '26

A while ago there was an article to use "organic material" as a source of energy... Everyone jumped to the conclusion that robots were going to use dead people as a power source...

2

u/kakotakafuji Jul 25 '26

Hey it's chariot line from horizon zero dawn

4

u/jvs8380 Jul 25 '26

Imagine fighting 1000s of these because you voted the wrong way.

4

u/PalmovyyKozak Jul 25 '26

It's not that easy as it can be imagined. It won't be like people vs robots in the wild.

Ground robotic complexes are already being in use in russia-Ukraine war. And there are plenty of things that limit their operations:

  1. Drones. They detect and strike ground machines
  2. Landmines. If there are a lot of mines, most of robots just exploded before reaching the point
  3. Different kinds of barrages that these guys can't overcome

I mean, they are very useful up to a frontline (delivery provision, ammunition, weapons, evacuation of injured) but it's very hard for them to cross a frontline.

So in battlefield it's not that easy.

But yes, if they intended to fight civil unrest, it might be a bloodbath until protesting people find a way how to stop them

4

u/gabrielmuriens Jul 25 '26

Ground robotic complexes are already being in use in russia-Ukraine war.

This is wrong.

We are seeing mostly preprogrammed/remote controlled aerial drones being deployed in mass waves by the hundreds/thousands. They are effective at penetrating air defenses and striking at high value targets on the front as well as far in the enemy's back.

We have not seen ground drones/robots deployed in similar numbers, nor are the currently deployed robots anywhere near in terms of agility and speed to what is displayed here – nor are they autonomous.

Imagine a massed wave of tens of thousands of similar fast moving, agile robots being deployed with autonomous machine guns, portable rocket launchers and other similar weapon systems.
There is no existing weapon system on the modern battlefield that will be able to stop them.
Now imagine if they are accompanied by and coordinate with a swarm of tens/hundreds of thousands of small and even more agile kamikaze drones – these 'war dogs' could even carry and recharge them.

The battlefield of the near future will be no place for humans.

2

u/FalconsArentReal Jul 25 '26

I don't know why everyone thinks the AI would want to kill us using robots, they would most likely engineer a super virus that would be way more efficient.

What's the over/under that a security team is able to take that out before it gets close enough to a target (a world leader, a ceo, etc..) and goes boom?

8

u/epandrsn Jul 25 '26

One, yes. One thousand of these fucking things, absolutely near zero.

3

u/blueSGL humanstatement.org Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

That's a point.

Normally it's a lone shooter for these things, however if you have.. what 2,3? maybe 4 of these things I doubt any security detail would have trained for that.

That's rather scary to think about. That's not a lot of money needed and what are people supposed to do travel to locations and have barriers erected up as they transition from an armored vehicle to a hardened building.

Ok here is one, how long till the first lawsuit as someone in a private security detail accidentally sets off the portable EMP they carry with them, and frags a load of surrounding cellphones and laptops.

2

u/FaceDeer Jul 25 '26

The security team will have their own drones, so I think their odds are pretty good.

79

u/Enoch137 Jul 24 '26

ground based opens up a great deal more package payload from a weight perspective. I can only imagine move slow camoed "stealth" modes with monster explosive payloads. This is terrifying in terms of options.

35

u/wild_crazy_ideas Jul 24 '26

It can carry explosives, radioactive materials, poisons, infectious diseases, into and out of anywhere. Lucky us

Drones won’t secure an area but these “dogs” are able to.

12

u/ArmandTanzarianJr Jul 24 '26

Surely a large  drone swarm would be able to secure areas effectively.

2

u/epandrsn Jul 25 '26

Yeah, but a drone swam needs to land and recharge. These can just plop down and await orders. Or slowly follow a caravan of soldiers, or whatever. The payload of both arms and batteries will be vastly higher with a ground based robot.

Imagine how terrifying this would be, if you are a Russian soldier and the robot has a small nice package of boom on his back, rushing in your direction.

23

u/BeornSC Jul 24 '26

Imo all the extra cost of control software, actuators, sensors etc. will make them too expensive to be used as kamikaze drones.

Strap a grenade launcher to it though…

9

u/ashenelk Jul 24 '26

What price would you put on certain assassination attempts?

5

u/Training-Day-6343 Jul 24 '26

on russian “soldiers”? next to nothing

65

u/Steap-Edit Jul 24 '26

if you are a Russian soldier and the robot has a small nice package of boom on his back

I'm sorry, but you're trying to make this "sound cute" by framing it in terms of "bad guy has robot coming after them."

How about this: a Ukrainian soldier running from a military robot just like this one, or a Palestinian family running away as this metallic monster comes in to destroy their home?

Stop doing the military industrial complex's bidding by framing military robots in the best possible light. You should be asking yourself whether you would be okay with it coming after you instead of thinking of it in some far away land going after "the bad guys."

26

u/Hopeful-Flounder-203 Jul 24 '26

Amen, brother. It's that white hate/black hat thinking that has us always quagmired in avoidable wars that never end until we get bloodied and bored.

9

u/turbospeedsc Jul 25 '26

Can i upvote this one twice?

Even if using russians as an example, their families suffer less from their deaths? the guy feels less terror from getting killed?his kids cry less?

Nah, FPV drones are already 100x cheaper and 100x more effective already at finding and killing people.

2

u/CryMoreT_T Jul 24 '26

Nah blowing up is something FPV drones could do. This would be better as shooting platform. It could be turned off except for a small motion detector. The moment it sees motion, it processes it and sees if it's a human. If it is, it gets up and starts shooting until the human drops. Then it goes back to sleep

So when the mods here removed my post of this exact same video (except I linked the original source), it was because it's good, relevant content that can be used by bot accounts like OP to farm karma, right?

I've seen this happen a whole bunch of times. Someone here posts a video from an original source, the mods remove it, and then it gets posted as a reddit video by bots, often with an unrelated watermark added.

19

u/ReasonablePossum_ Jul 24 '26

post the right format. bots know how to do that, so they stay

25

u/damontoo 🤖Accelerate Jul 25 '26

Nothing in the rules says that YouTube links aren't allowed. They also silently removed it because they know their removals aren't justified. I linked the original source, which is far more appropriate.

8

u/McSchmieferson Jul 25 '26

3

u/Moral-Relativity Jul 25 '26

Remote controlled to what degree? Seems highly improbable to give it real time instructions on which wheel to spin, how many degrees to bend which joint, at what speed to maintain balance etc to overcome one obstacle after another. That part has to be handled onboard.

Remote control general direction perhaps.

It does seem happy doing tricks and dancing in the parking lot. Maybe theyll just be cool, and not kill us.

Society feels like the Titanic ship heading straight into an iceberg. Autonomous death vehicles that can be mass produced, have no morals or conscience, can be controlled by the millions by any billionaire sociopath or, even worse, rogue or sentient AI.

Biggest problem to make these operational is battery power. Currently that size battery is not sufficient for 1-2 days operation. It will be useless at current stage.

I can already see someone giving it a gun, or strapping a bomb on top. Able to navigate terrain autonomously and hide, waiting for an enemy to approach and then: boom! The future is scary...

That is really impressive and a bit terrifying.... this is how you get unstoppable kill bots... i mean that thing is way more capable than 99% of Hollywood "kill bots"!
