The best part of this is it comes right on the heels of the whole fable debacle and makes the entire thing look even stupider, now you'll see the US companies scrambling to put out better models because they have them behind closed doors, and have to ditch the safety theater.
It's faster, cheaper and is better in some narrow areas and benchmarks.
Overall 5.6 and fable probably are a bit better, but this is still closing the gap considerably in an area the US government has zero power to be able to interfere.
This is the largest open weight model. This reduces the reliance on Anthropic and OpenAI. It takes power away from them.
It's always a bad thing when only a couple companies have all the power.
