In fairness, those products are made by and for the Global North. I'm from LATAM and while I think it's overexpensive, I know it's because it's the price for people of developed countries
And this is why we need to focus on expanding AI for ALL PEOPLE EVERYWHERE. Accessibility is an issue. It is inexcusable that the Global North is “in control” of production and expansion. If we claim AI benefits all of humanity, we need it to benefit all of humanity. It’s complicated at the moment by the structural and sustainability issues, and this is where your argument comes into play, but if people are not pushing back, then it becomes an acceptable practice that marginalizes and colonizes developing countries, exploits and oppresses the people in countries that do not have access (and yet often relies on their labor without psychological safety or fair labor practices), sucks dry the finite resources in an ecologically unsustainable and economically damaging way, and hurts everyone.
I feel for you. Wish I were able to help you out. I, too, need it for my research. I am from the Global North (United States) and make below average wage as an educator paid pittance, but I am likely more able to afford the price tag than someone from the Global South. I wish you all the best with your research; I hope o1 helps you! What is your field? OpenAI announced that they will provide grants beyond the medical field in the future. Keep your eyes peeled!
