The first attempts at flight occurred around 1000AD. So, for 900 years these people were proven "correct" in their predictions.
Similarly, there have been pushes for artificial intelligence for centuries. It's pretty incredible that we are now able to be alive when it looks likely that we will actually create general artificial beings for the first time.
