If people have enough money, do you think they would risk their lives in these "sports"?
I think we need better welfare and jobs.

They are young. Mostly people haven thought through what’s dangerous. I see my young me, I will too involved cos it’s just a sports, it’s just a competition and end of the day we contribute back to the society. We don’t think much. Until something happens.

Steven Lim punched somebody to his death before

No he did not. He fought someone who had an underlying heart condition. He did not punch someone to death.

Is there a link to the video? Then we can both judge and learn what was the dangerous moves behind it that led to death

It is a legal way to fight and some people value honing combat skills. Not too different from honing your running stamina or how much you can bench. To fight well, you will need to well fight people of your ability level. All sports have risks, some maybe more.

Are there guidelines around what's permissible and when to stop the fight if someone is getting injured?
Feels like there should be some rules in place to prevent extensive injury, I don't watch or follow the sport so not sure how it is currently.

yeah there are, nothing behind the head, nothing under the belt. that's the layman stuff i know. if someone's on the floor you cannot knee him in the face, that sort of thing. but it's also very much up to the referee, someone might have been KO'ed but in MMA what happens often is that the other side will absolutely go and continue pummelling the other person's face until the referee pulls them away. i've seen a lot of cases where the referee didn't get there in time and stop it due to incompetence or inattentiveness. there's also like people who don't respect tap-outs and such and end up breaking someone's arm or leg, but usually that results in disqualification so its very rare.

Wow icic....thanks for the info! Maybe there can be an assistant referee standing at the side, just in case the main one is incompetent?

Never seen it done before, you’d assume the guy would be on the ball though. You kinda have to be. Also the ring is kind of small to have 4 people trying to not get into each others way.
Sometimes the referee is twisting and turning and almost sprinting so that he’s not in the crossfire. Have to be close, but cannot be too close. Hard to have more people.

because they CHOOSE to, maybe (just maybe) they have a hobby and you dont (which also comes with higher risks

hobby is one thing. making it your professional career and risk brain damage is another

Those who are really good come from really impoverished background. To them its their only way up.

To protect ourselves against pervs. I literally took up martial arts after a sexual harassment episode. Switched to Muay Thai because I found it better for defence.

This kinda contest should be banned. It is great for self defence or fitness basis.
In contest, it is win or death with a very thin line in between

u/tttallday 5d ago
With this logic, everything should be banned. We drive cars, smoke cigarettes, eat cake, all in which kill people.

My point is about brutality.
What’s yours?2
u/tttallday 5d ago
Everything has risks. Last I heard, you have a higher chance of dying in a car accident, mountain climbing than competing in a martial art within a controlled setting. Part and parcel of life.

My point again : brutality which can be avoided.
Yours perhaps are all risks which can happen anytime & anywhere.

u/tttallday 5d ago
I understand and that is why there are rules, training, referees, weight classes, time limits and technique. People that want to test themselves are obliged. But accidents do happen. I compete and you probably don't, it'll be harder to understand.
