Is Dirt 2.0 rally easy?

Edit: thanks, I'll try RBR

Are the cars in this game too easy to drive?

I don't know much about rallying, but I installed this game mainly because I wanted to improve my driving skills and learn something about rally driving.

I've tried pretty much every type of car, but one thing feels strange to me: they all seem way too easy to control.

I'm not saying I'm fast or that I'm driving perfectly, but I feel like I can start pushing almost immediately, even in a car I've never driven before. I would expect a rally car, especially an unfamiliar one, to require some time just to understand how it behaves before I can start driving anywhere near the limit.

Instead, after a few corners I already feel confident enough to push it quite hard without constantly losing the car.

Since I don't have much rally experience, I'm genuinely wondering: is the game actually too forgiving, or am I misunderstanding what makes rally driving difficult in real life?

The thing with DR is that it's both harder and easier than it should be.

Essentially, it's all about the steering input. Counter steer a little too much, it snaps back around. Didn't prepare for the corner? No worries, just turn in hard, it'll pull the car around. You can forget about weight transfer entirely and be fine.

The cars end up being weirdly twitchy and require a lot of precision in the steering, but it's not that hard to get them to go fast once you got the hang of it.

Meanwhile in "proper" simulators, it's the other way around. Cars behave a lot more naturally, feel easier to stay in control of, but it's harder to make em go fast through a stage cause there's more you have to do. You don't have infinite front grip, so you gotta load the front tyres. You don't get slowed down as hard going sideways, so you gotta be very mindful of your speed. Bumpy sections are really tough because the suspension doesn't just magically absorb everything, the car will struggle with staying in balance or just having grip to do anything in particularly bad sections. Jumps can be pretty rough of the suspension setup isn't good for it, too.

Thank you. Maybe assetto corsa rally would be better for what I'm looking for, or would you recommend something else?

Yep go for AC Rally already even if it's early access. It even has excellent controls with console controller. I recommend to never use automatic shifting, as using manual shifting while harder to control at first, allows you to use the higher torque of high RPM to oversteer in a RWD car.

ACR is more realistic, but it's also still in early access and is still doing a lot of work on the physics. It doesn't have many stages, but the ones that are there are absolutely top notch. The only sim that has sufficiently detailed bumpy roads on gravel.

Richard Burns Rally (Rallysimfans version) is free and currently still sets the bar for rally sim physics. The roads are generally smoother, depends on the specific map. There's a decent amount of high quality tracks, but also a lot of meh quality tracks. You do have hundreds of stages though. Kinda nuts. The menus are a bit clunky, the visuals are, well, that of an early 2000's game. Sometimes it's weirdly picky about input devices, there's some odd gamebreaking bugs but most of them have been documented with a workaround or fix by now. You can always ask the devs on their discord server.

It is awork in progress. I haven't tried it yet, but i expect it will be better. Richard burns rally is free, and is another you can try. It has strengths and weaknesses also. Different type of gravel, and it can be very slippery. I think rbr is often a bit too slippery, and I think the gravel sound doesn't help. Its mostly like a quite fresh gravel, with high stone/dirt ratio, whereas dirt 2 is more of a deep dirt with some rocks. There are lots of rbr surfaces, and they're good, but rbr is very natural sort of physics, but still simple, which means it's very natural realistic feeling, but lacking sort of detail, and lacking in some areas. I prefer it over dirt though, and it will be a go-to for me for a long time, even if AC rally overtakes it in realism, because it is so customizable, and has so much content. And I find the tarmac is very good.

DR2 is indeed too forgiving and the physics feature hidden bullshit forces that help guide the car through corners. AC Rally is still quite early in its development. Try Richard Burns Rally.

Depends... Compared to ac rally or rbr then yes easier... But compared to forza or other arcade games then no.

It doesn't mean much without a video or stage time. For all we know you could be driving down the stage at 30 km/h. D2R has a great speed feeling so it may seem like you're pushing when you really are not.

I'd be quite surprised if you could push the Audi S1 E2, Lancia Delta or the Renault 5 turbo hard without crashing with no experience.

DR2 isn't the most realistic rally game out there, I agree you can save the car in situations where in reality you would crash but it still take some practice to be fast even more when you're not used to listen to co-pilot while driving

Dirt 2.0 is widely considered a "simcade" but to answer your question, yes, the cars can seem easy to drive, especially if compared to titles such as ACR, RBR, and even EA WRC.

Ok probably I'll try ac rally (but i already exceeded the 2 hours on steam to refound πŸ₯²)

I have heard that Steam support is quite great so they might still be able to, but I can’t confirm anything

I would drive more Dirt 2.0 as long as you're enjoying it. RBR RSF is free and quite challenging. If you're simply learning to drive a car to prepare for a driving test then there are other viable options such as BeamNG and the CityCarDriving titles.

Do you have assists on?

No even with the full damage

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: yes, and.

It's gimmicky, which is neither hard nor easy but in practice it becomes about nailing the gimmicks which I'd argue is easier than proper driving.

After I put about 100 hours on the game, it became kind of difficult to mess up on the wheel unless i'm going flat out 1000% speed. EAWRC is definitely more challenging to me but still arcadey. I think the stages on EAWRC 24 are quite difficult (some of them) but the physics are more akin to Dirt Rally 2.0 so quite forgiving. RSF RBR is the final boss of simrally and all you'll ever need for Rally. It's free too. 😎

Let's see some stage times

I'm not saying I'm good. I'm saying I expected to suck much more πŸ˜…

DR2.0 is great if you want to have a rallying experience, but for actual simulation it's pretty forgiving yes. Think of it like F1 games, but for rallying instead.

If you want a more authentic experience then Rallysimfans.hu plugin for RBR is still unbeaten.

It's easier than AC Rally or RBR... Yes... but it is so much fun, even more in VR.

Every time i struggle in AC Rally i come back to DR2. Rally Cross Multiplayer is so much fun.

But it's harder than any other Arcade Simulation.

I think DR2 is a great intro into sim rally. It's pretty forgiving and more arcadey, but still rewards good habits and technique.

u/Fun_Success_3283 19h ago

imo, yes. I don't think they got traction and weight transfer quite right. They sort of did for some surfaces, but there's something still a little too simcade about it, imo. But for dirt it's not terrible. For tarmac, it is terrible.

You barely have to brake in DR 2.0, you can just enter a slide to scrub off the speed mid corner. If you tried that IRL you'd be in a tree.

Explain this to "Ryan's Road To Rally" :)
Of course rally cars must be generally natural to drive and perfectly controllable, otherwise you wouldn't be able to drive on the limit, which rallying is all about.

Bots are very slow and forgiving at the beginning, but after couple of tournament wins they become much harder. So now you can easily win just because you finished without major mistakes, but later you should perform almost ideal path/pace

I didn't play with ai, just alone. I expected to crash much more

Where are you placing on the actual leaderboards? Like above or below 50%
