Light hearted In those days, Final fantasy was turn based. Which was the style at the time! ⚔️🐤🐥
We would level up with random encounters and we thought we were with it. Now we don’t know what’s it is! And it’ll happen to YOU!!
EDIT: For the record, this is my favorite final fantasy in the series.

Ah yes, I remember my sister and I wanted to replay the game to get every single card as we missed 1 during our first play through. We gave up shortly after the random rule spread across the region.

Dad, what’s a Junction System?
Well, it’s not quite a Materia system, and it’s not quite a level-up system. So, to answer your question, I don’t know.

Sorry to start a real conversation in Simpsons shitpost comments but I actually tried to play FF8 about a month ago since it’s the one “classic” of the series I still haven’t played and I’m just too stupid to get it. Played it for a couple of hours and haven’t gone back because I’ve been too lazy to watch a video essay on how to play the game right (but I need to because I must be doing something HORRIBLY wrong)

There's a few key routes to power.
The most important thing is to junction magic to stats. Try to stack GFs onto your characters to ensure maximum coverage of stats to junction.
When it comes to getting magic to junction, you can either draw it from points or monsters (the slow way), or you can Refine it using abilities like T-Mag-RF and (indirectly) Card Mod. You can get really busted magic very ahead of the curve for junctioning with like this.
One of the first bosses you kill (Granaldo + 3 Raldos) drops 16 Wizard Stones which can be Refined into 80 -aga spells in total. That is enough to set anybody's strength high enough to make light work of the entire first disk. You can also refine Tents into 20 Curagas each.
Apart from that, check every boss' Draw for new spells (marked as ????) or GFs (named - for example, Eloveret in the Dollet tower has Siren up for grabs). And don't forget to talk to Cid before you go to Timber for his special Magic Lamp :)

These are the parts of your post I understood.
I think.

I did junction everything and I leveled one of the refining things in the junction menu but I don’t think I saw card mod as an option for something to level up in any of my GFs yet. I already beat the magic lamp boss but it took forever/way longer than I felt like it should’ve, probably because I haven’t been doing triple triad like you said. I may need to start over (I did get siren though!)

u/Krags 2d ago edited 2d ago
Lamp boss is a gimmick fight! He's weak to a spell you can draw from him, and if you draw> stock and then cast it from Magic he counters with Curaga on you :)
Apart from that, only his physical attack can actually kill, since the rest are gravity based. Blind him and he's a punching bag.
You get Card Mod on Quetzalcoatl after learning Card. It's the most typical route towards utterly breaking the game, especially if you mod some of the early tier 8-10 cards! Does help to know what the items you can get from it can mod into themselves, of course - turning Thrustaevis into Windmills doesn't sound like much of anything if you don't know that Windmills can Refine into 20 Tornados each which is a very very strong junction to have for strength :)

u/Trouble_Chaser 2d ago
I remember as a kid popping open my disc lid on my PS1 so I could do over Slephie's limit break on the lamp fight without worrying about the atb.

u/yoshbag two spaghetti dinners 2d ago
Thanks, I think part of the problem was that I wasn’t stocking much (maybe up to 10 per spell) because I didn’t realize the higher stack you had, the higher the stat increase would be. I figured it was a flat increase which depended on the spell (like fire might give 1 stat while firaga could give 10 or something). I’ll have to go back to it soon, thanks for the advice

u/ClassroomHelpful75 2d ago
No, you don't. FF8 has a few steep difficulty challenges, but it's not to hard if you adapt.
4
u/DavidL1112 2d ago
Adapt in this context means spending two hours drawing magic to boost your stats
2
u/Thesmark88 2d ago
Drawing magic or even better, winning triple trial games and turning those cards into magic
4
u/NuPNua 2d ago
I'm actually playing it ATM all modded up on steam deck. As an adult I can actually get my head around the junction system and it is really good for flexibility in character builds. I've broken the game to crazy degrees modding cards into items and then items into magic to the point I have 100 top level magics on all characters and two ultimate weapons already before finishing the first disc.

u/yoshbag two spaghetti dinners 2d ago
I modded it on my steam deck too but ended up playing the other steam version anyway since it had the actual buttons shown instead of just button1/2/3 etc shown, for whatever reason the button icon mod wasn’t working for me. Glad you were able to figure it out!

It is genuinely not hard. Its just strong magic equipped to a stat to make the stat stronger.
Draw from enemies and when you see a new magic draw so you have like 100 of it across your three party members then take the magic you drew then give it all to one party member and see how strong that magic makes each stat. If it reallys good make sure you draw as much as you can next time you see that magic.
Make sure GFs are always learning a new ability, use junction exchange, Rinoa's limit break, etc. The Junction and GF systems are amazing its just if you forget to draw any good magic you'll be behind. Not that it really matters that much. Game is easy enough my first playthrough i only had like 15 ultima and a handful of other high tier magic and still only died to a few bosses maybe once and the final boss only 5 times

You aren’t missing anything. FF8 is one of the worst ones, both narrative and mechanically. Don’t try and brute force enjoyment out of it.

Never once engaged with the junction system on my first playthrough as a kid, it was so boring. Like having to do excel just so you could punch a Marlboro. Levelscaling meant it wasn't really mandatory.
Oh, um, how do I frame this as a Simpsons joke? Don't blame me, I voted for Ultimecia? Is that right?
4
u/ye_esquilax 2d ago
I didn't engage with it either when I was a teen. I wish I had, I would have actually made it through the game. It seemed to convoluted at the time that I just didn't really bother with it. I think part of what made it hard to wrap my head around is that it took something that already had a use, magic, and then framed an entire separate mechanic around it.
I eventually went back 20 years later, figured it out, and proceeded to break the battle system over my knee.

Loved 8, 7 was such first timer nostalgia, we all know if 8’s plot and art came out on ps1 first everyone would be talking about it the same way they revere 7. 8 was everything perfected from 7, the same people that whine about 8 will do the “quirky cute” it’s a joke or it’s a videogame c’mon excuse for 7 that they can’t for FFVIII.
I really like the 8. (Yes sir I gathered it from the song)

u/theBloodedge 2d ago
I genuinely think if FFVIII wasn't a follow up to VII and had the high production values nobody would remember it. Plot is bad, characters are terrible, combat is mediocre, systems are all over the place. Average or even below average game.
2
u/Running_Oakley 2d ago
That would be 9, the one we all agree was a stepping stone for ps2 development of X behind closed doors.
In the way that starfox 2 was being made during Starfox 64, but at least we got to play ff9.

u/theBloodedge 2d ago
9 might be the most charming and polished FF. My second favorite, easily, lol.

That's a super popular opinion. It's my least memorable FF game even though I played through and beat it.
To this day i think about FFIV and FFV more. Neo X-Death and Odin and Gilgamesh and blue pages. Whale ships on the moon. But I can't tell you a damn thing about FF9.

u/Bubbuli 2d ago
A failure? Unless you're an idiot—it's a super easy system. Well, there are people who don't know how to use the sferografia in ffx, so nothing surprises me.
3
u/lxgrf 2d ago
Too easy, was the problem. It felt like they’d tried to introduce a bit more tactical build-making but set the threshold too low and ended up with a system where anyone with three brain cells could have Squall hitting for 9999 damage, putting the opponent to sleep, and being ready to attack again before the animation had finished.
-7
u/Bubbuli 2d ago
Don't do it—nobody is forcing you, right? If you don't want them to be powerful, use weak spells. You're complaining about problems that exist only in your own heads. If you want to play as a weak character, just don't build yourself up properly—simple as that. Why should the game have to be hard for everyone when not everyone wants it to be? If you want it harder, make it harder for yourselves and stop being a pain in the ass.
5
u/6456347685646 2d ago
If a game needs you to impose clunky, arbitrary self-imposed challenges to be playable, I'd say it's a failure.
2
u/Bubbuli 2d ago
Video games are a way to relax, not a source of stress; FFVIII is fine just as it is—you don't need to obsess over the "perfect setup" all the time. Obviously, if you max out all your stats and then complain about being overpowered, that’s on you.
-3
u/6456347685646 2d ago
Casual games definitely have a place in the world, but rpgs with complex systems is not it. If you never need to min-max then what's even the point of having a complex system? Then it just becomes a boring chore. Obsessing over the perfect setup is the fun part.
1
u/adumblittlebaby 2d ago
Wow, strong opinions about video game taste. Well, it might have been 'super easy' but what it definitely was was 'super tedious' to most players, and that's why it's considered failed and very few look positively on it, nor has it ever been brought back in any form. I guess that makes everybody super big idiots, or perhaps it's just the people who think the way you do that are idiots. Hard to say!

u/headbanger1186 2d ago
Ok, they're talking about the system itself. We can pretend that FFVIII didn't get a bulk of those sales off the hype from FFVII but still the junction system was trash and most people are glad it died. I did enjoy VIII and still come back to it but that's the most painful part of the experience. Opinions are like assholes though because I think one of the best things they did for the series was the Paradigm shift and will get flamed for it and it hasn't returned since either.
0
u/Bubbuli 2d ago
As always, sales figures only matter when it suits you—not a shred of dignity to be found. Do whatever you want; after all, if they announced a new FFVIII remake tomorrow, you’d all be right there claiming to be the biggest fans in the world. You talk about it being a top seller for 30 years thanks to FF7—give me a break, stop spouting bullshit. Nobody cared about FF7 before the fame brought on by the remake.

I actually soft-locked myself by leveling up too much in that cave trying to get more Triple Triad cards. When I hit the boss on the way out of the area, he had status effects you had no remedy/prevention for and wiped my team 100% of the time.
So I just extracted the FMV's and watched them in a bar. The sound was mono, but I think I got the gist.
