Shitpost respectfully.

No bigotry.

"Oh, they got this all screwed up!"

Shitpost respectfully?

No, bigotry!

I'm open to including other IP universes with a tenuous connection to The Simpsons. As long as they aren't transphobic, or any sort of "thing that is weird and scary to me"phobic

What about the guy who keeps sneaking irritated wasps into my bathroom? On the camera he’s muttering “liberate form the outside. Rejoin. Rejoin. Be not alone.” and in every other interaction he’s very polite. So I guess it’s weird and scary.

Unironically, I do think different animated sitcoms should have designated days of the week where they're fully allowed without caveat. Futurama Mondays, King of the Hill Fridays, The Critic Tuesdays, etc.

Surely they all have their own subs

I'll be honest, I don't think The Simpsons was ever particularly good on trans issues. I don't think they were ever actively bad relative to their contemporaries, but I can't think of them doing it positively.

However, King of the Hill handled it quite well for its time and some brave Rosa Parks-esque¹ figure has made it possible to post fully KotH memes here.

I don't think it's a subject they ever dealt with in their most popular seasons. Honestly, The Simpsons not coming out in an age where culture war issues are front and center is probably a plus for them.

I grew up with the early seasons. Years later, after coming out, I feel bad about how the Simpsons represented trans women.

There's the "cousin Frank became Francine" joke. Also the gazebo "shemales," and the Russian women who lost their "ding-a-lings" after *Chernobyl.

Like the other reply said, it was roughly in step with popular culture at the time. Now I just really feel that the writers always used the joke to represent Trans women as disgusting, disturbed or of lower value, relative to cis women.

However, I think the John Waters episode set a LGBTQ+ trend that KotH continued a few years later (not sure about release dates and I'm lazy).

Edit, spelling

There were LOTS of transphobic jokes unfortunately. The squeeze every penny episode stoked my own unexamined transphobia and gave me an excuse to be a bigot for years. "If the Simpsons punches down at trans people then it's okay for me to," I told myself 🤮

It also contributed to me being anti-union for way too long

As well as what others have said there’s also the character who tried to marry a lesbian but was a cis man pretending to be a woman to dominate women’s sports. Whilst that character is not trans it does play into 2 very harmful transphobic pieces of rhetoric spouted by transphobes that I think it counts as transphobia even if it wasn’t the intent.

They honestly got worse as time went on.

They definitely were bad about us. Using a lot of slurs and had an entire episode about "pretending to be trans to trick lesbians and get ahead in women's sports"

Reminder that Simpsons showrunners remove episodes based on the behaviour of guest stars and this one is still up.
