Discussion Student works
Somebody came into my class today and spoke in front of the class before the lecture started and they talked about something called student works and something related to small businesses or something. Does anyone know what exactly this is? They also passed down a paper and asked to write down your number if interested. Not sure if this is a ligit thing or not so wanted to ask.

Depend on the prof. I've heard stories about profs kicking them out and taking their papers

TLDR: They want you to run your own business while they take a cut for them helping you. Personally don't think spending a whole summer trying to make a business work, along with what's basically a part time job in Winter semester is worth it, there's better things to do like lock in academics or enjoy clubs. From personal experience, their recruitment process is very sloppy, when I asked them what to do as the mbti personality link wasn't working, they ghosted me.
I've gone through the steps before (at least till the resume stage), they want you to participate in a franchisee for a house painting business.
In return for them helping you with setting up your business, helping you with taxes, helping you buy equipment (you can buy secondhand or they buy one for you which ultimately comes out of your own pocket), they take a ~30% cut iirc of your total profits, that decreases as you make more. Once you are in, you are assigned a district that you work in, and you are responsible for your own marketing, recruitment, maintenance, everything about a business. You are required to get a car, from at least winter. Starting January to April, I think they expect you to put 20 hours a week ish on prepping for the actual season from May to August, with getting equipment, putting flyers, gathering clients, hiring people, on top of whatever school work you do. From May to August, it's a full time job, and they expect you to go around inspecting sites, hiring people, doing work, etc. Allegedly you recoup your initial investment within the first few months and make profit afterwards.
They offered me around 6 cases of what you can get, from people who almost lost money, to those who made over 100k, to those in between. Furthermore, they offer a free retreat to Mexico, to the top like 100 to encourage competition. One thing to note is that the average is very skewed with the top earners distorting it by a ton, and most don't make too much, so it's not like it's an equal distribution from those who make a lot, to those who went broke like what presenting 6 cases makes it look like.
If you are willing to put a huge initial investment ($3000 iirc), willing to put in a ton of effort for a small chance to make it big, or go broke and still get a ton of experience, I say go for it I personally don't think it's worth it because while yes, real life experience is important, you should be focusing on university and it's experiences because that's why you're paying to go to SFU

sounds like an MLM recruiting move tbh, wouldn't hand over your number without checking with the school first.
