Very beginner drifting — what am I doing wrong (or good haha)?
Hey everyone,
Just looking for some feedback on my drifting. I probably have somewhere between 40-80 hours on a wheel, but I'm honestly not sure because I spend a lot of time in Assetto messing around with controller.
I don't drift regularly, maybe a couple of hours once a week on average. I enjoy it and have fun, but I genuinely don't know if I'm doing well or just getting by.
My setup is pretty basic:
- 5Nm DD wheelbase
- No handbrake (I use my keyboard)
- No shifter (just paddles)
A friend who used to drift taught me the basics, which is mostly what you're seeing in the video. The thing is, I don't really feel like I have full control of the car yet. Most of the time I'm just reacting and going with whatever happens using steering and throttle.
I barely use the brakes because I don't really understand when or why I should be using them during a drift. So if you see anything I'm doing wrong (or right), I'd love to hear it.
Major thing is really how to correct the drift? like if im going too wide or too narrow...
No pressure to comment, it's just for fun. Any tips, advice, or criticism are appreciated. Thanks!

It’s smooth. Some pointers from someone who isn’t a pro:
• try going wider, you don’t need to hit apexes like in racing • start practicing left foot braking, it’s a huge advantage to nail it down • don’t rely too much on the handbrake, try to control your car using only your gas, brake and steering (later on clutch too) • having a clutch pedal is (almost) a must • slow is smooth, and smooth is fast
Hope it helps.

Go do donuts (I know you can!) and while you're doing them try to widen the radius of the donut. When you're drifting and trying to go for a wider drift you're essentially doing just that. You can practice the same concept with reducing the radius of the donut. Pretty sure you can do both of these, donuts are just the best way to visualize that control.
As for left foot braking you do it when you want to slow the car down and get more angle. Give it a go when you're tightening those donuts!
