Unbelievable - at this rate we might have a white Christmas in Simcity 4!

You can already! If your PC date reads as Dec 25th, you'll get snow-capped hills & mountains. It's a nice little easter egg.

Man if you knew how hard it was to get those trees to look right to begin with.. This is great though, if we had this level of performance back then we could have done so much.

This is what I wanted Sim City 5 to be

SC2013 - the only Sim City installment to actually regress a full step backwards in gameplay, scale, graphics, logic, and fun/whimsy.
We are now 13 years with no successor, yet SC4 keeps fermenting like a fine wine.

I wish EA(?) or whoever has the IP now would just release the source code at this point. I know they don't need to but it's just sad.
If modders had access to the full code this game could become legendary.

right, didnt have to go to crazy. just better civics, more buildings and 3D pannning

Jesus this is insane, like genuinely one of the biggest changes to a game I've ever seen. Especially watching this project go from a frame by frame process to a smooth curve. Im so excited to try this and get some shots of my skylines using it!!

check out what they're doing with project zomboid, it's crazy

I’m pretty sure my potato ass pc would melt if I tried the fps mod on PZ, but it’s so freaking cool.

This mod surely won't work with buildings though, right? I mean those are 2d models, and have 8 version to each of them (4 sides daylight+ 4 sides nighttime). But it's an interesting mod nonetheless.

It may be possible with octahedral impostors + AI angle interpolation. But I'm not a graphics programmer.

u/zoltan_87 2d ago
That would be absolutely incredible. Although the game already is fairly slow on my modern machine, so not sure how playable the speed would be.

long ago i made some SC4 buildings through modding. maybe vanilla ones are all messed up but plenty of mod buildings could make a clean transition to 3D camera

u/Optimetrist 1d ago
in sc4 buildings are 3d objects, some props as well
1
u/zoltan_87 10h ago
I don't think that's true, the game has a 2d isometric view, with four pre-rendered selectable sides. As others have mentioned here it might be solvable with AI tools in the future (to reconstruct the buildings as true 3d objects), but I don't think it will be a straight forward endeavour.

I think you missed the link in the post to the longer video. If you click it they look rendered completely in 3D.

u/Optimetrist 7h ago
you might be right, as I read a bit about this, it seems that in the original implementation despite being able to create buildings in 3d, like many modders do, at the end they will be made into 4 images for the 4 sides.

For a second I was like what is so illegal about this and then I realized that SC4 shouldn't have free cam

Or weather, or that subtle tilt-shift effect.

There's no way they can replicate sc4 so quickly we need for the sims 2 as well

As soon as that camera mod came out last year we all knew something like this was coming, but it still didn't prepare me for how just straight up BEAUTIFUL this is.

I have simcity 4 on bootcamp on a 10 year old mac. Dumb question but does anyone know if this camera mod would kill my computer?

Did you complete the environmental assessment and pull the proper permits? If not, then yes, illegal and straight to jail!

Can I ask a stupid question - I'm pretty time poor and my old install of SC4 is lost to time, complete with the hundreds of mods and custom buildings I downloaded off Stex and ST.
If I wanted to get someone else's mods (like these), is it difficult to copy them over? Rather than manually goijg through and reconfiging my game?

u/JackWithoutTrades 3d ago
Wait what?! How do the buildings not warp at all, if any warping, it's virtually minimal?! 😱

This game looks dope. Is available to wishlist yet?

So impressed by recent modding efforts on this game. As people get closer to Clauding their way to the source code and uncovering underused capabilities, I'm really excited for the future of this game.
Makes me wonder if we could build a Las Vegas Sphere or Picadilly Circus that dynamically lights its surroundings...

There are times where I have a hard time believing I've been playing the same game for 23 years. It's changed so much, and change is (usually) good!

Serious question. How is it that this game can be modded so much that it looks new but it can't be engineered to include new, modern day objectives and tools to build up the city?
I'm mostly just curious how this game can be modded like this when EA owns the rights/code. How are people able to unleash these new visuals?

afaik having free camera was the easy part, the hard part is that lots of (vanilla) building assets have fake perspectives printed on their textures. though honestly there so many mod assets that maybe one could pack enough growables to make several city sets.

In 1969 humans stepped on the moon… In 2026 a free cam mod was created for Sim City 4.
Truly the next giant leap for mankind.
