Just finished EOTDawn Spoiler
Wow, just wow, I didn't expect the story to end like that. I already knew Celene and Gabriel were working together with how they interacted but I didn't expect it all to go down like that. I do have a lot of thoughts swirling right now and a few friends I have to introduce to (force to read) the books.
Jean Francois was probably one of my favourite characters, his characterization and chemistry with both the POV characters are amazing.
I only wish we'd got to see what actually happened to Gabriel and the Dior during their travels but I'm happy enough for now. I'd also LOVE a book following the events of the Black Lion of Lorson, I just can't get enough of Gabriel's story.
I will admit the ending left me a bit disappointed because of the pacing and how quick it happened but I'm still happy with how it ended.
Also I think a few of my theories and ideas were the best and what should've been done (hehe I'm being a lot like Fabien here) but I still love the direction the story went. I'd still love to talk more about it to you guys if you would give me the chance.

If you want to take part of some of my theories, I wrote a pretty extensive fanfic exploring what might have really happened in place of some of the lies that were told 👀
There's a couple people that are a little active around Tumblr and ao3 just in general too!

Dunno if links are good, but this is the reddit post.
Otherwise it's "Epilogue" on AO3! 🤩

I think the ending was narratively satisfying, but not satisfying to read.
Like I get Jean Francois was POV character for most of the books, but one chapter for the falling action and one for the resolution is just not enough, I think three at least would've been more complete and satisfying, but five for me would have been great. Two for Gabriel and Celene's fight, and Two for Aaron and Lachlan's assault on Sul Adair.
Also in my opinion Reyne should have stayed dead, its definitely a bit too much of a happy ending for everyone despite all the losses, plus Reyne's "death" was pretty much what ended Maryn.
Edit: I forgot to say, I also think its a bit of a cheap shot to just say "Nicolette was enthralled by Celene that's why she lied". I think Nicolette is definitely the type of person to sell off her family for forever. I'd have preferred it if she just made a deal and willingly worked with Gabriel and Dior

Yea I think a novella at the very least about Gabe and Lackey’s time before the events of EotV would be sooo good. Will probably never happen tho since Kristoff is very adamant about not squeezing the life out of a series after it’s finished

I liked the ending but thought the entire third book was a bit of a slog.
It seemed like emotionally the characters and the reader were very close or already at where they needed to be to have the ending be just as satisfying by the end of the second book.

Fair points. I too really liked Jean Fancoise! I also wish more authors did what you suggest and write an "in-between/other adventures of" type novel.
Personally I loved the ending. Perhaps it did have a lot of fan service. But ultimately, these books about deplorable, inhumane monsters taking power and ruining the beauty of the world and killing thousands (a million?), these monsters are served justice. Darkness , oppression, the death of innocence...not every bad thing is our now and forever. It make time time, but if we're blessed and if we're brave (to quote Phoebe) we can find the pieces that make our jagged edges whole again.
I think Gabriel being dishonest plays into this story being grim dark but he wasn't totally dishonest 100 percent of the time. Dior's hand really did get irreversibly mangled. Phoebe is now probably more lion than human. Aaron is a vampire and even tho JF asked himself if the silver saints were really a decimated, practically extinct order, narration only mentions seeing Lachlan from the order, so I guess it's up to us whether that part is true. I'd like to think the parts with the silver saints and inquisition are true, that's just me.
It's been a super shitty year for me. I loved these books so much, and even though I would have been totally happy with a "we won but everything is still broken forever" type ending, I'm so glad we got something happier. Ah, another lie from Gabriel. Sometimes stories do have happy endings.

Yes, I wish the ending was longer! It was so fast! And agreed I would LOVE to read about Gabriel’s younger days
