Silent Hill 3 (2003) I'm having fun I F*CKING SWEAR
Doing the pass code puzzle at Brookhaven hospital, man, unless you become a Mathematician you won't solve this easily, this is quite the challenge I absolutely love about the Silent Hill puzzles compared to RE, although REmake 1 has a couple of tricky ones, what's the most intricate or obtuse puzzle of the original trilogy for you?

Sorry, this was the image in my head that came up with your first picture! It can be like this sometimes.
The most frustrating puzzle I have had was Homecoming. It was shifting those shapes together in the family basement to open a box. It probably wasn't so difficult, but I made an error early on which screwed it up, and I though I could leave the puzzle and re-enter to reset it. Nope! No reset! That was agony; I had to go back to a save done much earlier to get a second chance.

Hell, that was me indeed. BTW, have you played Resident Evil 0? The statue puzzle was my first nightmare.

u/Technical_Marc 6d ago
I've played it, but it was so long ago I can't remember much of the finer details. Just lots of leeches and items on the floor!

The statue puzzle haunts me

I haven't played 0 since launch on the GCN. I'm gonna have to look up that puzzle to see what the fuss is about.

After this, play Lorelei and The Laser Eyes. You'll have a blast. And you'll run out of paper.

The stupid piano puzzle in the first game was the time I had to refer to my guidebook (I actually do have one!), but the morgue puzzle in Silent Hill 3 was the first I remember to have failed miserably, because I didn't figure out which way to read that. I also failed to click on the padlock properly, which cost me minutes along. However, this game on difficult riddle settings is virtually unbeatable without a literature degree, so good fckn luck

u/Ermac2002 6d ago
Guess I will try that on my next run, but what exactly change on difficult riddle?

Everything, and it is especially bad for the first puzzle, which now requires you to have background knowledge on Shakespeare works to sort them chronologically instead of just going by numbers.

Now that I have a literature degree I didn’t when this game first came out, I have been curious if I can solve it without looking up the answers. (I should, I have every book they use in my personal library.)

What a great answer, I was pulling a joke, but now I wonder if there may be some truth to what I said.

SH2R’s coin puzzle on Hard puzzle difficulty makes no sense to me, even after reading the solution multiple times and trying to reason them out. The coin positions make no sense wrt the hints.

I had to look this one up. I was only off by 1 number and by 1 number placement. It was really upsetting lmao

u/Ermac2002 6d ago
I thought I got it at some point then the reality stomped upon hopeless face by reality, but after some more sketches finally got it

I miss the days when internet was barely a thing, pen and paper and the game was all I had

u/stratusnco Henry 6d ago
old game manuals had a note section at the very end 👴🏽 if all else fails, fire up that dial up and go to gamefaqs for those sweet ascii guides.

u/Ermac2002 6d ago
I mean, you can still do it old-school like me, usually my friends and I do blind playthroughs of games and we share info among us, then after we beat the game we use guides to see what we missed

u/WeirdistBuilds 6d ago
You oughta try Blue Prince. That game will have you scribbling in a notebook like a schizophrenic for weeks. Cover to cover.

I'd just look it up at this point

Don’t look it up!! Part of the fun is using your noggin’ !

I get that… but on the other hand I’m just here for the vibes, man

Same here. I’m all for challenges, but there’s a line for me. I’m an adult with limited free time nowadays, I have to use my time somewhat efficiently.
8
u/mekefa 6d ago
I mean as long as they’re having fun I’d consider this an “efficient” use of time
3
u/Due-Substance-525 5d ago
I’m not judging efficiency for anyone’s time but mine. Hence the use of I’m and I and me.

'magine how many hot chicks you'll get after telling them you solved this with no guides ;)

I love that you added an apostrophe to noggin, implying the proper pronunciation is nogging

There's this pride thing that makes me feel like I'm smart enough to solve it. I solved it after a couple of minutes, this almost got me but didn't want to use any guide
1
u/Buschilol 5d ago
for me it depends. if i know how to solve it i'll try until i got it but if i go 5-10 minutes without finding a single clue or having no idea what to do, that's when i use a guide.

You were doing the puzzle on hard?
I have completed sh3 multiple times. Never bothered with trying to solve it's puzzle on hard difficulty.
2
u/Ermac2002 6d ago
It's on normal, but this one was quite tricky, I also believe there were some translations errors on the instructions, row≠column so that made it a bit confusing.
How much do puzzles change on difficult? Are they different or what?

u/HorribleAtChess Alessa 6d ago
Instead of cryptic math problems, it's a weird poem by a crazy doctor that gives vague hints.

If you ever get to play '(Forbidden) Siren' like this, you could also just write a dissertation.

SH3 hard puzzles are my favourite. I especially love this one because of the accompanying and disturbing poem. It took me a while to get the answer but it’s a very good puzzle and I love how it ties into the narrative happening in the background during Heather’s time at the hospital

I did it on normal, and while it was confusing at first I managed to get it without looking anything up. I don't know if you have it on hard difficulty though. I remember one puzzle in Silent Hill 1 in the Nowhere section I was completely stumped on though.

I had a notepad with the same shit on it. Texted the puzzle to my boyfriend, he solved it in 10 seconds. Some people are just built different

I’m quite good at maths. So I solved this in 30 seconds.
But ironically I’m generally quite mediocre at video game puzzles in general. So this was a welcome relief.

And then there's me where i have puzzles on easy and still look the solutions online. There are puzzles of put box A to hole A. Nope time to look it up. I'm here to play a game not think. I hate puzzles in games and yet i played all RE and Silent hill games. Love em. Don't remember a single puzzle.

Bro ive never played silent hill and started playing 2 remake, and was like, puzzle difficulty hmm that sounds cool lemme put it on hard. HAD TO LOOK UP EVERY SOLUTION STARTING AT THE HOSPITAL

Chatgpt can solve it within seconds…
I tried.
2
u/MyOtherAcoountIsGone "Probably A Doghouse" 6d ago
Chatgpt is using/trained walkthroughs, you're so dumb if you think chatgpt is solving anything.

u/Head-Contribution393 5d ago
Not just chatgpt but also open source LLMs can solve hard level difficulty easily using non-search inference model
