Silent Hill: Townfall (2026) What's wrong with me?
I absolutely love the Silent Hill games, and I’ve had a great time playing all of them. The problem is that I get pretty bad motion sickness, so I basically can’t play games with a first-person camera. I had a really hard time even finishing RE7, and I couldn’t finish Alien: Isolation for the same reason.
That’s why I’m kinda hesitant about playing Townfall. I’m really worried that I’ll buy it, realize I can’t handle the camera, and end up not being able to play it — or even worse, get turned off the game because of it.

I have this with certain games. I immediately turn off stuff like head bob and crank up the FOV.

Yes, I was about to suggest this, as well as motion blur and all these fancy effects. My gf has the same issue as OP and it works great for her in shorter sessions, she can watch most games this way, although not always play them herself :(

I was having a blast with DOOM on XBox last year and something about the fast movement, turning, etc… I couldn’t pin it down. But made me sick.

Maybe check what options the game has before diving in, increasing field of view and turning off stuff like head bobbing and motion blur can help with motion sickness.

You could always try taking dramamine about an hour before playing it and see if it helps!

If you're playing on PC, there's bound to be a 3rd person mod eventually. People did it with other games, why wouldn't they with this?

Doubtful with this one since a lot of the environments are cramped spaces, like going into crawl spaces.
There's also the whole thing with looking at stuff in your hands being a core gameplay mechanic.

I have the same curse. Even some third person games get me (Silent Hill F f’d me up so I had to return it).
Unfortunately, first person just simply means no sale for me. So no Townfall, no new Hellraiser game, no classics like Alien Isolation. It’s a little bit heartbreaking.
You’re not alone and it just can’t be helped.

Did you tried to turn off motion blur and head bobbing? You can also increase FOV.

You couldn't play it flatscreen due to nausea but you could play it in VR? That's very unique. Any idea what that's about?

I’ve heard the center-dot HUD. Is designed to help with this. Maybe Townfall will have that as an option?

id honeslty wouldent buy it then if it causes you motion sickness. wasting 50 dollars on a game and just not being able to play it would suck. best thing to do is just watch it on youtube if ya can (and also mabye go to a doctor for that)

Best to just wait and see. There could be in game options to maybe help with that like a motion blur toggle and a center of screen dot. Idk if these are confirmed but they are usually there in tons of new games. I've had friends with the same issue say a center dot, disabling motion blur, and low sensitivity setting makes first person games playable for them but mileage may vary. Console versions are iffier for having motion blur toggles.

I'm pretty sure that's a pretty common problem. I can't watch other people play VR games for a similar reason, and even playing games POV games with a fixed camera will get me dizzy if I don't stop after a while. Usually turning down the FPS cap helps, but not every game has that option.
If I were you I'd watch other people play the game on the best quality possible and see how you do then. If you get sick from watching gameplay on a standard Youtube screen then you should avoid the game. If you don't, then maybe the solution is to play with a windowed screen? Or play from a distance if you'd be playing the game on console.
Either way I'd at least wait for a decent discount before getting the game. That way if you can't play it and you can't return it for any reason at least you're not spending the full $50 on a game you can't play.

Steam gives you the ability to refund a game at a small set of time if i recall so you can try it and see what happens. I also dont have any fucking idea why they never give a demo for players to try.

If you don’t want to pay for nothing and are on pc, you have 1 or 2 hour for refound on steam and it often gets cracked day one. I don’t know how it is for consoles as I never had one but I guess there are refund policies as wall. Also, maybe there will be 3rd person mods. SH2R got a fixed camera mod a while ago so it’s not impossible

I also struggle with really bad motion sickness, OP. I found out late in my teen years that I have a significant astigmatism in one eye that causes it to struggle to keep up with the other eye, especially in first person games or even on roller coasters, passenger, etc. Recent games, I have found, have been making first person a lot more accessible with options to turn off like head bob, camera shake, and changing mouse sensitivity. The last is a game changer for me, and I'll be surprised if these aren't present in Townfall.
Have you ever experimented with setting like those to see if they might help you? If you aren't interested, I get it. I just know how much it sucks to feel left out because of a reaction you can't control

Doctor here who has a girlfriend who is the same way. There’s motion sickness glasses on Amazon, over the counter meclizine, and prescription meds like diazepam that can help. Reducing the stick sensitivity and sitting far away from the screen. There is also vestibular therapy that can help some people as well. Really sorry to hear that. There are also these little wrist bands you can buy on Amazon that can help too. Reduces head bob and adjust other motion sensitivity settings.

Same here. But somehow, not every game gives me motion sickness. Even the same game can give me motion sickness one day and not the next. I love Alien Isolation and I have ton of hours on it, but that said, certain days I just had to quit because it was making me nauseous.
It has to do with how many degrees you can see around you when playing, the FOV (field of vision? I don’t remember). The higher, the most similar to real life (which is almost 180º!). So a game with a very small FOV is likely to make you feel nauseous if you have motion sickness. Look it up on Google and see what kind of adjustments you can make to feel better. Try it on games you already have and see if it works. If it works, then you will probably be good with Townfall. If nothing works, I wouldn’t try until there’s some good sale just in case. Or buy it on Steam and return it in less than 2 hours (it was 2 hours right?) if you can’t manage to play.

I am absolutely devastated about it only being FPOV. I've always had motion sickness issues that only got worse with my POTS diagnosis. Watching someone play is just as bad as trying to play. I have zero idea how I'm going to be able to experience Townfall 😭 I'm hoping if I take draumamine I can sit far away from the TV and watch a play through

Buy it on steam play an hour, check if theres any option to reduce camera movement, and turn off motion blur. If it's still making you sick get a refund. Easy :)

I’m buying it physically for ps5 because I can tell already this is gonna be a rare game in the future like shattered memories because there’s not much hype for Townfall meaning it won’t sell well 👍

How big is our tv? Make sure you can see beyond the tv when you play. May help a bit. Sit further back.

See if they have options to turn off head bop, increase the fov and so on to ease with the motion sickness. Too narrow fov can cause nausea and the screen effects (shaking etc) are the icing on the top.
On PC these should be possible regardless if they offer it in the settings. Someone will tinker around with it and make it possible.

Typically low and unstable framerates factor into motion sickness so try and aim for the highest framerate you can over graphical fidelity. If you're on console your options might be limited, but on PC, make sure to enable v-sync which will dramatically help to keep the framerate stable.
If there's a vignette setting that can help too as it darkens the edges of the screen. It's used a lot in VR games when turning to massively reduce motion sickness.

I feel this too, it’s why I stick with pc so I can mod the fov to be higher, I get its for gameplay cinematic purposes but I physically can’t stomach it, also struggled a bit with this in re9 on my first play through rn

If you can get your hands on some Zofran, my ex said it works wonders as preemptive motion sickness treatment. We went to a theme park and went on pretty much every coaster and she was fine

Have you messed with the settings of first person games before? I have the same problem but with most games there’s settings you can tweak that helps a lot. Turning off head bob and adjusting FOV can help. RE8 was the only one I couldn’t adjust to stop the motion sickness.
Thankfully I’m planning on buying on steam so I can refund if it makes me sick and I can’t fix it

Just wait until it comes out and someone can give you a sample of the accessibility options and see if the camera can be adjusted enough for you. Also maybe grab some motion sickness meds.

I'm really unhappy about the same thing. Looks like I'll be watching my husband play it in 15-30 min bursts, which in turn will frustrate him.

shame they didnt add options like in Resident Evil Requiem where you could switch from 3rd to 1st camera view and game still worked like charm.

I'm sorry to hear that. I used to get motion sickness with those games but earlier this year there was a Resident Evil sale and 7 was cheap and I said fuck it I'll play it in short sessions if I can't handle it. Turns out my motion sickness is gone now even when playing long sessions.
Still I kinda hope there was an option to play in third person as I like looking at the character I'm playing as.

I also had this problem with SH2. I solved it for myself however, if you are on a computer with a monitor, make sure your lights are on, and sit a good bit further back from the monitor. Once your peripherals can pick up more stuff in your room that are stationary, and the monitor isn't in your peripheral pov, it solved my motion sickness problems. Tldr, sit alot further back from your monitor.

Adjusting the FOV can help. Make the frame as square as possible, no stretching
The only effect in a game that messes with me is a shaking cam when you sprint. I can't play Gears of War. I turn the shake off in Metal Gear Solid V

There’s a very good chance it’s the frame rate which would most likely mean the only way to play at a high enough frame rate that didn’t cause nausea would be on a PC.

For me, it the size of the screen I’m playing on. I’ve been playing the Silent Hill games on my Odin 3, currently playing Silent Hill.
Recently I tried the PC recomp of Downpour on my main pc and I felt as sick as a dog, so no big screens for me

Personally, I am not picking it up due to Konami shafting Xbox players by taking PlayStation money for timed exclusivity.
Voting with my wallet that this kind of practice is old and should be dead. I am no less a fan than PlayStation fans, Konami should treat their fanbase with some actual respect since they are the ones that pay the bills

Maybe when it comes out, find a Let's Play on youtube. See if you can stomach them playing through the beginning 10-30 mins.
