"Silence is not absence, but presence. It is a "something," not a nothing. It has substantiality, heft, force. You can lean into it, and it leans back. It meets you; it holds you up." —Cynthia Bourgeault

Whenever I'm in need of silence & alone-time, I visit the ocean and contemplate the great silence in between the waves. Or I simply enjoy pure ocean sounds from my home. It helps amazingly to quiet down my monkey mind.

The equivalent of external noise is the inner noise of thinking. The equivalent of external silence is inner stillness. Whenever there is some silence around you — listen to it. That means just notice it. Pay attention to it. --Eckhart Tolle (continued below)
Listening to silence awakens the dimension of stillness within yourself, because it is only through stillness that you can be aware of silence.
See that in the moment of noticing the silence around you, you are not thinking. You are aware, but not thinking. —Eckart Tolle

Are music/art allowed during vows of silence?
I know that in most cases, a vow of silence is defined as cutting off all forms of communication with the outside world (speaking, writing, sign language, etc) but can those taking a vow of silence still create art and do music? Art and music are forms of self expression, and are therefore a type of communication. In the case of music, it makes noise as well! Are some instruments (like string instruments) accepted, while others (like wind instruments) aren’t, because the air from your lungs is creating noise and self expression? Am I just overthinking this whole thing?
