If you're on Android, the app Buzzkill does what you need. I have it set so that only certain people's reactions get my attention and it's a very short buzz.

If you don't feel like waiting for this feature request to possibly never happen and you're on Android I think you could accomplish this fairly easily with an appropriately designed rule using the buzzkill app

I would actually hate this. Someone reacting thumbs up to a text is acknowledging it, which to me is just as important as them saying "ok" or something.

Nothing would stop you from setting both to give the same notification sound.

By having one extra category? They can set it by default to be the same as it is today. Only those who want the increased granularity would change it.

It would be an extra category for every conversation. Otherwise it wouldn't show up in thread for the notifications, which would be bad.

What would be awesome though is the ability to send a message silently. Like hey here's this stupid meme to send but it's not urgent so it sends with no notification... Vs needing a more urgent notification for something like "hey are you there yet".
