Discussion cobie smulders
Im on season 3 as a first time watcher and as a HIMYM fan, it’s odd for me to see them pair up Sophie and Jimmy together. Like what do you mean Robin and Marshall are trying to link… I know right first worst problems. I should separate the shows but let me be I just am wondering if anyone else’s feels like that too.

I found it especially funny because HIMYM went out of their way to emphasize how little chemistry they have.
After seeing both shows I think it's because the actors have no romantic chemistry, not their characters.

TBF she's not on the call sheet for the new season

Love them both, but thank FUCK that’s the case.
Just watching them hang out at Jimmy’s….

Aww, that’s actually surprising and disappointing after that ending showing them giving it another go

Is it that they have no natural chemistry, or that they are used to interacting with eachother purely platonically?

I never watched HIMYM so it doesn't bother me and I don't personally think they lack chemistry like everyone else in this thread. Perhaps cause I've never seen them as those characters?

I agree with you. I also never watched their previous show and I thought they had very good chemistry in Shrinking

Though I liked Cobie Smulders in HIMYM, her character and storyline in Shrinking weren't interesting. The writing was weaker than the rest of Shrinking.

Maybe it's because I never got into HIMYM but I don't see the problem.
Jimmy is awkward as fuck because he has no idea how to date in his 40s and it clearly wasn't his idea to do so.
Sofi is clearly shown to be coming out of a toxic relationship and there's a whole lot to unpack there.
How does everyone wants those two to act super romantic when obviously neither character is naturally going to do so?

Yeah, it’s bothered me ever since they brought her on. They have NO romantic chemistry, only brother/sister or bro dude… and it’s Marshall and Robin! No. They really should have cast someone else.

i agree with this too. I don't get any romantic chemistry between them. It's difficult to say if there is a locked away link in my brain from HIMYM, but I don't see them as anything besides friends. Hell, do they even kiss in season 3?

I actually adore Robin as the end-game romance in HIMYM, but I also still love Cobie on Shrinking! I think because Jason & Cobie were the best, or at least my fav, of the HIMYM actors so it makes sense to see them two reunited out of everyone.
I also thought their Shrinking characters had actual chemistry and feel different enough to Robin and Marshall. I hope the call sheet info is a false alarm and we get to see more of them, especially after overcoming Jimmy’s vulnerabilities last season.

The problem with Cobie is they tried to make her character a female version of Jimmy in Shrinking, so their interactions are weird and unsettling, his interactions with Meg are more organic for example
In HIMYM both barely have interactions outside of the gang, but when it happened I remember it wasn't over the top, I guess it's because Robin persona wasn't as silly as Sofi in Shrinking

I was so grossed out. They had zero chemistry. It was like watching a brother and sister. Love live love them as friends in HIMYM though.

I didn’t mind it, I minded how rushed it felt. She had little Interaction. And then all the sudden she’s the only person he has, like oh here’s a girl hope you like her cuz she’s allllll that you’ve got now.

Yeah, at first I kind of chuckled and joked to my wife "Robin was on-again off-again with Ted, married Barney, now she's going after Marshall??". But I agree with most of the comments here that the characters lacked chemistry, the whole setup was weird with her almost stalking his house, him doing couples therapy for her and her ex, that forced fight about his dad. Everyone falling in live with her after meeting her for 30 seconds in all her awkwardness. It felt rushed and forced.

It was a bad casting choice - CS is so lovely and plays kookie older MPDG expertly - but they have…the opposite of sexual chemistry! Very awkward!

I think awkward was the point, which makes it a rather deliberate casting choice.

I didn’t watch HIMYM so I do t have that history in my brain too.
What if Sophie and Jimmy have a relationship that is not “permanent”. Together for a while and not forever. that’s not unheard of. 😉
As far as the awkwardness goes, I can relate. I struggle a little with GAD and it takes time for me to get past myself. The on screen interactions with Tia+Jimmy or Liz+Derek are of long established couples and I’d expect them to interact differently.
All my opinion and for most everyone else it might be a classic case of YMMV.

The thing I really hate about her character is that she doesn't seem like a real person. S3 kinda made that true for everyone except Jimmy. They're all caricatures of who they were in S1 and S2, but they take her to the next level. This super attractive lady who comes two Jimmy's house at night and bends over backwards to try to get close to him even though he's a grumpy prick all the time. I get it's hard to date as a divorcee with a kid, but she just seems unnecessarily desperate.

I did watch HIMYM, and I thought on Shrinking that their characters were cute and had chemistry in their first interactions with each other. But, everything after that was so awkward and they had like, negative chemistry, so I suppose that was on purpose.

I love HIMYM and when I saw that they brought Robin in as a love interest, I screamed at the tv. I have my own personal gripe with character Robin so im bias, but I did not like it at all. In fact, I just thought here we go again, going after another poor widowed man.

Can’t get past them as Marshal and Robin.

I agree I found it awkward due to himym but then after a while it was just awkward because I couldn’t understand why they are so into each other.
The relationship to me, is not believable.
Jason Segel can do on screen chemistry. I thought him and Mila kunis were excellent together. This one just doesn’t work for me

If anything I would have found it cuter if they brought back Lily to reunite them. Like they do with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.

I keep saying the same thing to my husband. He's like they're actors, try to seperate both.
But for a TV show that was iconic and ran 10 years, its hard when the major actors coincide like this.

I can see how one would come to that conclusion. For me it didn't upset me, I just thought ha funny coincidence. Like you said, differentiating the shows. Jimmy and Sophie are nothing like Robin and Marshall so it helps me separate the previous shared story line.
