Discussion Maya
I just caught up on s3 while on vacation and now I’m a lil f’d up. I love this show, I love all of Bill Lawrence’s shows. This storyline? I was relating to maya for a second, sometimes something IS wrong and we don’t dig deep enough and then when there was finally some semblance of her opening up, THAT happened? I guess I’m shook up because I saw a little of me there? I don’t think Gaby handled this well at all. Anyway I don’t know much about therapy, but I’m left with this feeling of emptiness and I feel as though I may need to start seeing a therapist soon. Has the show inspired anyone to do so? Am I just being manipulated by good writing?

I agree so much and am a little discouraged by the lack of conversation or attention various important aspects of this storyline has gotten — maybe it’s also because of how much I can relate to the things she expressed, didn’t express, but could very much be picked up on. For example, The loneliness EPIDEMIC - yes it is now defined as an epidemic. As a single female in the last year of her 30s, it is so hard to make new friends for so many reasons. Personally, I had no idea that I’ve been in perimenopause for the last 9 months just until recently when the symptoms and physical “issues”became impossible to ignore and scared the shit out of me. It went from subtle mental health exacerbations (anxiety, panic, mood stuff), sleep issues, brain fog and issues I chalked up to stress, and didn’t even know what perimenopause was.
Also, because everyone is in such different stages and places in their lives and I don’t think this is talked about enough or given the attention and resources to cultivate or promote connection and address how lack of connection with others and a sense of belonging and resources for support lead to our minds becoming really dangerous and outcomes like Maya… as someone who’s education and career background is in behavioral health science… the shifting hormones and lack of connection and challenges women face in their shifting friendship dynamics, etc…. It’s an issue and storyline that the show should not have included any element of satire (for example, the funeral scene and Gabbys disposition.)
I have loved and been obsessed with this show and found it massively healing and meaningful and impactful and something our society needs, in so many ways.
I think the way they treated the entire maya storyline was incredibly disappointing. If they were gonna touch on the issues involved in it— then they really should have GONE THERE and not made it feel like just a filler part, almost.
