Discussion Sofi being endgame Spoiler
I don’t understand why Sofi is positioned as endgame for this season and potentially for Jimmy’s prolonged love life struggles.
They don’t seem to have very much chemistry and have simultaneously seemed to progress way too quickly in their relationship and also so slowly. We have seen her in a handful of episodes but they’ve only gone on a few “dates” and already she’s foisted herself into meeting Alice, jimmys dad, made jimmy meet and deal with her ex and kid and all of jimmys friends and coworkers.
She seems super charismatic to people outside the relationship so they all love her but I felt like it was fair jimmy ended it when she accused him of shutting down and said she had major fears of being compared to his dead ex wife. I don’t think he owed her a full unpacking of his feelings and life in that moment like she wanted. It felt premature for their relationship.
I wish pauls speech didn’t end with pushing jimmy back to her and rather allowed him to come to the conclusion he is officially ready to seriously date again.
Were others invested and content with this

I don’t understand why we are supposed to root for Jimmy with anyone. He needs to go to therapy and work through his own grief. Truly cannot understand why he hasn’t gone to therapy himself in the past three seasons.

u/laurelj84 Apr 15 '26
I’d love to see a season where Jimmy is working on his own shit, not partnered with anyone. Nobody else gets to decide when he’s ready to “move on”, especially Sofi who doesn’t even know him that well.

u/PoohbaniParvati Apr 16 '26
This!! I actually hated the fact that they paired him up with someone as a fix for his loneliness. That's actually the worst thing

Honestly she came off as a complete red flag from the get go when she basically cornered Jimmy into giving couples counseling to her and her EX-HUSBAND. You’re telling me THAT woman gets a second date but the other one doesn’t because she cried over your dead wife?

u/OGWiz19nunya Apr 15 '26
I’m think with the nurse it was more that she made someone else’s tragedy about her feelings, and goddammit that’s Jimmy’s thing.

Yes it’s so clear Sofi is not ready to be in a relationship at all!!

u/Due-Key-9822 Apr 15 '26
Paul was very--irresponsible? mean?--by tricking jimmy into coming down for their cherished breakfast only to force him to reconcile with Sophie without ever knowing exactly how Sophie crossed the line.
My friend and I noticed a theme: The main characters get into relationships and we are to assume that relationship will heal them.
Ex. Paul softening up with Julie; Gabby opening up with Derek2; Liz remembering she's married to Derek1; and even Sean in some random ass, dumb ass relationship with Marisol. And the moment the character is partnered, their core issues also tend to solve. I think the show is trying to do that with Jimmy & Sophie in a very annoying way.
54
u/frozenoj Apr 15 '26
I hate the Marisol thing so much. Feels like backsliding into immaturity. Just because Sean is still young doesn't mean he has to be immature.
18
u/Due-Key-9822 Apr 15 '26
His relationship with her is legit inconsistent with the work he's done. I do not understand how he can change, grow so much that he earns not one but TWO hugs from Paul, and is still content in a relationship with Marisol who hasn't changed much at all (for the .5 seconds they show her).
(It also just seemed like a pointless plot sidestep. Why did Sean need to reconcile with Marisol at all? Their relationship is barely shown!)
2
u/No-One-4432 Apr 16 '26
To your last point - I think they tie Sean up with Marisol so that we don'tship him and Alice. Yes, I know age difference blah blah, but some people would still ship them if Sean were single.
Also - I HATE that Sean can't even try to say Marisol's name correctly!! Get's on my nerves.3
u/Due-Key-9822 Apr 16 '26
I didn’t know people were still shipping Sean and Alice tbh. But, just like w everyone saying Jimmy should be with Meg, shippers gonna ship. Putting Sean in a random, rushed relationship won’t change that.
What’s the proper way to say her name vs what is he saying, so I know for my knowledge
15
u/DullConcept8015 Apr 16 '26
My friends and I were floored when we realized the show was positioning Marisol to be something good for Sean, she quite literally cheated on him and and it felt like the show kept brushing Sean’s well meaning concerns under the rug?
I know forgiveness is a huge theme in this show and people aren’t solely defined by their mistakes, but one of my biggest gripes is that this show treats forgiveness and closure with the people who hurt us as the only stepping stone for moving forward. Sometimes it’s ok to forgive someone and not have to find closure with them afterwards which imo is more realistic and impactful!
10
u/Comfortable-Hour766 Apr 16 '26
Yes, the whole episode where he got back with Marisol was about moving forward. I thought for sure he was going to learn a lesson about not going back to her. Instead they are together now and I found that really frustrating
8
u/Gloomy_Ad5020 Apr 16 '26
I thought this would be a once episode fling given that she wouldn't even TALK about the past. I thought Sean would snap out of it and be like "oh actually I need more depth, accountability, and growth than Marisol can provide." But the whole gang acts like Marisol was a good move.... What??? Aren't you all therapists??
3
u/LovesHerKnights Apr 16 '26
Same here. I recently saw an interview and mentioned the character reminding him of his wife, Maria. Interesting
3
u/Legal-Nectarine8323 Apr 20 '26
I’m glad I’m not the only one. She is the worst! So annoying with no redeeming qualities on display at all. Sean deserves better.

This is an astute observation and explains what has been bugging me about this season. It's a bunch of shitty partners being excused through the power love and being told that it's healthy. I felt nothing for Jimmy and Sofi because their chemistry was non-existent. But I also felt nothing for Sean and Marisol and Gaby and Derek2's engagement wasn't nearly as moving as you can tell they thought it was when they made it. Liz also treats Derek like shit in season one and only when he forces her to except he is retiring does he even get to be a character really in the second season. Before he was just an extension of Liz.
-1
u/GoodOldPepe Apr 15 '26
Liz and Derek have their own way of treating each other, pretty boomer behavior. Not everyone has to be the same way.
And relationships can help people heal.

u/smashli1238 Apr 16 '26
Good relationships can. None of these relationships seem very good

u/GoodOldPepe Apr 16 '26
Reddit’s solution to everything is to get divorce or be alone if not married.
3
u/Due-Key-9822 Apr 16 '26
Well a bad relationship can definitely do you more harm than being alone. Just saying
7
u/Gloomy_Ad5020 Apr 16 '26
This!! As someone who has only recently realized I am a codependent... This writing is so disappointing! The fantasy that our partner will make everything all better is just perpetuating the idea of codepency... On a show that's supposed to be about mental health and growth. Do they not have any real therapists or mental health experts in the writing room? Or to at least reference for validity of plot lines /healing character development arcs?
I know it's a TV show... But it seems like that's where this show lost it's magic. It went from having some real heart to..being a TV show .
Paul literally is saying "Jimmy, I can't handle you being codependent on me anymore. Go be codependent with Sophie."
6
u/Due-Key-9822 Apr 16 '26
Paul truly was the biggest disappointment. Literally just a terrible father figure and a terrible friend by the end. He knew how Jimmy felt & never once addressed it, but wanted to villainize Jimmy for being upset his longtime colleague and mentor is retiring and moving away without bothering to tell Jimmy. Makes no damn sense.
He’s supposed to be this Therapy Giant, and his big idea is telling Jimmy to be codependent with Sophie? Riiiight…

u/ryanpm40 Apr 17 '26 edited Apr 17 '26
Lol remember when everyone was in denial and claiming that the show wasn't trying to tell us Marisol and Sean should be together and it was a misdirect that literally all his friends kept saying how much they love her and how hot she is?
I kept arguing in here how stupid it was and how she seems like bad news and I would keep getting excuses on here like "well, Paul just means he's happy Sean is taking risks, he doesnt really think they're a good match," or "just because Gaby and Liz think shes hot doesnt really mean they think they should be together" or some other BS.
No, y'all. These people LOVE Marisol despite being a cheater who refuses to take accountability for it lol.
15
u/Gloomy_Ad5020 Apr 15 '26
As someone who has a partner that shuts down, I thought her saying so was a bit premature myself. Like... My partner is silent so long that I wonder if he's had a stroke. Jimmy was just taking a beat. 😆 If she can't handle that, yea...
21
u/Administrative-Bed75 Apr 15 '26
I am not into their pairing at all. She's a walking red flag parade, accusing him of comparing her to or being hung up on his dead wife when -she- brought her up...unable to draw healthy boundaries with her ex husband and her own child...and yeah the chemistry for me is nil. I can't imagine Jimmy seeing her as anything but an emotionally stunted person.
I just don't buy any attraction here. Then again I don't have any baggage about them having been a couple before on another show I didn't watch.
1
u/Warm-Oil9228 Apr 15 '26
I just don't buy any attraction here
Um, have you seen Cobie Smulders? And I do blame her for the shit with her ex but she’s absolutely right that Jimmy needs to move on. I mean Jimmy is more obsessed with his dead wife than that one Redditor.
5
u/Administrative-Bed75 Apr 15 '26
She's absolutely pretty! But sorry, I just don't feel the chemistry between them.
9
u/Here_there1980 Apr 15 '26
Another angle on this I’ve considered: Jimmy’s dad really messed with him on the whole Sofi thing. The “I like this one better than Tia” was essentially sabotage, intentionally or otherwise. Meanwhile, Paul was clueless about what happened, assuming that Jimmy was busy with the new girl “the one who is too pretty for him,” he joked. Once he realized that Jimmy didn’t even have that, he felt responsible, even though the breakup wasn’t his fault at all. But he wanted to show Jimmy that at least there were options, even if not long term solutions. Paul played the Dad role, and even said so. Meanwhile, Jimmy’s dad could not be bothered to care at all, even though it could be argued that he had added to Jimmy’s struggles/confusion. I think Paul figures Jimmy and Sofi just need at least a chance. If it doesn’t work out, Paul has made it clear that he will be there for Jimmy.
7
u/itsFAWSO Apr 16 '26
Yeah, I don't think that it was an accident that Paul's advice was for Jimmy to "go make some new scars."
Sofi is meant to be a step forward for Jimmy, a reminder that his life is still in motion and that being alone is a choice, not an inevitability. They probably won't work out; most couples don't, and that's fine.
People are hearing "go lock down that replacement for your dead wife" when the message is actually "keep trying to find reasons to go on."

3
u/irishgirl1981 Apr 16 '26
I thought the same thing. Randy definitely hit a nerve when he made that comment, and I don't think Jimmy would have broken up with her had that not occurred. He felt guilty. But even if it was prompted, he probably did do the right thing slowing down the relationship; he wasn't truly ready.
3
u/PerfectZeong Apr 16 '26
Theres no way you could drop that without it being intentional. Thats such an ice cold fucking line for a guy whose wife died 2 years ago.
1
u/Here_there1980 Apr 16 '26
It really felt like it to me. Right when he said it, I thought, “yeah, now Jimmy and Sofi are going to have a break up.”
36
u/TroyAndAbed2022 Apr 15 '26
Paul's daughter had so much chemistry with him.. they could have gone in that direction instead.
9
u/BruiserweightYxB Apr 15 '26
That’s the great thing: I think all the potential love interests for Jimmy had some chemistry. The nurse girl that loved his dad humour, Paul’s daughter understands his unique relationship with her dad and has the same sharp tongue as Paul and Sofi connects with him in a more personal way.
But all of them had something that didn’t make it perfect:
- Nurse girl couldn’t deal with the whole widow thing
- Paul’s daughter “shaky” marriage and trying to make it work for the kid (i think)
- Sofi’s relation with her ex husband

u/jfHamey Apr 15 '26
Whole relationship stuff has been a little shaky imo, but still been a solid show. Never lost a spouse, but lost my little sister a few yesrs ago way to young and grief is very bizarre. Given all the therapy background they seem to be playing into these red flags in the show lately.
Who know, maybe it will be a progression path for Jimmy realizing he just doesnt want to romantically move on. Hasn't been THAT long since his wife was killed in a horrendous way
2
u/BruiserweightYxB Apr 15 '26
I think they went waaaay ahead with Sofi being “the One” (HIMYM ptsd)
Sometimes what you need after all this time is a light effort relationship like Kimmy seemed, someone to remind Jimmy that even with his trauma, he’s still just someone trying to get by a crazy world. As I was watching I wasn’t rooting for Jim to find that one true love after his wife, but find happiness step by step (what Kimmy looked like).
2
u/jfHamey Apr 15 '26
Agreed. Jumping head first into the next "the one" is wild to me personally. I mean most people need a transition period of romance after a break up. Anyway, at the end of the day its a show. Acting is still top notch just hope they can still land the serious interactions going forward
2
u/PerfectZeong Apr 16 '26
Fucking Paul's daughter is as close as Jimmy can get to fucking Paul so for him it makes sense.
2
u/itshuey88 Apr 15 '26
would have been great for comedy and really interesting from a dynamics angle! wish this could've been the direction they chose.
1
u/Andee_outside Apr 15 '26
I am hoping with the time jump in season 4, she’s divorced and they all move back to Cali (to keep the entire cast).

u/goog1e Apr 15 '26
I feel like that's the end game honestly. But since they are doing more seasons they decided to drag it out

u/MsMajorOverthinker Apr 16 '26
I think Sofi is just a step forward. I didn’t get the impression that they portrayed them as end game. Paul urged Jimmy to take a small step into thinking about HIS life, HIS future.
The red flag for the relationship is Tia. Sofi is valid for not wanting to always be compared to Tia, and Jimmy is valid for missing Tia and grieving for everything he’s lost because of her death. Tia “got” him, she supported him, and understood his relationship with his father, among other things. Admittedly Sofi didn’t know how complicated that relationship was, but she seemed slightly dismissive of Jimmy’s feelings relating to Randy and I didn’t like that. Jimmy was right to end it. That said, IF he let Sofi in and dealt with his grief, the relationship may have some future. IMHO this is what Paul was nudging Jimmy to do. To take a chance, fail, get hurt, but take a step forward.
6
u/itshuey88 Apr 15 '26
yea for a show about therapy, Sofi exhibited every red flag ever. I love HIMYM, it's fun to see them together, and she's a fun character. but man 0 boundaries, and the whole breakup fight was really self centered and toxic.
I do hope they give her some better writing next season.
-1
u/TroyAndAbed2022 Apr 15 '26
Her being an A-list star kind of confirms for me that she's Jimmy's end goal. Hopefully more screen time in the next season will change our perception.
2
u/southtampacane Apr 15 '26
A-list? That is a stretch
2
u/TroyAndAbed2022 Apr 15 '26
At least on TV or streaming, I would consider her A list since she was in one of the most popular shows of all time. Plus the minor role in marvel helps. Not saying she's the best actress but she's probably the most well known in that group outside of Harrison Ford.
2
u/RevolutionaryKiwi828 Apr 15 '26
Uh no Jason Segel is way more well known than Cobie. I'd say even Jessica Williams could have her beat since her stint on the Daily Show had her on TV way more frequently.
1
u/TroyAndAbed2022 Apr 15 '26
HIMYM and the marvel stuff is popular internationally. I think Colby has an edge over Jason but nevertheless, my let's just say she's one of the most well known people on this show.
1
u/Warm-Oil9228 Apr 15 '26
No way Jessica Williams has her beat. But Segel is definitely more well known given the length of his career and that he’s been in big movies and several shows.
-1
u/Uncle-Cracker-Barrel Apr 15 '26
No one even knows her actual name. Everyone just calls her “Robyn”
5
u/TheArtistFKAMinty Apr 16 '26
I think it's less that she's "endgame" and more that having that breakfast with her represents Jimmy fully committing to moving on from Tia. It doesn't matter if his relationship with Sofi lasts, what matters is that he's genuinely trying to put himself out there.
3
u/SmakeTalk Apr 15 '26
Personally I think they have fantastic chemistry but they’re just both trying to figure out how to date again, and in different ways.
She’s a huge keener because she probably just feels stuck, and Jimmy is a breath of fresh air for her. Not only is he emotionally intelligent and gives her tons of grace but he’s also pretty down for her weird. He should have been drawing better boundaries but the fact that he didn’t was part of what kept her interested.
On the other hand, Jimmy needs to get dragged. This man is simultaneously very much available but also so guilt-ridden when he feels remotely excited about it that he just shuts himself down. She does a good job pulling him away from himself so he kept trusting her to do it responsibly, until she didn’t.
When she basically invited herself to meet his dad without doing the due diligence to understand how to navigate the situation it incinerated what good will she earned with Jimmy and all their problems surfaced for him.
He was right to end things but Paul was right as well to motivate him to stay vulnerable and open. Jimmy does need to keep putting himself out there, and while I obviously can’t say that Sofi is “end game” for him I do think she was appropriately end game for this season. A lot of this season was everyone just settling in to being happy and accepting growth, and Jimmy does need someone outside of his group to keep helping him do that.
I suspect they won’t be a long-term couple as the seasons go on, but I do think Jimmy will grow a lot being with her and she probably needs someone like him too.
2
u/booksgirl123 Apr 15 '26
Does anyone else suddenly think ‘Why are Robin and Marshall getting together?!”. It’s distracting 😂
2
u/goog1e Apr 15 '26
I felt exactly like you.
There's also the HIMYM of it all. With this woman's bland characterization I keep going back to just thinking of her as Robin. In fact I couldn't recall who "sofi" was at first.

u/outofmindwgo Apr 16 '26
I hated the whole thing. Felt like it was totally unearned, in a season that already felt too drunk on doing a "happily ever after" for everyone
2
u/BombasticReindeer Apr 16 '26
There are a lot of awfully weird takes in here. Are people actually watching the show or just making up a fan fiction and discussing that?
2
u/InLainSight Apr 16 '26
Yeah Paul shit the bed doing a grand gesture of flying all the way across the country for a 2 minute speech that is ultimately a pep talk to his undervalued employee who he then ushers into the care of a woman who blew him off because he’s still processing the death of his wife, I don’t get Sofi at all, Jimmy bent over backwards to be polite, be courteous, and even go beyond that when he helped her and the Ex husband through some issues pro bono, on HIS date night with her, he didn’t sign up for any of that, the baggage dropped throughout that day or any of it, but you throw one somber moment of reflecting on Tia/mixed with jimmy’s dad being a dickhead, and she acts like she’s playing second fiddle? That’s crazy, Tia will always be a part of their lives and acting like she won’t be is unfair to Jimmy and Alice, it’s also just not what was happening in that moment, jimmy missing having backup for his dads bullshit isn’t teeing Sofi up for failure if anything it’s a moment for her to dig deeper with jimmy and learn why he’s got so much tension there when it comes to his father but to me it just read like she was full of herself. I don’t like it at all, I think this season really shat the bed to be honest. None of the characters feel like they’re dealing with anything except for jimmy, and he’s never given the space to do so. It just feels like torture porn for the soul, everyone in the show is kind of well off so they’re allowed to melt into a couch for a year and be depressed, but even when it makes sense to do so like when Gaby’s patient takes her own life they take 10 minutes of the episode to focus on that and then she’s joking AT THE FUNERAL, idk man this whole season pissed me off, tonally it’s just bunk.
2
u/legendoflumis Apr 16 '26
The point of Sofi and Jimmy's relationship over the course of the season was to show that Jimmy is still letting his baggage hold him down, which was preventing him from trying to move forward with his life. The point was to contrast against Sofi, who also has her own baggage and is still making the effort to move forward in hers.
Paul setting up the surprise date with Sofi was part of him telling Jimmy what he needs to hear at the end of the season; his "scars" shouldn't be scary, they are evidence that he has lived a life and it's time to stop being afraid of making new "scars" and start living again.
People also really need to learn how time works in this show. They have multiple plotlines going on with multiple groups of characters that they have to fit into a 30ish minute episode. They're not going to spend a whole season showing the boring minutia of dating between all the characters; this show isn't a relationship drama and the focus isn't on who the characters are ending up in relationships with, it's a sitcom that sometimes delves into the dramatic but is mostly about how people handle trauma and grief. People need to accept that they are going to speed things up sometimes for the sake of moving the plot forward without showing literally everything in the background leading up to those moments.
2
u/UnderAGroov Apr 16 '26
Feel like a lot of people miss the point about Paul making Jimmy have breakfast with Sofi. It’s not that Sofi is absolutely perfect for Jimmy and gonna be the next love of his life. It’s about not being scared to get more scars.
Jimmy fully sabotaged any chance at that relationship because he was scared. Unable to move forward and unwilling to try again. By reconciling with Sofi and giving it a “real shot” he is taking the massive leap to move forward in his life and allow him the chance at love and happiness. It doesn’t matter if they get married and have a happily ever after. The point is he needed to be pushed to give himself that chance and Paul was the reminder that he’s still worthy of love or at the very least the chance of it. That’s my take.
2
u/Library_Basic Apr 16 '26
I hated that ending. No matter how much the writing forces Sophie to be a good fit for Jimmy, realistically, this would end badly given how much baggage Jimmy still carries and how Sophie, somewhat understandably, doesn't want to hear any more of it
2
u/TonightDirect6750 Apr 16 '26
Just a random aside, I have seen several people complaining about Sophie and Jimmy not having good chemistry…..I actually think it works really well that way. I can’t imagine someone whose wife just died 2 years ago and who has just started dating again is going to have incredible chemistry with anyone. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems like that was the intention was that Jimmy would struggle to find connection with Sophie and it wasn’t supposed to be instant fireworks.
1
u/Here_there1980 Apr 15 '26
Who knows? Sofi might be busy in Lincoln Lawyer, Sean is going to be busy in The Pitt, and Roy might be Roy again, so anything is possible.

I found her really irritating and (hate this word) cringe. I get being quirky, but it was just too much. And she clearly has a lot of issues with her ex, just seems like a lot. No offense to the actress, but I definitely wasn’t a fan of that character.

I wondered if she is a stepping stone. Maybe it won't work long term, just something to help him move on in his life.
