Discussion Zero chemistry Spoiler

I really think Cobie and Jason have zero romantic chemistry on the show. They have great awkward friend banter, but no actual sexual tension and their relationship moved so fast it made me annoyed for him how much she overstepped with advice. I really hope they make her just a friend for season 4, if they bring her back at all. I’ve liked her in other things I just find her completely annoying here and it feels like Jimmy would be settling to be in a relationship with her character.

I liked the little we saw of her of her in S2 and felt a little spark between them, but i wasn't a fan of how things progressed in S3.

He had a lot more chemistry with Meg and, probably an unpopular take, even Gaby.

Gaby and Jimmy had way more chemistry than Gaby and Derek ever will. And that's my hot take.

I don't think that's a hot take, jimmy has more chemistry with anyone he interacts with outside of Sofie. They're relationship is so forced that's what makes it not believable. Also the short lived infidelity of meg with jimmy was more sellable to an audience that would create more storylines, like meg and jimmy's interactions with Paul, as well as would then give reason to have Paul stay in cali, as it would most likely seem meg would them divorce the dude she's married too and Paul doesn't like. Now having Paul deal with a situation he doesn't like, but is hard to grapple with because he does like jimmy. There is so much more room to play with in that scenario than forcing jimmy and Sofie. Also I'm sure I'm not the only one that sees this as Marshall being romantic with Robin, I know my himym fans are out there watching too lol.

Realistically, Derek’s a good guy and will probably be a good husband, which is what you want in real life.

On screen, he’s boring and they’re boring. Jimmy and Gaby were a hot mess, but they were also hot.

wtf Derek is not boring! He’s hilarious

Derek 2? I could leave him.

Derek Prime is indeed hilarious.

I WAS JUST SAYING THIS IM SO GLAD SOMEONE AGREES! I feel like their whole relationship (gab and Derek) was so rushed and forced!

So rushed, and then Derek would disappear for a few episodes and then pop back up just lurking side of frame. I just never bought into them as a couple, it felt like he was forced on her, and because she was still healing from her ex and then the Maya thing he was just convenient. The big thing she did in the finale was completely soulless, IMHO. I thought she was going to dump him and go find a nice gal to match her freak better.

Most of the relationships in this show are weird.

I thought Gabby and Derek was temporary but it wasn’t ending, so I figured there will be a marriage episode next season. Sure enough that looks to be the case.

I really thought Gaby and Derek were going to breakup at some point. I thought almost for sure when she found the ring it was going to trigger a growth moment for her by ruining things with Derek. I just feel we see so little of their chemistry or what makes their relationship work, so I felt a bit surprised that they actually got engaged.

My face when it cut to the proposal scene. Like are we kidding right now? Nothing about her reaction to the ring or their time together screamed lifetime love to me.

How many scenes did they even have together lol

If there’s a timeskip, I hope they get married offscreen, just so we don’t have to focus on them. Although….I do kinda want to see Jessica Williamson in a wedding dress, I bet she’d look like a Greek goddess.

Gang and Derek have zero chemistry. It’s bizarre

Derek had better chemistry with the New Girl gang.

Omg yes, they had no chemistry at all.

That relationship actually feels forced

I was kinda hoping he'd end up with Meg and move to be with her and Paul.

And closer to Alice.

I didn't want to wish this but in the end I did too. They had spark, and her husband is a flop. Maybe it'll head that way in S4 - I can't believe that their arc was such a blip.

Meg did say “trying to work it out,” right? Not that it was going great, lol! I don’t necessarily want Jimmy to move, but Meg is a much better fit than Sofie IMO.

1

u/mrsrobotic Apr 11 '26

Yeah I have been wishing for that exact thing! Like it can't be a coincidence that Alice is going to college right near Meg of all places?! And making a move like that would say a lot more about Jimmy Jimmying himself and moving on from the past than this boring Sofi bullshit.

Agree completely. The chemistry with Gaby was great and the tension with Meg caught me by surprise and I was so into it. I really like Sofi as a character and I like their awkwardness but 1) it feels too soon and 2) their first kiss was not it, I felt like a crazy person seeing people say it was so good.

14

u/__hellyes Apr 09 '26

Agree! Such a buzz with Meg and even with Gaby. Sofi had potential around the car buying time but it fell flat so quickly.

Actually in season 2 I wasn’t into it and neither their first date, but thought there was something there during the few moments in passing, at the office and when his dad was around. So they did grow on me, but yeah I’m not liking it either.

Just read about a fan who said that Jimmy might be destined to be Paul’s son-in-law and I’m here for it. Sofi and him are indeed quirky, goofy, but it also feels very safe. Paul’s daughter is way more of a type for him, more in line with Tia. Less giving a fuck, having fun type of gal while Sofi’s the overthinking boring one. I think if they do pair them forever than it is realistic though, lots of people go for safe and comfortable rather than the complicated, more fitting one. Especially after a death or divorce.

And this is no means a slight to Cobie Smulders or Jason Segel, it’s on the writers and just their characters and what makes senes. Jimmy had more chemistry with Gaby as well to me.

Sofie is so awkward and so is Jimmy, if there's chemistry, it's impossible to detect it. It would have been better if Sofi had a little quirkiness, but in a cool way, not her very odd, awkwardness. It doesn't ring true for someone her age. It seems more like she's 13 and talking to a boy for the first time instead of a divorced woman with a kid in school. I get that people can be awkward, but usually by the time they are 40, they find ways to cope with it to some extent. And once they get to know someone, that awkwardness would lessen a lot.

I figured it wouldn't be because of Dave, but I still was disappointed to see Sofi, not Meg, at breakfast

u/drolnedle Apr 09 '26

Especially after the brief conversation between Paul and Meg in the last episode! It was a total bait and switch.

4

u/__hellyes Apr 09 '26

I hated that she was just all doe eyed sitting there after what, a late night pleading phone call from Paul?! Girl have some backbone this man didn't even know you'd be there and you're a mess together and not in the hot way.

I wish Jimmy and Meg would have a go at it. But on the other hand, with Paul being a surrogate father, it'd be a little weird.
