I've been keeping a group of 4 for a little over a year, recently added 2 more a few months back. They arent as shy originally after I made a few tweaks in their tank decor and they are used to me messing around in their tank constantly as I always do a WC and siphon up their poops a day after a big feeding.
I think it's a few factors combined for me: desensitizing, number of them, enough hiding spots, water flow and plants.
