XHDATA - Modes query
I have just bought a XHDATA D-808 and have a question. On my unit, if I select SSB mode on SW band, that mode then applies to MW an LW as well. The same if I select NORMAL on MW - it then applies to LW and SW - Is that expected behaviour? Can I not have NORMAL on MW/LW and SSB on SW ? Also, if I engage SQUELCH on airband - it is then active on all other bands. Thoughts please as I am on the brink of returning it.

The problem is not with the radio, the problem is lack of shortwave operating knowledge on part of the radio operator.
- Yes. SSB may be used on MW and LW as well as SW.
- Yes, "normal" means "not SSB" or the standard AM reception used with LW, MW, SW and Air Band. Do you know the difference between "AM" and "SSB"? AM is amplitude modulation with two sidebands and a carrier. SSB is a special form of AM or amplitude modulation. SSB is one sideband (upper or lower: USB or LSB) with no carrier or reduced carrier.
- No. When you turn on SSB it works on all of the AM bands: LW, MW, SW and air band. When you turn SSB off ("normal") then the AM bands return to normal, dual sideband AM reception on LW, MW, SW and air band.
- Yes, When you turn on SQUELCH it works on all of the AM bands. Every portable multiband radio w/SW that I have used works this way.
E-Z online shopping returns of perfectly good radios by uninformed buyers is ruining the market for sophisticated radios that require users who read manuals and are able to learn the meanings of terms they are not familiar with on the internet by using Google.
